The History of Gem Brown
In the Shire?
Badger lived with her parents, Milo and Pansy Brown, with two brothers. Looking like her father, brown curly hair and had a combination of her mother and father?s eyes, they were blue green. Standing 3 feet 2 inches, Badger was a hobbit, born in the fall of 2969 and lived in the Shire, but more specifically Standelf in Buckland. Standelf was a busy town near the Brandywine River. As all hobbits live, her family lived in a hobbit hole. Badger?s real name was Gem Brown, but Gem didn?t stay Gem for long. As a young hobbit girl, she would run into the woods around her family?s hole, she would find abandon badger holds and play. In order for her mother, Pansy, to get her out, she would call out,
?Little Badger, little Badger, won?t you come out and play??
Badger stuck. Milo Brown ran a local inn in Standelf, called The Hole. Badger grew up helping in the Inn by day and learning to read and write by night by her mother, Pansy.
Now Pansy was a Bolger and had many relatives in Stock. Pansy?s relatives loved to see Pansy and her family, so Milo and Pansy built a boat to reach Stock by the Brandywine River, instead of walking. In the year 2991, Badger and Pansy made a trip to Stock while Milo and his sons ran the Inn. Pansy?s sister, Estella, had recently had a baby and Pansy wanted to see the new family member.
The trip to Stock was uneventful. There were many relatives and friends at Estella?s hole when Pansy and Badger arrived. Many great guests, such as the Brandybucks from Brandywine Hall, were cooing and cuddling baby Amaranth. Badger looked at her aunt Estella and smiled. Baby Amaranth was so darling and cute. Pansy was smitten over the baby and Badger was getting bored. Baby Amaranth was cute but got boring after five minutes. All Amaranth did was look from one hobbit to the next occasionally burping or drooling, which set off giggles and laughing from the hobbits adoring Amaranth. Pansy told Badger she could go and play with other hobbit children who had gotten bored with the baby and where off playing out above Estella?s hole. Badger smiled and raced off out of her aunt?s hole and found her cousins to play with.
Playing among the hobbit children was Meriadoc Brandybuck, son of Saradoc from Brandywine Hall. Meriadoc or Merry among friends, was very well liked among children and grown ups. Badger?s cousin Opal, who had met Merry before and had a terrible crush on him ever since, half dragged Badger to meet him. Introductions went very well. Badger really enjoyed meeting Merry Brandybuck and like her cousin, a small crush started from that moment. The rest of the afternoon, Merry, Opal and Badger talked, walked around and played with games with the other children. Merry found out that Badger lived in Standelf and promised to visit. Badger found out that Merry loved to pull jokes on people at any time or place. She laughed along with Opal when merry would tell them about jokes he had pulled on family and friends.
Dinner came and finished well into the night. Merry said goodbye to Badger and Opal, again promising to go and visit Badger in Standelf. When Badger and Opal were alone, Opal laughed and said that Badger was was lucky and said she wished she was Badger. Badger asked why and Opal answered that Merry Brandybuck usually tease and played jokes on the girls he met. Badger rolled her eyes and said that Opal was just being silly. Pansy found Badger than and told her that they would be staying the night with Estella and in the morning or afternoon they would head for home. Only neither made it home.
The next morning Pansy and Badger sat down to two breakfasts, a brunch and a lunch before they said good bye to their family. Pansy and Badger paddled along the Stockbrook and when that connected with the Brandywine River, they south to Standelf. Estella had warned Pansy before she and Badger left that Old Hilda Proudfeet said a storm was brewing and was ready to blow into Buckland. Pansy said that they would make it back to Standelf before the storm hit. Pansy was wrong.
The storm hit just before Standelf came into view. The wind blew and rain pelted the small boat. The Brandywine became very violent very quickly tossing the small boat about. Pansy told Badger to come to her. As Badger turned, perhaps a bit to fast, the boat tipped. Pansy and Badger were dumped into the Brandywine never to be seen again, or that was common thought. Milo was devastated from losing his wife and only daughter. Estella blamed herself for not keeping Pansy and Badger in Stock till the storm blew over. Milo searched the Brandywine for a chance that Pansy and Badger would turn up miraculously. That miracle never happened.

