Re: Distinctive Deckplanning

Xynar, different taste and style are a nice thing, but they have little to do with symbolism. A deckplan is, first of all, supposed to be easily understandable and it should make as much sense as possible without the documentation. This is the same reason, why we use standardised colours. If a cabinets looks different in every deckplan, it is a problem for those using it and as soon as ships get bigger, you'd have to write books about them to explain all these things in a capsule.

It should also be noted that all movable furniture is only an example furniture. Almost every ship will come in dozens of furniture variants, even if it is just a light freighter and they will also be availlable without any furniture at all besides the basic essentials.

Then why have different exterior colors for the plan. All hulls should be the same or lightened to move emphasis away from it. I'm just being a devil's advocate. And I have to then agree with Frank in that the exterior color/paint scheme should be simple and easy to change for others when the ship is stock.

Frank never said all ships should be uniform in color and none of his ships are anyway. Besides, this has nothing at all to do with internal symbolism.

Are you talking about hull shading or about distinctive furniture? emoticon

Indeed. We are attempting to find a way to make a distinctive and informative deckplan structure for the ships. Ultimately to improve on what has been started, and to make things much more useful and modular, for the community.

Sure we could, but that is way below the level of detail we are working in. Don't mix topics, please and don't mix scales.

Going to go with "Good idea, but it needs more discussion".
Reason: while you have a few real good examples, we need to figure out how non-squared objects are going to be represented (i.e. round objects, hull contoured, etc...)

I have not seen many round closets in my life and a rounded shelf is just the same as a straight shelf.

Re: Distinctive Deckplanning

Some people call for strong leadership of a single overlord. I believe in democracy and collective decisions and so far, I feel this topic proves my trust in that system right.

So far we have 100% votes in favor and after almost two weeks, I have closed the vote now. 40% wanted additional discussion. Since the additional discussion has not been continued, I take it that everyone is more or less satisfied.

Therefor, my question is: Shall we consider this way of drawing and distinguishing these furniture things mandatory for our collective deckplanning effort then? Mandatory for our new soon-to-come gallery page, that is. Nothing is ever mandatory for the private stuff you do for no one but yourself. emoticon

Opinions, please. emoticon

I don't believe any of it should be mandatory. But by having it out there, it will provide better insight to the people working on the deckplans.

So your parts gallery page would be ideal for this. Standardized parts and how things should look - but each deckplan could have some changes in them.
