Yahoo! GeoCities shutting down in October
After many happy years of service, the popular free website-hosting service GeoCities, currently owned by Yahoo!, will be shut down on October 26th.
GeoCities is the latest victim in a new streamlining initiative by Yahoo that will also see the demise of a number of other services, many of them free, including the popular networking chat service Yahoo! 360.
Yahoo! is replacing GeoCities with a new premium hosting service. It's being advertised as $5 US for the first month and $10 US a month after that, but the fine print reads '12-month term' - a commitment that will set subscribers back by $115 US a year once they sign up.
As usual, this decision is all about making money.
Shame to see GeoCities go under these circumstances.
Thanks to Skipster over on Oldies but Goodies for the heads-up.

Re: Yahoo! GeoCities shutting down in October
Reminder
GeoCities will be closing down, and its sites will no longer be available, as of next Monday, October 26th, 2009.
The Internet Archive website ( http://www.archive.org ) is working to backup as much as they can from GeoCities sites.
In any event, if you have a favorite GeoCities site, be sure to click and save everything you need from those sites before the end of next weekend.
