Paul ,

NovaTech has come up with a winner this time.

As for a name may i suggest thinking along the lines of beasts of prey,

  ala Star Wars.

Void, that's exactly what I discovered when I tried the swing wing idea. It doesn't work enough to make a difference. If I really wanted that option, I'd have to make new wings.

The wings are more or less pylons so that customers can attach a wide variety of equipment to them, like additional manuevering thrusters for better manuevering, and things like, well, weapons.

But of course, for those customers that would rather be conspicuously law-abiding, you can get the option of extended docking ports, no wings, and a rash of **** from our sales rep.

If a man's ship is his castle. . .

Image

Why not include a portcullis? And a docking jetty battering ram for the persintant boarder.

These devices are spring launched and retracted by hydraulics. The locking latches are released either by an eletric signal, or cable. Now that recess should make sense. The wing also creates an impedence. Of course there are those of you that feel that if you make criminals mad, they'll kill you, so they must be pandered to. I don't uphold that philosophy. Criminals are lazy, otherwise they'd get jobs like the rest of us. Its not that difficult to put a gun in someone's face and demand money. So if boarding a ship looks like a 4 hour job, well. . .we'll go after someone else who is easier to pick on.

Stations hould have jetties that would be long enough to accomodate this arrangement.

Nice idea, but the mechanism is far too big and could be made smaller. You would get the same results from only two straight piston driven cylinders with 1-2 meters distance from the hatch. If triggered in advance, theyd hinder docking, and if triggert during docking they would damage the docking device.

However, my favorite anti docking device is a shape charge thermite pack. When a docking device tries to attach, melt it. Even medium damage is enough to cripple most boarding airlocks.

I don't think that many pirates will kill you if they can't board you and I never said so, but imperial troops will.

To quote myself from the anti-boarding system thread: "Against pirates there are much more possibilities then there are against imperial troops. Pirates will perhaps retreat, if you put up too much of a ressistance. The empire will kill you. "

Still, that portcullis looks cool. emoticon

The idea is to deter the pressure suited fellow with the plasma torch.

"Damn that's a lot of **** to cut through. . ."

What keeps him from taking a walk on the hull to the bridge and cut through the window? emoticon

reinforced laminated 'glass' that is several inches thick, internally mounted blast doors, monofilament laser shield (like a lightsaber blade). there are all sorts of things that are possible...but that would make this the ship for the agoraphobic paranoid smuggler. emoticon
