They want the extra 5 bucks up front for the maps they will let everyone else have later for free.

You need to set your settings in the control panel to always off

okay, so it's been out for about a week. the average 'official' reviews appear to be in the mid to high 80 percent range, while user reviews tend to be much higher. Has anyone picked up this game yet?

Please share your thoughts here.

While I did enjoy the demo, I tend to wait until the price of games comes down or goes on sale.

Re: Star Wars: Empire at War

well, I caved and bought it last night. I finished the tutorial, which is pretty impressively deep.
I found the controls a little hard to get used to...as the selection of units is sufficiently different from other RTS games to require a bit of 'rewiring' from my habits, but as with most things, it is merely a matter of time. The amount of options available are huge, and I love unleashing Darth Vader on the poor rebel scum. The voice of vader is not perfect, but it's close and not bad...the things he says are pure classic.

The graphics are very good and surprisingly detailed. There are however a few issues with the ship designs...for example, the ISD's have the correct texturing, but the models are simplified and not exactly correct. There appear to be some scale issues, but considering the size of the game, and the fact that eventually you can command and control the DEATH STAR ITSELF....I can overlook those minor issues.
This game is bleeding HUGE, over 80 planets to conquer, not only on the ground but in orbit as well.

The method of earning credits is really well done too...no more bloody farming and mining, which was fine for Command and Conquer and Dune 2, but for a Star Wars game, or current generation RTS? I don't think so. The way that the forces are built up are very cool. The Empire has to build all their bases and training facilities, while the rebels actually steal credits and units from the empire...very very cool!

This really is a great game, and I can't wait to play more.
