Organisation of the Junkpile

Okay, Frank asked how the Kitbash is going to be organised and Lucas suggested to take that to the Core. So here we go.

So far I have a collection of about 200 items, growing. Most is not kitbashed so far, but self made. But the compendium is supposed to be as complete as possible, so there is more kitbashing needed.

I have talked with Lucas about that in the irc channel and so far we have agreed that bundling items into cathegories of similarity is perhaps the best way. Possible catergories would be Hyperdrives, Thrusters, Reactors, Sensors, Furniture, Escape Pods, Emergency Equipment and so on.

I don't think it is good to write tiny names besides every object, because that leaves little space for explanation, many will be similar and it scales up the images unnecessarily. It would be better to number the items and add an identification table. When there is something interesting to say about the item, then there will be space to say it. If it is just "Item 1-25: Different types of seats. 26-59: Different tables." then we don't need to write "table" beneath each item. When there are ship models or manufacturers associated to individual parts, they too can be mentioned in an id table without clogging up the images.

another possibility is to make each image a link to the corresponding table item, so that clicking on it will lead to it's description and possibly stats.

Yes, but that is not part of my work. I will organise and collect everything and commit myself to organise the classifications as well, but how it is presented in html-land, I'll gladly leave to someone else, once I am done. emoticon

I will be happy to work something out once we have enough material to compile

I think it's a good idea myself... after all, if you're wanting to mod an existing deckplan you're gonna have specific wants/needs and scrolling through dozens of images you don't want/need is going to be confusing and tedious. That's not exactly making things convenient for someone utilizing the site's resources.

I think they also should be grouped by scale (red/yellow/blue) to make it easier to sort through.

I think that each component can be eventually in each scale on the same reference.

there would be a sheet with all the parts by category as indicated above.

You click on one of the components, and that links to a minipage with that component in each scale and a full description of all details in text on manufacturer, energy use, cost and all that jazz.

I like that idea better. It'd be less links to fiddle with.

Making everything in each scale is useless in my opinion and a waste of work. So far I have done about 300 items for blue scale deckplans. Making them in the other scales would take longer to make over 1000(!) items in blue scale and now think about which scale most people use to mod... Of course we don't need thousands of items, but I think blue scale should have absolute priority.

Of course our system will include the _option_ for the same item in different scales, but I will not do that in the first run. emoticon

that's fine for now. Bluescale is obviously the main scale, so we will use that first. later we can add the other scales to those components for the smaller ships...it might actually end up being less than 1000 parts due to the size of some of the components, like pianos and pool tables and power cores...and stuff. emoticon
