Shading Tutorial
As promised, I have deleloped this explanation or tutorial on how I made the shading of the A Wing. I did the entire ship with this process.
I should tell you that it is ridiculously tedious, but the results are very accurate and only determined by the levels of shading you intend to impliment. For example, the more 'steps' in shading, the more realistic the end result. I used FIVE levels of shading to reduce the amount of work I had to do and still maintain a good result.
In this section, I will use the TOP view of the canopy of the A wing as the example.
First, the width is determined...57 pixels,
so we draw a circle 57 pixels across, then edit it so that it is accurately represented (due to a glitch in later iterations of the operating system).
So, now we have to divide the circle in half along the centre line, to determine the shading on one side (1/4 of the circle). This is determined by the way the circle is shaped on a computer. So, the straight line at the equator is the lightest colour(and widest), and the straight line at the edge is the darkest colour(and thinnest).
We have to divide this into Five descending sections. The illustration below shows how I accomplished this.
This is a very complex shape, and this process needs to be done for every section as it gets narrower and narrower.
After completing that, sadly you will not be done, especially for this type of shape. The canopy is a stretched egg shape and is not uniform, so we have to clean the image afterwards in order to make the shading give the feel of the curvature of the glass. Sadly this is done by eyeballing, so I don't have a hard and fast way to do it...I just played with it until it looked right to me.
This is illustrated here;
I hope this is helpful, like I said, this can be an intimidating technique due to the labour intensive aspect of it, but the results really speaqk for themselves.
Any suggestions or comments are most welcome.
kind regards,
Lucas

Very good luc. Now we can teach others to generate Yellow scale images.
Hey now -- I resemble that remark!
Thanks for the how-to Lucas. It's simple and makes sense even though it's a tedious chore to accomplish (but then again I can't see any way to break it down into a more mathematical formula... well not yet anyway...).

If you do, make a chart, and share it. If we can teach the rules, the rest will come natualy, at least in theory.
