Actually, the coloration is supposed to be reminiscent to naval ship coloration, but it looked too cheesy to paint the whole lower hull red. Originally, I tried grey top, dark grey seperator line and red lower hull. Didn't look good. So I switched it to preserve the same basic look.

Since many of the Ortiginal Trilogy ships were inspired by WWII battleships, the Starsword draws heavily from WWI era warships to show a certain heritage. The Imperial German battleship Scharnhorst (the WWI Scharnhorst. Not the WWII namesake) was one of the most important inspirations, as was the HMS Dreadnought. Another inspiration were cold war era soviet ballistic missile subs.

This is one of the minelauncher arrays of the ship.

Image

Each launcher has a rotating base so that the whole volley can be aimed in a specific direction with adjustable spray and scattering. The mines themselves can be set to stop at a preset distance and maintain position in order to establish a minefield, explode on impact to act as a defense measure against enemy picket ships in close combat, or to spaceburst on a preset position to confuse or destroy enemy fighters and missiles. The minelauncher can also be loaded with chaff and flare payloads.

Space Battleship Yamato IS a naval ship, turned into a spaceship, so it doesn't count. emoticon

So each mine is a "smart" weapon, or small droid, with fule and such to maintain its exact posiition?

How big are these mines by the way? And how many mine arrays do you plan on placing on your ship?

Re: Starsword-Class Command Cruiser

Depending on the exact warhead configuration, the mines are semi-smart weapons. They are euipped with the guidancesystems necessary to maintain a position, but that is not very hard. The ship launches them on a prechosen trajectory and all the mine has to do is stop at the right time, which is calculated as a delay upon deployment. To actually maintain a relative position, each mine has a shortrange transponder, with a reach of about 20 metres. The mines lock into each others transponder and use basic repulsor-tractor systems to lock into each others mass shadow.

Each mine has a diameter of 50cm and is about one and a half meters tall. Each mine's warhead is composed of 6 sub-warheads, able to spead out and hit multiple targets to create a deathzone for enemy fighters.

These are the ship-to-ship-missile launchers of the Starsword-Class. They fire anti-capship cruise missiles similar in purpose to an Exocet or Harpoon missile and will be mounted beside the main turrets. They can be reloaded from the inside of the ship.
