Re: Galactic map
It would work for website as well. You can save to .bmp with most drafting programs (or better yet save it as a PDF so peopple can download that then have it printed, therefoer no loss of quality) I can sent you an example if you give me your email (or get mine from Frank).
You can get programs off the shelf which will be able to do all of these things.

Re: Galactic map
Yeah.
But I think we are jumping the gun for a moment.
We need to know what format the maps are going to be. I know Frank has mentioned physical poster-sized maps--at least I think they are susposed to be physical. I need Frank to explain his plans for printing and distributing these poster maps. I feel like I am missing something.
As far as generating maps for a website, I have been tooling around with Rhino to create a map template that I can zoom sections of and take screen shots for templates which can then be used in other programs to make the maps.
I'm not going to buy any special software that I'm not going to use for anything else.
As it is, not everyone who wants to contribute will have the same software and MSPaint is one that all Windows users will have. The end result will most likely have to be MSPaint productions no matter what tools we have to aid in that developement.

Re: Galactic map
Considering that the end user of this map would most likely be the gamer/GM who would print this off and use it in his/her games, it might be best to keep the map(s) to letter size (8.5" x 11") as that's what most personal printers use.

Most printers can print posters by using multiple sheets of paper.

Re: Galactic map
Yep Unc, that's what I was thinking in regards to a website version.

Correct Grtak.
MS paint always prints at 96dpi so if the image is too big, it uses multiple sheets. I have done some big boys in my time, like the Action 6. http://banned.ytmnd.com/

Re: Galactic map
I was just playing the new SW Empire at War demo and noticed there is a map that has many systems on it. this may be usfull to take a peak at just to see where they have the systems placed.
The next time I am playing it, I will try to get a screen capture of it.

The Scans are here
Here are all the WEG maps. These maps are the most comprehensive ever done for STAR WARS, and they are not much more than fragments. If any of you know of more of these that I missed, let me know and I'll scan, and add them. See Link below:
The Astrogation Charts of STAR WARS
These maps came from the following sources:
Flashpoint! Brak Sector p. 11
SW Planets Collection p. 100
The Kathol Rift p. 8
Dark Stryder: The Adventure Book p. 3
Kathol Outback pp. 11-13
SW Lords of the Expanse SG pp. 18-19
Far Orbit Project p. 52
Lords of the Expanse Campaign Guide pp. 10-11
The Twin Stars of Kira p. 3
Secrets of the Sisar Run p. 19
The STAR WARS RPG 2nd ED R&E p. 194
I have some astrogation charts to scan as well. Some sectors only have travel times, and no map, so more to come. http://banned.ytmnd.com/

Re: Galactic map
Let me get see if I got this straight, Frank.
You want a large map done in MSPaint on a pretty huge canvas, at least at 5 pixels per lightyear so that some data about the system can be conveyed, that gamers can download and print in a series of pages?

Re: Galactic map
Well in the off chance this has some good info, here are the screen captures from SW:Empire at War's galactic map.
top left
top right
bottom left
bottom right
There is some duplication of planet systems from left to right and top to bottom.
