the falcon has no apparent lifts. it has a central circular "tunnel", but that fits with the design of the central circular shape of the ship.

The Death Star is also circular. There is no photographic evidence that an ISD or other large warship has circular lifts.

Oh, so Lando used a small trampoline to gather a wounded Luke off the hull? I could have sworn that was a lift. I mean it was going up, as in "to lift", but maybe I'm wrong. I defer to your superior observations in this matter.

And forgive me if I'm wrong on this account. But I do recall Luke, Han, and a cuffed Chewie getting to the detention center via a round turbolift. I mean all those turbolift shafts were totally tubular dude.

C'mon Luc, stop making me embarass you over such trivia.

the hatch was circular. we do not actually see the lift itself, or the internal section of the ship to determine that the lift is actually in a tube. You are making an unsupported assumption.

I don't recall a detention centre in the milennium falcon...perhaps I was watching a different film.

and how are you accomplishing that exactly?

You force a lot of square pegs into round holes don't you?

Detention center? Where was the detention center in the film? The Death Star.

Now stop being silly, you're proving your IQ.

The Falcon did not have a real "lift". It had a lifting platform in conjection with an airlock. However, I think it is safe to assume that this platform was indeed round.

The lifts in the Death Star were definately round.

I also checked "Star Wars Complete Locations":

Round lifting plattforms in the Theed Hangar.
Round turbolifts in the senate building.
Round lifts next to rounded lifts in the Ourlander Club.
Round mass troop elevator in the Tipoca City military complex.
Round turbolifts in Palpatines Office.
Rectangular freight elevator in Pau City.
Rectangular ship elevator on Polis Mesa.
Round turbolifts in the Sith Medcenter.
Rectangular lifting platforms in the Death Star hangars.
Round turbolifts in the Great Temple on Yavin IV.
Round turbolifts in Echo Base.
Round turbolifts in Bespin's Processing Vane.
Rectangular lift in Jabba's Palace.
Round turbolifts in Endor landing platform.
Round turbolifts in the Emperors command spire.
Round turbolifts in the Executor's command tower.

"Star Wars Complete Locations" is no direct movie reference, but nonetheless it is canonical.

I think it can safely be assumed, that most personal lifts in Star Wars are indeed round, while only mass lifts, ship lifts, cargo lifts and primitive lifts tend to be rectangular. The design aesthetics of Star Wars clearly point to rounded shapes inside most buildings. There will be other shapes of lifts, but in all visual sources, they are the minority.

Therefor I think Frank's use of round personal lifts and rectangular cargo lifts is very reasonable.

This may have something to do with the functional concept of turbolifts themselves. A rectangular box can only go up and down without problems, while lift shafts for tubular cabins can slope and bend slightly better to rerout the cabin and the cabin itself can rotate inside the shaft to face different access directions without the need for multiple doors in the cabin.

that does seem reasonable to assume, Void.

Bear in mind that those references do appear to be the OT, and there are examples of square lifts in the prequels.

It might be worth noting that the design influences we see in the OT are not the same as in the prequesls....but this could have been due to the influence that was excercized by Palpatine...many emperors even in our history have had tremendous influence in design and theme. Mussolini and Hitler are clear examples of this.

but also on a serious note, pscargile and lucas please stop this before the inflamitory remarks get out of hand. Im beggin in the name of the forums.
