Re: Orangeblossom Bramble of Willowbottom: A History

Over the next few months, Siagrin and Orangeblossom adjusted to their new life. Then one day, examining herself, Orangeblossom had a sickening feeling…

I’m getting fat, she thought, looking at herself from all sides.

It was then that she saw Pippin coming up the road.

Smiling, she recalled how he and Merry had helped her come to the decision to leave Willowbottom for a while—which, in an ironic sort of way, led her to Siagrin.

“How are the newlyweds?” Pippin laughed, as he greeted Orangeblossom.

“We’re fine,” Orangeblossom replied, “but I think I’m getting a bit fat.”

“Let me see,” Pippin said.

As Orangeblossom opened the door, Pippin’s mouth hung open as he realized what had actually transpired.

“You’re not fat, Blossom,” he reassured her. “You’re just—expecting.”

Expecting—as in with child! Orangeblossom could hardly believe it!

“Oh my goodness,” she gasped, sliding to the ground.

“What’s this?” Another voice resounded from around the corner.

Looking up, the pair was surprised and pleased to find Merry joining them.

“What are you doing on the ground?” he laughed, as he and Pippin helped her up.

“Our sweet Blossom has a bun in the oven,” Pippin explained.

“Congratulations!” Merry gave her a big hug. “Does Siagrin know about this?”

“No,” Orangeblossom replied, blushing. “Not yet.”

Orangeblossom gasped, as she recalled two—no, make that four—others who might want to know.

“What is it?” Merry smiled, taking hold of her hand. “Who else did you just think of?”

“Mother and Father,” Orangeblossom replied. Lowering her voice to a whisper, she added, “and Sam and Frodo.”

“Well, of course you’ll want to tell Sam and Frodo,” Pippin laughed. “They’ll be so excited for you, I’m sure!”

“What’s this we hear about a bun in the oven?” came some more familiar voices.

Orangeblossom knew those voices well—

She turned just in time to see Sam and Frodo coming up the walk.

“It’s true,” Orangeblossom laughed, as they approached. Hugs and kisses abounded, as they all congratulated her and had their turn feeling for the little one inside.

No sooner had they backed away than Orangeblossom heard familiar hoofbeats. It was Siagrin, coming home.

“Looks like you’ve got a regular reunion there,” he laughed. “To what do I owe this little gathering?”

“Come on out, Blossom,” Sam smiled. “Show him what you just found out.”

They all backed away so Siagrin could get a glimpse of the big news.

“No way,” Siagrin whispered, coming close. “You have got to be kidding.”

Orangeblossom was horrified. Wasn’t it in their plans to have children?

Her friends, as if on cue, came close to Orangeblossom to defend her. “Aren’t you happy for her?” Sam wanted to know.

“Happy?” Siagrin clasped Orangeblossom’s hands in his own. “Why, this is the most wonderful news I’ve ever heard!” He took Orangeblossom in his arms and gave her a big hug, lifting her off the ground.

Finally returning Orangeblossom to terra firma, he gave her a long, loving kiss.

Orangeblossom started to feel a little queasy. Whether it was from being lifted so high or from something else, she just wasn’t sure.

“Come in and lie down for a little while,” Frodo suggested, leading them into the hobbit hole. Finding the bed, Siagrin lay her on it and placed a damp rag on her forehead.

“Can I get anyone for you?” he whispered, taking her hand in his own.

“Mama,” Orangeblossom moaned. “Papa.”

“Of course.” Frodo glanced knowingly at Sam. “She needs them.”

“We’re coming with you,” Pippin said, as he and Merry rose.

“We’ll be right back,” Merry said, running a hand across Orangeblossom’s forehead.

“I’ll stay here,” Siagrin said, taking Orangeblossom’s hand in his own.

The little quartet made a dash back to Oriothon and Bariathan’s hobbit hole.

Bariathan was outside, tending to a few things, when she looked up and saw the panicked group.

“What is it?” she asked, the fear showing in her eyes. “Is Orangeblossom all right?”

“She’s a bit warm, I think,” Sam replied. “Feeling a bit nauseous.”

“What’s going on?” Oriothon came out to see what was happening.