The History of Gem Brown
In Ered Luin
Badger did turn up, by miracle or not, Badger floated down the Brandywine. She floated to the banks of the Brandywine just south of the Greenway. There Badger lay until a group of traveling dwarves, heading to Ered Luin, found her. The dwares were lead by Nar, who had lost his wife fifty years before. Nar was a very kind dwarf when he wanted to be. His blue/gray beard was braided and finely kept as were the other dwarves, Gror, Borin, Farin, and Frerin. All of these dwarves never married, except for Nar, because they cared for one. Frerin was the dwarf to find Badger lying on the west bank of the Brandywine. Frerin called for the other dwarves when he went down to the Brandywine to get some water for their supper. The other dwarves came, grudgingly, saying, This had better be good. When all the dwarves were present, Frerin showed them Badger. Instantly their hearts softened to Badger. Nar told Ferin to carry the little one till they reached the camp.
At the camp, Badger who was still sleeping, Farin and Frerin wrapped Badger in an old cloak they carried and set her by the fire. From the warmth of the cloak and the fire and the gently murmur of voice, Badger opened an eye and saw the dwarves. Badger sat up in a start. The dwarves jumped in surprise. Nar spoke to Badger, greeting her in the common tongue and Nar explained how they found Badger and where they came from. After Nar finished, he asked Badger why she, a child, would be on the banks of the Brandywine with no family or settlement near by. Badger began to cry hard. She realized where she was, what had happened and the outcome of what had happened. The dwarves just stared at Badger than accused of Nar of upsetting and scarring the little one.
Badger nodded. She told them that her mother and her were dumped into the Brandywine River. Nar asked if Badger was hungry. Badger nodded. After a quick supper, the dwarves held a small counsel between the five of them. Borin said they should take the hobbit back to her homeland and let her relatives deal with her. Frerin and Nar said they didnt have enough supplies to go north than west again with out running out. Borin suggested he take the hobbit back to her home while the rest continue on. Nar said no and that he was needed when they reached Ered Luin. Borin did not like the idea of taking the hobbit away from her family and making her live with them, even if was orphaned. Borin brought up the point that the hobbit still had family, a father, back in her homeland. Nar dismissed this idea. Nar said that they found Badger and they had the right to keep her. Finally, seeing that he wasnt going to get anywhere, Borin agreed to keep the hobbit, but asked what they were going to tell her when they said they were going to keep her. Nar said they would lie and say that her family wanted her safe and they would keep her safe. Borin shook his head but agreed.
Nar explained the situation to Badger who was still slightly confused, having never met or seen a dwarf before and being in new surroundings. Nar explained that they knew her family would want Badger safe, so they were going to honor her familys wishes and keep her safe by taking her back to the Ered Luin caves, where they lived. Badger smiled and asked if they were going on an adventure like Bilbo Baggins. Nar nodded in agreement. Badger asked if there was anything she could do to help. Nar said not till morning when they would travel the rest of the way to Ered Luin.
Badger slept the night away and was awakened by Gror. They had a simple breakfast and Badger asked when they would be stopping next. Borin told her they would only stop when they arrived at the caves. Badger bit her lip and didnt ask anymore questions. The day passed as did the scenery. The land went from green and hilly to grays and blues and very rocky. The day passed slowly, but after the sun went down and just as the stars began to peak out of the night time sky, they reached the mountains of Ered Luin. Badger had been mesmerized since they first saw them looming in the distance as a dark midnight blue but grew a couple of shades lighter as they drew nearer. Badger made the comment that they were beautiful. Gror laughed and agreed with Badger. The night grew darker and Nar still continued to walk up the mountain. Badger asked when they would going to sop, no on answered her, for they were tired and only wanted to getting their cave. Badger taking a hint didnt ask anymore questions.
