Hull Thickness

I have been thinking that as a community to help explain certain features of starships we should provide certain criteria as to explain some of the RPG statistics.

My first thoughts are on Hull Thickness. How many pixels should equal 1D or 30 Hull points of the RPG Statistics?

Will Exterior wall thickness be made of different material than internal wall thickness?

When I first thought of this, was about two years ago. I broached the subject with an Alliance member at the time and he thought it was a neat idea but it never went further than that. The initial thought was 1 inch = +1 or 10 Hull Points. So every Pixel would be +2 or 20 Hull. Thus if you had a 2D Hull it would equate to 6 inches or 3 pixels.

Should we have different measurements for Civilian and Military craft. Would Old Republic (TotJ or KotoR) be different?

And obviously the Sun Crusher and it's technology would be quite different.

Re: Hull Thickness

I think it can't be done and it would hardly be of any use. Most of all, because the majority of rpg stats (both D6 and D20) does not even appropriatly represent the ships they are supposed to describe.

The stats are no first line source and there is the problem. They are not even second line.

Since official pictures are far more important, they should be the basis to determine hull thickness. The incredible cross-sections books are good sources for that.

The actual thickness of the hull is also much less important, than the hull density. You can build a fighter with a cardboard thin hull, as strong as thick steel plating.

Eventually we will end up with an outer hull thickness between 4 and 6 pixels anyway, including the black in- and outlines.

A more direct influence on hull thickness is the hull layers, because multiple hulls inside each other increase the eventual total thickness more than armor stats. Looking at most ships in the cross-sections books, you can see that most ships use a lot of space beween outer hull surface and inner hull walls for multiple hulls, cables and wiring.

Re: Hull Thickness

My advice would be to eyeball it. If you've got a solidly built ship, or one that is listed as having armor plating, you might want to make the hull a little thicker; a lightweight, sportier ship will have a thinner hull.
