You want a large map done in MSPaint on a pretty huge canvas, at least at 5 pixels per lightyear so that some data about the system can be conveyed, that gamers can download and print in a series of pages?
As amazing as it may seem, yes something like that. finding a way to make it as small and still readable as possible will be our challenge. We may have to do a large sector map, and then do each sector as its own map, or maybe we can find a way to make one giant map. We are still gathering information and doing a feasability study here, so I still have only a basic idea of what this will become, if it does become anything.

Grtak, your heart is in the right place (your not Vulcan are you?), but that is more like a menu not a map. What we are doing here is like reconstructing a 2000-year-old vase with an incomplete set of pottery shards. http://banned.ytmnd.com/

And that vase was made by a dozen different craftsmen/women who didn't always confer with each other on what kind of vase they were making...

Re: Galactic map
Have you thought about using this map:http://www.nav-computer.com/ I would then expand it and make travel times.
The reason I mention it is because of the SW Novels, especially the new ones have this type of map in the front of the books. Also the guy doing this map has only put in locations of known planets.

The problem is Tiree, that picture is not a map, its a piece of stylized art. The galaxy picture from "Vector Prime" and the following novels, is on an angle, we are proposing one that would be a circle-top-view, not an oval on an angle. We are also proposing taking all known system information and organizing it so it will fit on a circular grid. A grid that will allow easy calculation of travel time.

Re: Galactic map
I did a search for astrogation maps and found this:
http://www.swcombine.com/navcomp/
it has a travel time guide based on pilot skill and hyperdrive number.
double click on a dot(planetery system)as your staring point, and double click your end point and ask it to calculate the time it takes to get there.
From Tatooine to Alderaan takes 15 days 15 hours 12 min. at pilot skill 6 and hyperdrive 1.

Re: Galactic map
I think you found something rather useful. I think making it bigger, and far less abridged would be a good idea, but this is the best galactic map I have seen so far. Well done Jason!!! It gives me ideas. If this could be done on a greater scale, it would solve the galactic navigation problem with the RPG.

Re: Galactic map
I did some travel calculations with the site Jason, and most of the travel times are 3 to 5 times longer than they should be. I find this fact rather strange, but surely we can fix that on our map.

Re: Galactic map
I was Chapters today and looked over a couple of the Star Wars books they had there. Namely;
The New Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels, which has full colour illustrations of the ships and some basic dimensional data...however, most of them are derived from the Vigil stuff, like the A wing and the CR-90, also the colour stuff is not orthographic, but 'beauty' shots...they reveal nothing of real interest...with perhaps the small exception of the logos at the front of the book on every company indicated....however, they do not necessarily jive with the structure of the companies they portray.
The New Essential Chronology Now this is far more interesting. It attempts to put a timeline on all events indicated in the movies, the EU...a cursory look was very interesting...and there is a very nice galactic map at the back of the book which differs from the Galactic maps indicated on the sites I have seen online (linked in this thread). Of course, the location of the planets would seriously require analysis...but it really looks good....sadly it is not a fold out map which I would have preferred, but I am definitely considering purchasing the book.
I was curious to know if anyone else has seen or owns these books. If yes, some scans would be most appreciated.
regards,
Lucas
