Re: Orangeblossom Bramble of Willowbottom: A History

It was because of this comradeship that Orangeblossom found it hard to relate to other hobbits of the opposite gender. No other lads, it seemed, so captured her heart.

Orangeblossom also walked the fields alone on occasion. On one of these solo journeys, she found herself deep in thought. What was it, she often wondered, that so limited her choice of male companions to those so much her senior?

Mama, she asked Bariathan one day, is something wrong with me?

Why do you ask, daughter? Bariathan put an arm around Orangeblossoms shoulder.

Why is it, Orangeblossom wondered, that the only Hobbit males I find myself truly relating to are Masters Baggins and Gamgee?

You mean Frodo and Sam?

Orangeblossom nodded, looking up at her mother in confusion.

Theyve loved you, Bariathan smiled, ever since you were born. Dont feel sorry, she advised her, that no other lads seem to attract your attention at this time. And if one should someday capture your heart, dont worryIm sure theyll understandand rejoice with you.

Unbeknownst to Orangeblossom, Sam and Frodo were just then coming up the walk to visit their favorite Hobbit.

Oh Orangeblossom hid herself in the crook of her mothers arm.

Bariathan found herself torn between comforting her daughter and welcoming her guests.

Hello, she said, rising to greet Sam and Frodo.

Whats troubling sweet Orangeblossom? Sam approached and put an arm around her shoulder, while Frodo kneeled nearby.

Shes just worriedI thinkthat she may not find a suitable mate, Bariathan explained. You two seem to be the only ones she feels she can truly relate to.

Is that true? Frodo asked her, not unkindly, as he took Orangeblossoms hand.

I Orangeblossom found it hard to speak.

Dont be shy, Sam smiled upon her. You can tell us.

Orangeblossom sighed. Yes, she confessed, looking at the two concerned friends. Its true.

I know theres got to be someone out there. Sam smiled. Someone just waiting for a sweet maiden like you.

Have you even tried? Frodo wanted to know.

Ive attended a few parties, Orangeblossom admitted, mingled with a few of the malesbut none seemed truly interested.

I think its time, Frodo said, looking at Sam, for a visit to Merry and Pippin.

Come on, Sam said, taking Orangeblossoms hand and helping her up from the bench where she sat, were going to visit some relatives of Frodos. Maybe they can help you make sense of all this.

Good luck, dear, Bariathan called after them as they headed down the road.

They walked for what seemed like hours. Finally, they reached a little spot in the Shire where Merry and Pippin sat enjoying a little snack.

Come in, come in, Merry rose to greet their visitors.

What brings you to this part of the Shire? Pippin wanted to know.

This is Orangeblossom, Sam said, bringing the maiden forward.

Ah, yes, I remember when you were born, Merry laughed.

Such a sweet young miss, Pippin added.

She seems to think no other Hobbit lads interest her besides us, Frodo grinned.

I see, Pippin was deep in thought. And what is it about them that interests you?

They make me laugh, Orangeblossom replied, laughing herself.

And no one else seems to do that? Merry asked.

Not really, Orangeblossom sighed. Goodness knows Ive looked.

Well, dont dwell on it too much, Merry advised. I cant imagine a pretty young maiden like you not finding a mate.

Maybe its time, Frodo said with a sigh, that we just didnt spend so much time together.

But Orangeblossoms eyes filled with tears. I love you guys.

We love you too, Orangeblossom, Sam said, holding her close. But maybe its time we set you freeto see if you could clear your mind and find someone special to spend the rest of your life with.

But Orangeblossom interjected again, Im just afraid

Dont worry, Frodo laughed, as if he could read her mind, wed never forget you.

Never in a million ages, Sam said, bending down to kiss her forehead.

And so it was, for the first time, that Orangeblossom set out on her own. What she might find, she didnt know. But she knew she had familyand friendswho loved her.

On and on she wandered, until she could walk no more. She was tiredand sweatyand in need of some rest.

She collapsed against a local tavern and fell fast asleep.

Sorry for the delay! Here is the next chapter! :glad:

How long she had slept, she wasn’t sure, but when she awakened, she found herself in a soft, comfortable bed. Concerned eyes looked upon her.

“Where—where am I?” she moaned, rubbing her eyes.

“Shhh…rest now,” a kind voice instructed. “You’ve had quite a journey—and that bump on your head doesn’t help matters much.”

Orangeblossom rubbed her eyes, waiting for everything to come into focus.

“Who are you, anyway?” her caretaker wanted to know.

“Orangeblossom Bramble,” Orangeblossom replied. “I come from a tiny village called Willowbottom.”

“Ohhh…” Her caretaker was deep in thought. “Daughter of Oriothon and Bariathan, right?”

“That is correct,” Orangeblossom replied, wondering what was going on. “But—where am I?” she asked again.

“A long way off from Willowbottom, I’m afraid,” was the reply. “Michel Delving.”

“I’m Siagrin, by the way,” he added, as he helped her up to a sitting position.

Orangeblossom groaned as she rose, still a bit achy from collapsing in the streets of Michel Delving. Hobbling, she attempted to take her first steps.

“How rude can I be,” Siagrin laughed, allowing her to drape an arm around his shoulder. “I bet you’d like a nice hot bath—to soothe those aching joints.”

Her eyes glistened with hope. That was the one thing she had longed for—long before he rescued her.

The bathing area was not far, so he helped her walk there. “Thank you,” Orangeblossom gasped. “I can’t thank you enough for taking me in.”

“It was no problem at all,” Siagrin replied.

Finally, they reached the bathing area. A closed door greeted them, but when Orangeblossom put her hand to the handle, it was warm to the touch. She jerked back her hand in astonishment.

“The steam,” Siagrin laughed. “I made sure it was hot enough for you.”

She opened the door just far enough to be blasted by the hot air. Condensation formed on her skin as she walked to the hot pool.

“Have a nice bath,” Siagrin whispered, before he closed the door.

Orangeblossom quickly divested herself of her clothing. Sitting down at the pool’s edge, she eased her legs in. She winced as she reacted to the hot water.

By and by she got used to it, as she eased more of herself in.

Mud and other grime had caked on her since her fall, and it now melted away in the mix of heat and moisture.

She found herself slipping away into another world. She closed her eyes, dreaming of the day when she brought home her betrothed to Oriothon and Bariathan—and even Sam and Frodo.

Sam and Frodo. She opened her eyes, feeling hot tears run down her cheeks. They had been so kind to her in her childhood—and even beyond. How were they faring without her?

Re: Orangeblossom Bramble of Willowbottom: A History

It was quiet in the little abode that Sam and Frodo shared. They sat at supper, not eating much of anything. There was no doubt what was on their minds—had they made the right decision in sending Orangeblossom off to find a mate?

“I’m going for a walk,” Sam finally decided.

“I’m coming with you,” Frodo said, rising to follow him.

The cold air brushed against their bodies as they set out. They soon passed one of the forests that they had shared so often with Orangeblossom.

The soft pitter-patter of rain could be heard as they stood there, mourning what they had lost. “Why,” Frodo moaned. “Why did we send her out so soon?”

“I could’ve stood for a few more days with her myself, Frodo,” Sam agreed, sighing.

It was hard to tell where the tears started and the rain ended, as the two huddled together, mourning the loss of one of the best friends they had ever had.
