Eveyone wants to be in CHiPs
Wilmer Valderrama Gets Blessing of the Original Ponch, Estrada.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith
Apr 14, 2006
With Wilmer Valderrama set to play Ponch in the movie version of "CHiPs" this summer, he says he was relieved to get the blessing of the original Ponch, Erik Estrada.
"He came over to the set of 'That '70s Show' when I was still working there and he said to me the most beautiful thing ever. He said, 'Listen, Wilmer, I could not ever imagine anybody else better than you.' I thought that was so cool. If there's anybody I ever wanted to play, it's this guy," claims Valderrama.
As for who will play his police partner, Jon? "There are a couple of exciting names being tossed around, but I can't reveal anything yet," he responds. "It's so funny because everybody wants to be in this movie. Like the most awesome, fantastic A-listers are jumping on board and are trying to get this movie going."
Despite Hollywood's excitement, many fans have expressed concern that the movie will make fun of their beloved vintage show about the California Highway Patrol, but Valderrama assures that it won't.
"What we're doing is, we're having fun with it, but we're not making fun of 'CHiPs.' A lot of the remakes that have happened in the last couple of years have failed because they make fun of their franchise. You can't be making fun of something that at some point people cared so much about," he points out. "For the world, 'CHiPs' is a very serious drama. You can't disrespect that. What we want is for the comedy to be very organic and just be character driven -- not to have funny costumes or funny gags."

Valderrama on the CHiPs Adaptation
Source: LA Daily News April 14, 2006
The LA Daily News caught up with That '70s Show star Wilmer Valderrama and asked him about Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming adaptation of the TV series CHiPs. Valderrama will play Ponch, the character played by Erik Estrada in the series, and says the movie won't make fun of the show.
CHiPs, created by Rick Rosner and running from 1977 to 1983, followed the pursuits of California highway patrol officers Francis Llewellyn Poncherello and Jon Baker, played by Larry Wilcox, from 1977-1982.
Baker has not yet been cast.

That '70s Show actor Wilmer Valderrama has been cast to play Ponch in the movie version of CHiPs. The television series, which aired on NBC from 1977-1983, followed the professional and social antics of two California Highway Patrol motorcycle officers, "CHP" partners Frank "Ponch" Poncherello and Jon Baker.
According to LA Daily News who spoke with Valderrama, Erik Estrada, the original Ponch on the series, came by the movie set. Valderrama claims that Estrada gave him his blessings to play Ponch and said "Listen, Wilmer, I could not ever imagine anybody else better than you".
Many fans of the television series have expressed concern that the movie adaptation will lampoon the original program and Valderrama assured that "What we're doing is, we're having fun with it, but we're not making fun of 'CHiPs.' A lot of the remakes that have happened in the last couple of years have failed because they make fun of their franchise. You can't be making fun of something that at some point people cared so much about," he points out. "For the world, 'CHiPs' is a very serious drama. You can't disrespect that. What we want is for the comedy to be very organic and just be character driven -- not to have funny costumes or funny gags."
Valderrama stated that the Jon Baker character has not been cast, although interesting enough, several "A-list" actors have inquired about the role.

Re: Eveyone wants to be in CHiPs
Thanks for the update on the movie, Erika. Hope that they do get the cast set soon and can start filming. I hope that the movie does as Wilmer says and not turn out to make fun of CHiPs. There will be a lot of mad people if they do.