Near midnight, Nar finally called up to two dwarves standing near a smooth plane on the mountain. The first dwarf hailed them and asked why they were gone longer than they said. Nar answered by telling the new dwarves about Badger. The dwarves stared in surprise and wonder. Why would a dwarf talk a hobbit the second dwarf asked? Borin told them he asked the same question. Nar waited till Badger was next to him, letting the other dwarves enter first. He told Badger that they were about to enter her new home. Badger smiled and opened her mouth to ask a question, but Nar sopped her and told her that he would answer her questions in the morning. Nar smiled and lightly guided Badger into the caves.
Badgers eyes focused quickly and Badger saw a smooth floored hall, and the walls were rough with gems. Badger recognized the clear quartz, but there was a deep blue gem that sparked in the firelight with the quartz. Nar ushered Badger along down the sloping hall. The hall turned into three passage ways. Nar guided Badger down the left passage. Nar said that Frerin would take Badger on a tour tomorrow. Nar walked with badger down the left passage until they reached a door about half way down the torch lit passage. Nar opened the wooden doors and let Badger walk through. Badger saw from the torch light that the room she was in was a bedroom. A small straw mattress lay upon a raised block of stone to the right and a table and chairs were to the left. At the end of the bed was a chest for clothes. Nar told Badger this would be her room for now.
Te next morning a dwarf came in and told Badger to wake up and get ready for breakfast. Badger was up and ready within 10 minutes, in the same clothes she was found in. The dwarf looked at Badger with disapproval. The dwarf told Badger to call her Kilia. Badger stopped and tried not to stare. Before Kilia could see Badgers reaction, Badger smiled. Badger almost went into shock because before her stood a dwarf woman! She looked a lot like Nar but with no beard.
Kilia lead Badger into the left passage again and back to the hall that had the three passages. Kilia explained that the left passage was for sleeping and resting. The right passage was for eating and entertaining. Finally the middle passage was for the work the dwarves did. Kilia walked with Badger down the right passage way until they reached the last door. Beyond the door was the dinning hall. A high ceiling was supported by five pillars inscribed with dwarf ruins. In the idle of the hall was a long table. Badger recognized Nar, Borin, Gror, Frerin and Farin and the two guards, but there were three other dwarves that Badger did not recognize. Kilia brought Badger to the table and a plate was put in front of Badger. From there Nar explained what he and his friends do. Nar said they make tools and help out the newly established dwarf colony in Moria. When Badger gave a look of confusion, Nar explained that Moria was a great dwarf mine that had been deserted, but now, Balin son of Fundin, was trying to set up a colony again. Badger nodded and Nar continued saying they made tools and other useful items the dwarves in Moria needed. Badger asked why the Moria dwarves didnt make the tools and items for themselves. Nar didnt know why but continued saying they traveled to Moria a lot during the year transporting items they made for them and taking items in return for their labor. Nar asked Badger if she would want to join them when they went to Moria next. Badger agreed and smiled. Badger asked what they were making for the dwarves in Moria. Nar didnt answer, but Gror did. He said it was nothing for Badger to worry about. Frerin and Borin exchanged glances but continued to eat.
After breakfast, Frerin took Badger on a tour of the caves. The right passage way was filled with rooms to entertain many people, doorways connecting rooms were always open. There were few benches and a rare chair was placed here or there. Tables meant for food, as Frerin said, were put in every room. Skipping the middle passage way, Frerin showed Badger the left passage way. All the bedrooms looked the same. Badger asked why and Frerin said that dwarves never spent much time in their bedrooms. Frerin said they were only used for sleeping. As they walked back into the main hall, Badger asked why they didnt go down the middle passage. Frerin said it was no place for a hobbit. Badger sighed and told Frerin that she would find a way in theer. Frerin stopped and told Badger that all the rooms in the middle passage were for records, their mines and working areas. Badger and Frerin had a staring contest. In the end Badger believed Frerin and asked if she could go out and play. Frerin abruptly said no. Badger asked why. Frerin said that for a long time orcs had prowled the southern area around Ered Luin. Badger not knowing how dangerous an orc cold be said that she would quiet and not get caught. Frerin laughed and said he would ask if one of the guards could watch over her while she played. Badger smiled and thanked Frerin.