“Orangeblossom’s a bit sick,” Sam replied. “It might be good for you to come.”

“Of course,” Oriothon replied.

The little band was soon back on their way to Siagrin’s hobbit hole.

“Should we have told them the reason for her illness?” Sam wondered, as the horses took off at a good gait.

“Nah,” Frodo laughed. “Let them find out on their own.”

In no time at all, the group was back at Siagrin’s hobbit hole. Orangeblossom was still a bit ill, with Siagrin by her side.

“My baby,” Bariathan whispered, coming to her side. “I’m here.”

“So good of you to come,” Siagrin said, greeting Oriothon.

“Mama…I’m so sick,” Orangeblossom moaned.

“It’ll be all right,” Bariathan reassured her, running her hand over the length of the blankets that covered her.

“Wait a minute…what’s this?” She found herself running into a lump—the very bulge that held the new baby.

She removed the blankets—then the sheet—and discovered the actual reason for the sickness.

“It can’t be…” she whispered. “…can it?”

“Yes, Mama.” Orangeblossom managed a smile. “I’m expecting.”

“So it’s just morning sickness!” Bariathan was much relieved. “I thought it was much worse!”

She squeezed Orangeblossom’s hand. “I can’t believe a new generation is coming!”

When the fever had broken, Bariathan helped Orangeblossom up to a sitting position. “Eat something,” she encouraged her. “You’ll feel a lot better.”

After a light meal of crackers and broth, Orangeblossom had to admit—she was feeling a lot better.

The main reason, she knew, was the anxious group around her—so many people who loved and cared about her.

With the scare out of the way, everyone thought it was safe to return to their own dwellings. “Take care, Blossom,” Sam said, as he and Frodo took their leave. “We love you.”

As the group left, Orangeblossom recalled what Oriothon and Bariathan had said when the trio came back from one of their outings:

quote:

“Sounds like you’ve won some hearts,” Bariathan smiled upon her daughter. “And no finer hearts can I find than these two.”

“Agreed,” Oriothon replied, smiling at Sam and Frodo. “Feel free to take her out anytime.”

They were right, she realized. There were no finer hearts anywhere—even Merry and Pippin ranked up there.

Re: Orangeblossom Bramble of Willowbottom: A History

The night was quiet—too quiet, Orangeblossom realized, as she lay in bed. She checked beside her—yes, Siagrin was there. She blinked, wondering what was going to happen.

Suddenly, it happened—pains unlike any she’d ever had before. She let out a scream that could probably be heard all over the Shire.

That was enough to rouse Siagrin. “What is it?” he asked. Orangeblossom just screamed again.

Then it hit him—the baby was coming!

Hastily dressing, he ran out, trying to get as many of the company back that had been there when the pregnancy was diagnosed.

In no time at all, he had returned—with Oriothon and Bariathan.

Orangeblossom looked around. There ought to be more, she realized. Where were Sam and Frodo? Where were Merry and Pippin?

She heard more footsteps—coming at a very quick pace.

“We came as quickly as we could,” Sam said, as he, Frodo, Merry, and Pippin came in.

“It’s about time,” Orangeblossom snapped. “What took you so long?”

She instantly regretted her harsh words. “Oh, I’m so sorry,” she said, tears rolling down her face. “I didn’t mean it like that.”

“You don’t need to apologize, sweet Blossom,” Pippin said, squeezing her hand just as another round of labor pains came. “We understand completely.”

The contractions came closer and closer. A nursemaid soon arrived to handle the delivery.

“Scat,” Bariathan teased, shooing the menfolk out. “This is women’s work.”

“It’s come full circle,” Oriothon observed, as the window became their viewing area.

It seemed as if it was taking forever, as the band looked in on the next generation going through the motions Bariathan had so long ago.

Just when Siagrin couldn’t take it much longer, the nursemaid came out.

“Siagrin,” was the soft summons.

The group looked toward the nursemaid, afraid of what they’d find.

Tears abounded, as the nursemaid handed Siagrin a bundle. “A little girl,” she whispered.

“So pretty,” Sam whispered, already feeling the soft skin. “Have you decided on a name?”

“Lily,” Siagrin whispered. “Lily Twofoot.”
