posticon The wild and wonderful world of Microsoft Paint

Here ye Here ye, my brethren of deckplans. I plan to use this thread to post any cool tricks, and short cuts I discovered since I started using Microsoft Paint to draw deckplans back in 1997. You may know some of these, and may not. Either way here we go.

posticon A Third Color Where None Was Before

Ever wish you could select a third color from the color palete instead of just two?

Well you can, refer to the image below.

Image

If you hold down the Ctrl Key while selecting a color, you will see the selection box change color. This is your third color selection. To draw with this third color, just hold down the Ctrl Key and draw with either the right or left mouse button. To go back to your primary color selections, just release the Ctrl Key, and draw with either the left or right mouse buttons, as you normaly would.

With practice, this third color selector, can improve productivity by 50%. Have fun.

Sweet tip about the third color Frank. Now I have a qusetion for you. How do you get the exact colors for the deckplan color chart? I always have problems with the light green that is used for equipment and systems. I also need to know how you get the orange colors for the padding and stuff. I always have to cut and paste lots of small sections of one particular color and put them together to get a large section of whatever color I am needing. It is a real pain in the butt and takes time. Please help! emoticon

That is a great Tip Frank, I didn't know about that one. emoticon

Murrdohk,

Are you referring to the RGB values?
If so, generally the colour shades at least in my case, are developed as a 24 bit bmp as you have more freedom to create specific colours and shades. The problem is that when you save it as a Gif in paint, the program interlaces an approximation of the shade and so you are left with a real mess for detailing.

I solve this by converting from bmp to gif using photoshop.

As far as using pre existing colours from Frank and other's drawings, clip and paste is the only real solution.

Most of the time I open 2 or even 3 paint windows so I can clip and paste more easily and faster.

I'm not sure if I answered your question Murrdohk, but I hope that helps anyway...

regards,
Lucas

posticon Don't save as GIF in MS Paint!

Luc is right Murrdohk. Listen to him.

I work on my ships and save them as 24bit BMP format on my hard drive. When I am ready to post them on the website, I import the BMP files to Paint Shop Pro (this is why I say I do 95% of my work in MS Paint). Paint Shop Pro or any "top-end" drawing program can easily convert the image to 256 colors with very little color distortion, and then into GIF format.

If you want to modify any of our drawings, first "Save As" in 24 bit BMP, then you can copy paste without any funky or unexpected color changes to pasted bits coming from other GIFs. If you do not have a top-end program like PSP or PS, email me the BMP files, and I would be glad to convert them to GIFs.

Under no circumstances should you ever try to "Save As" in GIf format in MS Paint. MS Paint does not play well with others, and only favors BMP. emoticon

is there a reason the pics are converted to a gif file to post them?

Re: The wild and wonderful world of Microsoft Paint

it's all about the file sze.

for example. My R2 drawing, which is relatively small, in bmp format is 212kb and in optimized gif format is only 9kb

can you imagine the Action VI or the Corvette in BMP format? too big.

Lucas

Re: The wild and wonderful world of Microsoft Paint

is there a way to save custom colors?

maybe a plugin?

what I have been doing for big pics is to create a small image(say 20x20) and just paint a small square(3x3 pixels) then paste that into my image that is being worked on so I can have easy access to the various colors within the smale image.I also save new colors as I go

but when working on a small image this is not as flexible it would be much easier if the various colors could just be put into the color pallet

Here are the RBG values (in that order) for the colors Frank uses as seen on the Legend of SWDPA website.

bulkheads 99,156,156
verticle door 0,0,255
floor hatches 0,132,255
sloped deck 0,214,214
smooth deck 132,255,255
sliding door pockets 0,255,132
wall/floor light 255,255,0

seats 189,189,189 border 132,132,132
curved doors 0,132,255 border 0,0,255
ion thruster 0,255,255 inner border 0,132,255 outer border 0,0,255
transparasteel 0,255,255, border 0,132,255
machinery 156,206,99 border 0,132,0
wall padding 255,206,99 border 255,132,66

the other details are cut and paste.

in MSPaint click your pallet, then define custom colors and type in the appropiate number. Add them to your custom colors.