So life passed on for three months, in that fashion. A guard would watch Badger as she played out in the sunlight, while the dwarves worked non stop. Nar would ask Badger the same questions at dinner; how was you day? What did you do? Are you happy? Badger always answered happily. One day, Borin came to Badger in the main hall, where Badger liked to sit and relax, and gave her an axe. He asked Badger what a dwarf or hobbit would do with an axe. Badger said to cut down trees, but not too many trees because than there wouldnt be enough to make the woods and forests. Boring grumbled and muttered something about sounding like an elf. Borin said no and told Badger that an axe was a means of protection.. Badger nodded and asked Borin if he was going to teach her how to use an axe. Borin said yes and handed Badger a smaller scaled axe. Borin told Badger that the axe was for Nars son. Badger asked where Nars son was. Borin told Badger that Nars wife died before they could raise a child. Badger felt sad but Borin raised her chin and told her that she was Nars child now, to all of them, she was their child and as their child she should know how to protect herself. Badger smiled and asked what to do first.
After a few weeks of practicing, bumps, bruises and the occasional cut, Badger gained the skill of the axe. Nar was very happy and impressed to find this out. He made the announcement on Badgers four month anniversary that in a month they would be heading to Moria.

The History of Gem Brown
To Moria
Nar was true to his word, a month passed. Badger could hardly control her excitement. The month passed quickly with the dwarves teach her new techniques with the axe and all the packing that was happening, filled up the days. The farewell dinner was entirely to short for Badger. From the little experienced Badger had with traveling, she knew there was food galore and plenty of drink being passed around. For the dwarves, little talk was done but a song with musical instruments played much to Badgers delight, by her second family, the dwarves.
Concerning Badgers first family, her hobbit family, as she would say, Badger thought of Standelf, her family and friends many times, but rarely missed them. Badger thought of them before she fell asleep every night. Badger asked the dwarves if they were going to visit the Shire or her family. The dwarves wouldnt answer Badger no but, they wouldnt answer yes either. The dwarves told Badger that her hobbit family was happy to know that she was safe with the dwarves and that they didnt expect Badger to come back, but to stay with the dwarves where she was safe. After a while, Badger finally agreed with the dwarves and stopped asking about going to see her hobbit family.
Busy days came and went and Badger loved being with the dwarves. They would tell tales from the Lonely Mountain and sing songs of old dwarves. These things plus regular activities kept thoughts of the Shire out of Badgers head, much to the dwarves happiness.
The dinner was silent, one thing Badger had never liked or witnessed. Looking around the table there were plates with only six helpings. Badger asked why there were only six helpings when she herself could eat three. Gror answered saying it was a custom for them to eat little before a journey, to prepare the body. Badger a little confused and miffed, ate one helping of the roasted meat. Badger was sent off to bed, another difference from regular life in Ered Luin. Borin walked Badger to her room. Badger asked why she was being sent to her room so soon. Borin told her they were going to sing in their native language. Badger asked why she wasnt allowed. Borin told her no on, not even her, would hear the language of the dwarves. Borin, not wanting to hear Badgers pleas too let her hear the songs shut Badgers door.
Badger stuck her tongue out at the closed door. Badger walked around her room, looked at the lit torhces, looked up the sun shaft, which brought in sunlight and at the moment, moonlight into the rooms in the caves, and finally laid down on her bed. Humming a song of her one, Badger fell asleep remembering the night she last saw her Aunt Estella, Opal and Merry Brandybuck.
Badger awoke when Frerin yelled good morning into Badgers ear. Badger shot up in bed and Frerin laughed to the point that tears were streaming down his face. Frerin finally calmed down, told Badger she better get up and head to the dining room for a quick breakfast. Badger yawned and did as Frerin said.
