CREDIT CRUNCH AFFECTING LESSONS?

Giving the way the econom(ies) are at the minute just wandering if any opf you have had people pull out recently?

I had a boy - his mum phoned last night to say they coudlnt afford his 30 minuites a week anyway.

Just a bit worried this is the start of something?

I have also got a few phone calls since Xmas but just wondering if anyone has felt the "pinch" yet?

Hi James,

Suprisingly business seems strong right now. I am of course worried because I see the effects of the economy and have seen people losing jobs. But since this whole thing started I only lost 2 students and both of them said it was for other reasons. And after Christmas I had a bunch of calls and have a nice waiting list going.

But I know all of that could change very quickly.

So for now I just keep doing what I'm doing and hope for the best.

Steve

Not as of yet, apart from one gent who got laid off due to the downturn. I'm now actually at my busiest, having filled up my last slot last week and putting my first person on a waiting list this week. Since Christmas I've had enquiries every few days.

Touch wood of course.

Like I said in another thread, I just lost a student as a direct result of a job layoff last week, which was the first time the recession has caused me to lose a student. I'm still doing alright, but it made me nervous because we are now starting to see the effects of the stock market crash rippling in to the rest of the economy. Since the beginning of the housing crash in 2007, my lesson schedule has actually become increasingly busy as the economy as a whole deteriorated. I keep wondering when things will get bad enough where people will no longer be willing to pay for guitar lessons. I don't think we are there yet, but we'll see what happens in the next year or so.

Further to my post on this - I have had 3/4 calls since Xmas which has surprised me now I am frustrated I cant fit them all in! LOL

But I am cautious of the effects of the economy etc... as I had said I lost a boy last week because his mum openly told me they couldn't afford it anymore.

I havent taken on as many since Sept in the schools as I should have due to things on at home and am a bit reluctant to increase my workload again now but am thinking a good run up to the end of the school year would see me through the summer comfortably.

Actually got a text yesterday from an old student in a local comprehensive school who wants me to take him in school instead of the schools guitar tutor - so hopefully things will stay on an even keel for the rest of the year?

Might just get some extra savings put away - just in case?

I guess for adults anyway - its a question of how much the guitar is a priority in their lives and if they can afford it?

James

It hasn't affected me yet, but I start back at school in two weeks and I'll find out then. The school I teach in has a fairly affluent population, and I also have 7 kids who've moved onto secondary school wanting after school lessons so I'm in good nick so far.

If you set your attitude right then times of recession can be boom time for guitar tutors - I know because I have worked through three of them so far (and no, that's not including the Wall Street Crash of 1929! emoticon )

In a recession a great many people get made redundant or take early retirement. A considerable number of these folk use their redundancy money to buy a guitar and take up lessons like they always wanted to but couldn't afford the time or money for whilst working.

We're not necessarily headed into BAD times - just times of CHANGE. The trick is to think less like a Rabbit in the Headlights emoticon and more like a Born Opportunist! emoticon

Good luck to all of you!

I agree with Nick I still have a full schedule I did have a couple drop out but due to finishing school. I still get lots of inquiries so I think we need to ride it out

Just further to my post - Ive just had another long time student pull out on me tonight. Again the worry sets in I think I'm gonna have to have more people than I need and face it - just have to do more hours in case this keeps happening.

Frightening when its your whole income! Wel;l the mortgage anyway at the minute.

This guys mum said his dad is in the building trade and hasn't worked since Christmas.

Just wondering again if anyone else affected recently?

Cheers

James
