Also it's so innocuous , you can imagine squadrons and fleets of these ships plying the spaceways.

In the TIE Fighter game, the first mission has 5 of these come in as a group with one smuggling Rebels.

I believe that the top is the front.

...I know the X-wing:Alliance Upgrade peeps did a remodel of this ship...which was pretty spiffy....as I recall...it looked like they partitioned the cargo pontoons in the middle of each....as well as gave it some more surface detail....

...on a side-note...I used one of these ships in an RPG...as a mobile hanger on one side....leaving the other cargo pod for...well...cargo....even did some preliminary sketches of it....but they sucked...too bad stuff just can't pop out of my head...like a Polaroid...

Is this upgrade official or fannon?

the XWA upgrade is 'fannon' as you put it, but may serve as inspiration for detailing, but I would not stray too far from the source.

I think it is correct that the Bulk freighter is actually carrying 4 containers and the middle grey area is just fill that they could not reconcile due to limited polycount within the game.

I think the most flexibility could be achieved by having the frieghter itself be the center section, with a variety of standard cargo containers that can be attached to it, including the double containers we see in the games.

yes, I think that makes the most sense.

looking at the size of this ship though and the configuration with the 'standard' cargo containers attached, I am unconvinced this ship could land on a planet without sustaining heavy damage. The landing gear (if it has any) would be WAY too short, or be far too spindly to really assist in landing ops when loaded with external cargo cannisters.

This ship would most likely land without those containers though.

I'd say it never landed at all. Its purely for hauling cargo through space. There would be other 'barges' to get the containers to and from plant surfaces.

I agree with Quint, this ship with 200,000 metric tons is not landing. It will get it's cargo from a depot/docking facility in space.