Setting out following Nar and Farin, Badger saw it was no where near dawn. Borin, who was right behind Badger asked if she had slept well. Badger smiled and thanked Borin. Borin smiled but looked a head at Nar, who was watching the scene. Nar quickly turned and started to walk down the mountain.
After the first day of traveling, the group stopped near the Brandywine River. There a disagreement between Borin and Nar, but Farin and Frerin led Badger away before Badger could hear more than, The Shire is only a days journey
Since they were near the Brandywine River, Badger asked if they were going to the Shire first. Badger didnt give much time for either Farin or Frerin to speak and when right on into saying she wanted to see her family again. Farin nodded and told Badger he was going to get some cram. Badger fell asleep telling Frerin about the stars her friend, Marigold, told her about. Frerin stood over Badger and sadness washed over him. Farn found him like that a couple minutes later. Farin asked what was wrong, Frerin said that Badger had another life that they were keeping her from. Farin told Frerin that Nar wouldnt let any dwarf take Badger away. Nar said he would not lose another family. Frerin sighed and told Farin that they might make Badgers life with them a happy one. Farin nodded and picked up Bager and brought her to the fire, where Nar and Borin were glaring at each other over the fire.
The next day, again before dawn, Farin awakened Badger and they sat around the burnt out fire, eating cram. The dwarves followed by Badger quickly made their way to Moria. The seasons changed from summer to fall as they journeyed. Badger enjoyed watching the colors come alive in the landscape. The landscape itself was changing from the Mountains of Ered Luin to the rolling hills and valleys that kept the rivers. A month passed and the Misty Mountains came into view slowly. Gror told Bager of the lands between Ered Luin and Moria. Gror also told of the wealth of Moria and the history of the Lonely Mountain. Each night, the dwarves would tell Badger a story of the dwarves. As the Misty Mountains drew near, Badger became weary and slow, but the dwarves pressed on. Within thirty two days, the dwarves and Badger made it to the Doors of Moria. Badger had used Borin as a walking pillow, was now laying on the ground sleeping, while the dwarves waited for the moon. Borin nudged Badger awake, when Badger was fully awake, she heard Nar utter a word, Badger only recognized as a fruit. Borin following Gror with Badger walked through the doors of Moria.
Torches lit the small hall they were now in. Ruins of dwarves were written in the door they had passed through. Badger looked up as three dwarves came down te stairs. Two dwarves came up to Frerin and Farin, who had carried the items for the Moria dwarves on the journey. The third welcomed them to Moria. Nar called Badger to him, Borin pushed Badger, to awaken her, again. Badger walked to Nar and smiled and asked when they would be sitting down for a decent meal. Nar laughed and introduced Balin, son of Fudin. Balin bowed low and welcomed Badger to Moria. Badger bowed and said she was at his service. Balin smiled and said Badger remined him of his good friend, Bilbo Baggins. That name brought Badger out ofher sleepiness and she asked Balin how the knew Mr. Baggins and asked if he was scared when the trolls were going to eat him, or what was it like in Mirkwood and what was it like seeing a real dragon. Balin asked if Badger had heard the stories of Bilbo and the Lonely Mountian. Badger nodded her head eagerly. Balin smiled, he explained that he was one of the thirteen dwarves who came to see the famous burglar, Bilbo Baggins. Badger began asking more questions than before but Nar quieted Badger. Nar asked if Badger could be shown a room. Balin agreed with Nar saying that there was much to discuss with the trading to Gondor and the dealings within Moria.
Badger was led up a set of stars and noticed the dwarf, named Foli, had two axes and was keeping a quick eye on the shadows. The room Badger was led into was a lot like her room in Ered Luin, a bed, a table, a chair and a desk. Badger turned to than Floi, but he had shut the door, but a second later he opened the door and told Badger to barr the door. Badger asked why and Floi said one word, orcs, before he shut the door again. He called through the door for Badger to do as he bid. Badger, confused and rather scared, did as Floi said and went directly to bed.
--- ...But long ago he rode away,
and where he dwelleth none can say;
for into darkness fell his star
in Mordor where the shadows are.
