…
This is one day that I will never forget where I was when I found out.
I was shopping and got to the cash register and the attendant was talking to a co-worker at another counter and kind of ignoring us. When she finally saw us, she appologized but said they were listening to the radio and that one of the twin towers had been hit. We couldn't believe it. We went next door to WalMart and they had new on all their TVs there and while we were there the 2nd plane flew into the towers.
Does anyone else remember where they were when they heard about the terrible news that day.
It was several days before we ever got any thing on TV but the news from New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.

Re: September 11th 2001
I was at work, and it was the Tuesday right after Tai Chi camp. It was broadcasted on the radio, and the news really spread around the greenhouses. We only had a couple of computers which had access to the internet, and I saw some of the pictures of the second plane slamming into the second tower.
I went to my boyfriends place after work and we both sat in disbelief in front of his TV. The world really has not been the same since.

Re: September 11th 2001
Thank you, Erika, for the great decorations for this occasion.
There is a DVD I bought. It is called simply "9/11". It is actually a documentary that was being filmed about the life of a rookie fireman. They had followed this man from school thru to his being in the firehouse. It is a great DVD if you ever get to see it. It contains a picture of the first plane hitting the Twin Towers. They happened to be out on the streets filming in the area of the Towers when it hit. Planes are not allowed to fly over Manhattan and they heard this plane and turned their camera up to see what was happening. It was something to see and to hear the reaction of the firemen. They were in shock.

Re: September 11th 2001
I lived in New York in 2001 -- about 120 miles from the World Trade Center. I was working in the 4th grade at a local elementary school. School was dismissed early and we had to make sure that there was a parent or an adult at the bus stops to meet each student. We didn't want anyone going home alone. When the staff was dismissed, I remember the challenge of finding a route home. I lived within 3 miles of one of the largest reservoirs in New York State that provided water for New York City. My normal route of travel took me across the bridges of that revervoir. Because of the terrorist attack, those roads and bridges around the water supply were shut down so I had to come up with another way to get home. I remember listening to the radio in the car. Luckily my boys went to the same school where I worked so I had them with me.
A few people I knew actually saw one of the planes go over our area. The terrorists knew that if they followed the Hudson River, it would take them right to the towers. The plane was flying unusually low above the river.

That had to be a scary time for you living so close to Ground Zero. I'm glad that you weren't closer and that you did have your boys with you when you left school. I think that your school used a lot of good sense by making sure that every child had someone meeting them when they got off the bus.
