...oh...I just came upon a screen-capture taken from the short-lived television series Firefly...in the background...is a Mobquet Transport...and an interesting view of its landing gear...have a look-see...

I couldn't help but shiver, because such things can kill a series, if a bunch of lawsuits gets crazy about it. But unless that happens, it is a funny easteregg, even if I think the modellers were just lazy and pirated a model from some websource. Otherwise it is heavily inspired by... emoticon

Back to the panels: Stabilizers make in fact a lot of sense. Any kind of lift system works better, more reliable and more stable, if it has more leverage and more area of effect. Thus putting repulsors in wings allows more much more stability. Putting shield systems into them will also create a better aerodynamic shield bubble, increasing lift and providing more drag for deceleration.
