Re: Lambda Shuttle
Lookin' great. As far as coloring it goes, that shouldn't be too hard, as long as you don't use Lucas's crazy shading thing.

Re: Lambda Shuttle
Indeed we will impliment my "crazy shading" technique to this ship, if I have anything to say about it....especially if Lars would agree to let us post it in the Gallery.

Re: Lambda Shuttle
The next level:
starwars.com had announced the Complete Cross-Sections.
Link
With brand new illustrations, including the Imperial Shuttle.
Now I am in trouble. To make high accurate deckplan I need a look into the book, to analyze the shuttle.
But, the book will be published in April 2007.
By the way: I think it's a great book.

Re: Lambda Shuttle
I wouldn't worry too much about the official cross-sections right now. They have not been extremely accurate to the movies (our primary source) in the past, and you can still do the ****pit from the movie footage alone.

Re: Lambda Shuttle
Lars can and in fact should keep it up and do the ship from the movie footage. If Lars wants, he can make modifications later, but they will affect internal aspects much more than external aspects.
The Cross-Sections are far from inaccurate to the movies, mostly because the majority of the cross-sections material was produced along the movies and it even had huge retroactive impact on them. The Slave 1 from the classic trilogy cross sections book for example, was the major influence on details for the Episode 2 Slave 1.
Also keep in mind that every picture of a ship, be it external orthos or internal deckplan layout, is ALWAYS and interpretation of the individual artist in question. It only matters little wether or not this artist is working for an official source, because neither do the official sources have any kind of rock solid quality control, nor do they weed out artists with an error margin above 10%. Only the movies and the movies alone show 100% Star Wars. Every other visualisation is always an interpretation and it can never be expected to "really" look 100% identical. Put 100 artists on a hill and tell them to draw a mountain and you will get 100 different pictures that in spite of each beeing different, should all show the same mountain.

Re: Lambda Shuttle
Perhaps I should rephrase that: the cross-sections have been of less use to us than you'd think because there have often been problems with errors in the third dimension, inaccuracies relative to the movie sets (which have occasionally been inaccurate to each other) and untenable engineering solutions.

Re: Lambda Shuttle
......the book is just a compilation of all the cross-section books they released previously....with a few new illustrations tossed in...I don't suspect a great epiphany being reached...by acquiring this book....
...best-case scenario...the new illustrations are done competently...but since they're likely made by people who pored over what reference material that could be quickly acquired....I doubt it would be better than the attempts of any "fan" from the Design Alliance...

First color picture...
Please leave comments! Is the shading correct?

Re: Lambda Shuttle
Awesome work, Lars!
And feedback you shall have.
The shading is very good. Almost perfect. I illustrated some things that you did "wrong". Use the full range of shades on all roundings, whenever possible. 180° of a circle need all the shade from light to dark, in approximatly exponential steps.
Another thing are black line crossings. When one black line meets another, there is an intersection. When one of the lines is further away than the other, the last point of the line in the background is painted in either the darkest hull shading color used, or in the specific intersection colors attached to each color group in the new shading system.
You can see an example of this below and you can also see an example of how it works in the example file for the new shading system.
If needed, I can give more detailed explanation in the Chat in German.
Another option for the shading, which is much more complicated, is shading the panel lines all one level darker, than the adjacent hull shade. That looks even more realistic, but it is also much more work intensive and it makes modifications and color changes harder for some people. I prefer the "simple" complex shading, Lucas prefers the "complex" complex shading. The choice is yours.
