An Encomium for Chris, Robert and the Pines

I don’t think anyone would dispute that the entertainment business is demanding, challenging, filled with hopeful, lofty dreams, burdened with heavy and sometimes very tragic heartaches and so very intriguing to those on the outside looking in. It is a field where you can work hard, yet hardly work at all; where opportunity knocks and hundreds show up for a chance at one coveted role; where the sensationalized 15 minute flash in the pan fame wanes, leading down the lonely path to oblivion. It is an entity where the rules are bent or rewritten to fit the circumstance; where inappropriate actions can be rewarded by publicity and the revelers bask in the attention however negative it may be because such interest feeds their egos and the bottom line is that it sells.

Of course, classifying all of Hollywood by these standards would be totally unfair as there are also many truly talented and gifted actors and actresses out there who have stood the test of time with recognition far less than what they deserve, though recognition is certainly not a prerequisite for what they accomplish. These are the individuals who have dedicated themselves to the advancement of their craft. Simply stated, they love what they do. Their motivation comes from the generosity and love in their heart and not the needy self-gratification of the ego.

One particular family of actors that have successfully found their niche in the entertainment world is the Pines. They are cloaked in humility, guided by steadfast familial values, appear so strikingly ordinary like the family next door, yet their talents and the conveyance of such are extraordinary. Beginning in the 1930’s and 40’s with the film work of Anne Gwynne through the years of Robert and Gwynne’s respective television, film and stage performances to now when Chris proudly went where no man has gone before at the helm of the Enterprise in Star Trek.

I have never had the opportunity to see any of Anne Gwynne’s work. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find any of her films in our local video rental establishments but I’m still looking. I’ve seen pictures of this lady and she was truly a beautiful person and certainly her talents and beauty were passed to her daughter Gwynne whose portrayal of Dora Lou in an episode of “Gunsmoke” is a favorite of mine. Of course, I always looked forward to those episodes of CHiPs that featured her as Betty Getraer.

Robert, of course, became a household name when he portrayed Sgt. Getraer on CHiPs. However, his career was well on its way long before that. His versatility to step into any type of role, and portray it with genuine sincerity to make it come alive in a totally believable fashion is the mark of an actor who has done his homework, gone the extra mile in preparation and, as a result, enjoys the fruit of success.

Chris, according to interviews, never started out to be an actor; but, rather fell into it during his college years at the University of California at Berkeley. I’m sure there are many young ladies (and some older ones, too) who are more than delighted he found his way into acting. I have seen just about everything he has done, except stage plays, and I can tell you he is a brilliant young actor. He has the combined good looks of both his dad and mom and he certainly has inherited their genetic infrastructure for talent. I also truly believe that, even though his parents were in the business, they saw to it that he had a normal and stable childhood. They gave him a firm foundation on which to build his own life. He is just at the beginning of his career but I do believe Chris Pine has what it takes to be very, very successful. And will this success change or spoil him in any specific way? I doubt it. I get the feeling he’s just a down to earth, ordinary type of guy.

What is so refreshing to me about the Pines is that in this “hey look at me” world, the only spotlight they want to be in is the one that shines on the theatre stage to accentuate an actors presence and role they are playing. They are people who know how to balance their quiet dignity with their charismatic kindness and remain out of that blaring, intrusive Hollywood limelight.

Robert and Gwynne should be very proud of their successes in all the phases of their lives. They have given so much to this world and their admirers and fans, like me, thank them for every play, movie, or television show they’ve ever appeared in; the humanitarian and charity work they have given their support to, and most importantly the fine and decent family they raised.

So hats off and kudos to the Pine Family – Robert, Gwynne, Katie, and Chris. May you all continue to enjoy success and happiness.

If any of this sounds a bit editorial, my apologies. When I believe in something or someone, I tend to get a bit passionate about it. And, unless you’ve all been living under a rock, you know my feelings toward the Pines.

Cc
