women as ACTUAL martial arts competetors in Ancient Days?
women as ACTUAL martial arts competetors in Ancient Days?
On another site I was informed:
quote: (the Romans tried an incredible number of combinations) and of the fighters.[in the Arena, including females]
Could you go into detail? I am curious because I only know the Movie trident and sword combination, or spear and axe... the usual.
I know you guys have made a proper study of it.
I do recall reading that the exotic dwarf and animal fights were innovations that were driven by crowd boredom because all the usual match ups were predictable in moves, counter moves and outcomes with men of equal skill...
And I have not yet been convinced Women actually fought in the arena except for one or two perverse society women or geek show match ups.
In reality women are not serious competitors with men, the male verses female martial arts fights always being one pro female and a loud mouth jerk, not a real match.

A gladiator of either sex, it was a pricey investment; up to half a million dollars in today's cash. Having a netman steam-rolled by a Xiphos-wielding female hoplite, it would be bad for business.
Think of gladiator-related businesses like today's drugs dealers, they want to get as much mileage out of their product as feasibly possible. Upwards of 90% of gladiators survived, in all probability; the aforementioned were the more heavily armored types of gladiators(like myrmillios, peltasts, and hoplites).
