Frank, I agree entirely, I would suggest following the textures used on the mesh, as that is what determines it's shape. as Frank mentioned, the boxiness of the game mesh is for rendering speed within the game and the textures are there to cheat the eye into thinking there is more dfetail than there really is...a good example of this is the Otana.

Lucas

Simple example for all those who don't know how lowpoly and highpoly work and how they must be interpreted.

Image

All three objects are effectively the same. The left is how the object really looks like. The middle show how it would look in a low resolution game and the right is the geometry of the one in the middle. The barrel of that gun is just a painted black circle and the bevelin at the edges is just two thin circles. However, it represents the object on the left.

For comparisson: The original model has 1680 rectangular polygones. Thats 1680 faces in the mesh. The lowpoly version is only 36 triangular polys.

So if you look at the version in the middle, the game really wants you to see the object on the left and not that on the right.

Hope it helps some to understand that better.

Over this coming well I'm going to try and complete Ortho's of both the bridge and an updated version of the engine. Which, on that note, I just wanted to ask if there were any design elements people would like to see kept from either of the two versions I've posted ehre. Just for my own reference.

Don't do anything internal as long as you don't have a complete external map of the ship. External appearance is the source we have, so it is the frame for all work we do. Chances are that most internal concepts are null and void, with just minor changes to external appearance.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that we have to use a low resolution model as reference and that means that this ship could (and will) very well have LOTS of details, that are not visible at first glance in the game skins.

External shape first, then detail, then internal layout, then external readjustments, then internal readjustment, internal detail, external detail adjustment and final internal.

I don't think you want to do parts of all that work more than once without benefit. You are doing well so far, but keep track of the priorities. emoticon

Alright, as promised here's an update, albiet a day late and a dollar short. The bridge is unfinished as you can see, but I wanted to get everyone's opinions on how it is progressing. The engine, however, looks alot better. I smoothed it out some, and detailed it. Again I'd like to get opinions.

Could you please post the complete b&w orthos that you are working from? Or are you making the ship piece by piece?

I making it piece by piece based on the images Lucas posted earlier in this thread. It makes it easier for me by allowing me to focus on a single piece of the ship.

Alright. Since Frank is no longer a major part of this forum I'm going to pose this question again so that I know what I should be focusing on when designing this ship. Should I continue to make the low-rez 3D images from XWA my primary source material, or am I allowed to draw inspiration from the hi-rez 3D model and the other images I found?
