Distinctive Deckplanning
There were many things that have been done the wrong way in the past. In order to surpass ourselves and make better deckplans, we have to get rid of those mistakes.
Deckplans are not aerial photos of sliced up ships. Theyr prime function is to provide clarity, which is why many things are symbolic.
Our deckplans are more or less a combination of technical diagrams, as well as common architecture and interior design. We should employ techniques used in these areas to communicate our concepts as best as possible.
What makes a table distinguishable from a cabinet? What makes it distinguishable from a shelf? Basically nothing. Not so far, however. It is obvious, if a chair is standing next to it and it is obvious, if the cabinet is a wall closet, but if it just stands in a room, we have almost no way to tell the difference between them. My fathers company has been into architecture and visualisation for more than a decade and we can employ the same techniques that we use in building design for our deckplans to make that distinction.
Therefor, I want to propose this system for ease of identification:
A table can be identified by rounded corners of at least one pixel. If it is not rounded, then it is most likely a commode (a closet or drawer with a table plate above). A shelf is marked by angled lines with each line representing one board in that shelf. If the shelf is too small to put in enough lines, do it as shown in the smaller examples and use small angled lines or dots. A closet is marked by a cross of diagonal lines, or by showing the tiling of doors it has.
Where two alternatives are shown, either decide for yourself, or let us decide as a community which one to use consistently.
I hope this will provide more clarity to our deckplans. Feel free to discuss this suggestion. I am not forcing it on you, but I urge you to use it for better visual identification.

Re: Distinctive Deckplanning
Good idea. But if we employ standart versions od standart looks for all objects then we're in great need for an archive to look these things up.
The parts collection should be up fast now.

Re: Distinctive Deckplanning
this is a very good idea, I have always wondered how the old system made the distinction in the past, without a boat load of saggittal views.

Re: Distinctive Deckplanning
Just because I have seen that some already voted for the second option:
A vote for discussion is completely useless, if you don't post your opinion. Without an exchange of opinions, there will be no possibility for any kind of discussion. So please don't vote for discussion, if you don't intend to discuss it.

Re: Distinctive Deckplanning
We'll need to put it in a legend format and add it to the parts board.

Re: Distinctive Deckplanning
I always indicated what was in a room by including it in the capsule. This new idea might make the job easier.

Re: Distinctive Deckplanning
Okay... No real discussion so far, besides the fact that it will have to be included in the parts compilation and therefor in the legend. Okay, that was something I really took for granted.

Re: Distinctive Deckplanning
I think the real discussion will be after the parts start rolling in. As in: how to standardize identification, if we need to include in-depth capsules and such.

Re: Distinctive Deckplanning
Since most of these vessels that everyone is doing has different tastes and styles, I like the differing looks to standard objects. I believe that proper documentation (stats, capsules, variants, etc.) should go with each ship and is almost as important as the deckplans themselves. Perhaps we should start this with one ship and see how it goes.
