Imperator-Class

First of all: Hello everybody and thank you for inviting me into the Core! To be honest, it cought me completely by surprise and I didn't really expect it so soon. I am flattered. emoticon

Now on to the topic.

I am planning to do deckplans of an Imperator Stardestroyer. Call me insane and megalomaniac, but thats not the case and I am neither. Of course I know perfectly well, that something like that is virtually impossible and that is why I don't plan to make a deckplan in the literal sense.

I have already discussed part of this concept with Lucas in the irc chat, so he can probably guess where this is supposed to be going.

The thing is, that the Star Destroyers of the Empire are, according to many sources, modular to a very far degree. Many parts are pre-fabricated and no two Imperators are really the same.

Of course we can't make a real deckplan of an Imperator, but the total lack of ANY deckplans for these ships is crippling to roleplaying campaigns including them, no matter if it is a campaign in the service of the empire, an espionage campaign, boarding, or just getting captured by the imps.

Therefor, what I am proposing, is making some of the modules that make up an Imperators internal structure. Mess-blocks, quarter-blocks, barracks-blocks, holding cells and so on.

It would also be possible to make a deckplan of the main hangar and the main bridge. Sure, the hangar of these ships is huge, but it is relatively simple, since most of it is just a giant empty hall.

Such modules would not help players to orient themselves on the ship as a whole, but it would help them to orient themselves in parts of it.

I know that even with all these limitations it is a very ambitious project, but I am convinced it could be done. Especially since multiple people could contribute to it, once the guidelines are laid out.

The only real drawback would be, that we don't really know anything about how the guts of an ISD really look like. We know the bridge and we know the hangar and thats pretty much it. On the other hand, that is no difference to most of the ships we make and in fact we have more about the Imperator-Class, Imperial architecture and Imperial interior design in general than we have about many other ships.

What do you think?

To be honest, and I think that Frank will agree with me on this one, we need to concentrate on the current projects before we tackle something of this magnitude...at least for now. There are hundreds of ships that are needed before we start taking on things that are the size of a small city. considering that the ISD is what...about 100 decks and 1.6 kilometres long...the internal volume of that ship is gigantic on a level I don't think people truly realize. I spent YEARS analyzing it's shape and structure, and this would take all of us years to complete. We would be able to complete hundreds of ships before we could effectively complete one deck of this thing....and that would be the bridge deck.

Ultimately Void, I have to reel you in on this one. lets build the more accessible stuff first and then work on the crazy stuff later. emoticon

As I said, there are hundreds of projects that need desperate attention.

For example, I have footage of the Action 6 from XWA that is different from the one on the main site that is interesting.

We have the fighters, speeder bikes, equipment lists, not to mention all the freighters...it's like the Galaxy was colonized by SUV in SW.

anyway, hold this thoiught, I implore you. We will get to it eventually.

Even a Venator class is out of our reach for the moment.

regards,
Lucas

As I said, I have no intention of making complete deckplans for such a behemoth. However, I have no problem with delay on this one. The question is not if I'll do it. It's more a "when" and "how" thing. emoticon

If someone stumbles across interesting reference material on internal systems of the Imperator, feel free to dump them here. Its never wrong to collect in advance and be prepared once you decide to get started. emoticon

I have no problem with that at all. Thank you Void. for a second there, I thought you might want to start a full mock up.

bear in mind that at bluescale the centreline of the ISD is an image length of 31,679 pixels.

Although...that does bring up an interesting method to develop it. The central decks would require a minimum of 10 seperate pages per section at about 3000 pixels wide (coincidentally the approximate length of the CR-90) what we can do is at some point on each page, a locator map with a small ortho of the ISD for location reference....or better yet, a java applet with locator sections on them, the entire length of the ship is separated by 10 sections length wise, then when the section page loads, it shows a cutaway of that section with further subdicisions where you can select specific locations within that section. It would be a huge project, but it would look absolutely incredible.

Alright Void, stop giving me ideas like this. emoticon

regards,
Lucas

Void I would rather see you tackle a far bigger problem and a far bigger project.

We need a galactic map. All the ships in the galaxy are useless without a map to navigate by. I have prepared an attack plan to build the map, but I need help. Void you agree with me about the prequels, and I suspect you will agree we need a map of the original STAR WARS worlds. The worlds defined by West End Games.

I suggest you forget the ISD. you can use the deckplans in the "Death Star Technical manual" in an ISD. Most internal modules are the same and are small enough to use on a ISD as well as the death star. We have bigger fish to catch Void, and we voted you in to "The Core" to catch them.

Re: Imperator-Class

My concept is, since an ISD is already a modular design, built from prefabricated subsystems, then it could be done in building blocks. Few blocks will be bigger than our average ship. A barracks block for example would be the barracks layout for one platoon of stormtroopers.

The clue would be to standardise the positions of doorways and to rasterize the size of the modules into 4-10 different sizes.

Making those blocks, once we have established the guidelines, is easy and when they are done, they can in turn be combined flexibly to create representive cut-outs of certain areas, none much bigger than our average freighter. Even the bridge is not that big, since there would be no need to do the whole command tower. Even less than 5% of the bridge deck would completely suffice.

Combining building blocks like that with small locator orthos would tie the knots to a net, allowing an Imperator Star Destroyer to be used much better by gamers, without the necessity to show more than 1% of the ship, even if everything is added together.

The most important part however would be the hangar, since that is the heart of the ship.

This IS of course a long term project, but I think it is one, that can be run parallel to other developments. Since most of it would be interior design and recombination of building blocks, work on it can be done as filler between other projects and parts of them.

Void I agree the ISD plan will work, but if you poll the members, you will find they want more freighters, and smaller ships. I am quite sure a solid galactic map will be more popular than an ISD in any poll on this site as well. It is a lot of work for something that will have negligable benefit to the community at large. Void lets make a difference, and lets make it count.

Think about it.

Indeed. but a galactic map...wow...that is going to be one hell of a thing to make....also, in ANH Luke states that "if there is a bright centre to the universe, you are on the planet that it's farthest from". A clumsy sentence, but then why do ALL the galactic maps not indicate Tatooine as an actual outer rim world, there are always, it seems, systems that are further away from the Core - what is the deal with that?
