Mush's History
Okay. Yeah. Here you go, finally.
The History of Mush
As it is written, in the first and second millenniums of the 3rd Age of Middle Earth, the Dunedain faced great opposition from their enemies throughout the East. In 1940 of the 3rd Age, an alliance was formed once again between Gondor and the Northern Realm of Arnor *(see foot notes). In that same year, Arvedui the heir of the crown of Arnor wedded Firiel, daughter of Ondoher, who was King of Gondor. They were married in the White City of Arthedain, the sister city of Minas Tirith at that time. Before two years passed they had two twin sons, the elder Arvedui named Aranath, and the younger was named Anrion, after the younger son of Elendil. In 1944 Ondoher King of Gondor and his two sons, Artamir and Faramir, perished in battle against the great foes of Gondor.
At this time Arvedui claimed the crown of Gondor. Arvedui was the direct descendant of Isildur, and the husband of the Firiel, the only remaining child of Ondoher. His claim was rejected. The Steward of Gondor replied that only heirs of Anrion, and not Isildur his older brother, could claim kingship, as it is according to the histories of Gondor. Arvedui attempted once more to finally unite the two kingdoms, but his efforts were ignored. As he could see the Northern Realm was fading, he let it go. Gondors crown was awarded to Earnil, the Captain of Gondor and the hero of the recent war. Still, Arvedui did not forget his rightful kingship, and as it is written, yet the claim was never forgotten by his descendants even when their kingship had passed away. For the time was now drawing near when the North Kingdom would come to an end.
In just 20 years, Arnor and the city of Arthedain was defeated by the Witch-King of Angmar, who would later take form as the Dark Lord Sauron. In 1975 Arvedui was slain, and though Gondor sent their forces to assist Arnor, the Northern Land became known as the Lost Realm. When Arnor fell, Aranarth Arveduis first-born son was taken to Rivendell, but Anrion Aranarths twin brother escaped to Harlindon, south of the Grey Havens. Legend had it that the heirlooms of the house of Arnor were given to Elrond in Rivendell for safekeeping.
After the fall, only a remnant of the people of Arnor remained. Twenty of the entire population escaped death from the Witch-King, and in that small number were Eriador and his wife. They settled, unnoticed, in Harlindon, caught between the Ered Luin (Blue Mountains) and the Western Sea.
* * * * *
Mush of Arthedain was born in the year 2968 of the 3rd Age. She grew up in Harlindon, the southern part of the beautiful land of Lindon, which was founded by the High Elves of Middle Earth, in the old years when the Grey Havens were first built.
Mush was the direct descendant of Anrion son of Arvedui. The people of Arnor, who had now for over one thousand years been the people of Harlindon, lived abnormally long lives, as they were more direct descendants of the Dunedain than other men. Also, over the centuries a few of the sons and daughters of Arnor had married the elves and half elves of Lindon. This was uncommon, but not unheard of in those days. Mush didnt have much elf blood in her, but her paternal great grandmother had been a half elf. This didnt account too much, her mother would admit, but Mush had some of the grace and beauty of her far off elf kin, and like the elves she longed eternally for the sea.
Mush was not the first born in her family. Unlike most of her Company friends, she was not an orphan. Her father was given the title of High King of Arnor, as none in Harlindon knew that the heirs of Aranarth lived and no one, not even Mithrandir, told them otherwise. As the people were left to themselves, Mushs royal family lived just as the others. They no longer felt the need to consider their kingship, and even as the last remaining remnant of the Northern Land, they were not interested in achieving glory or fame. Lost in their own world, they lived in perfect harmony with they High Elves to the North and the fairy tale-like Hobbitfolk to the East and South.
Mushs older sister, Adelheid**, was the heir to the throne of Arnor, but Mush also had a twin sister, Gavroche, and a younger brother, Gwynedd. (Her parents, ah, rather went for original names. ) Her mother was Ariadenne daughter of Ariadon, her father Arnuidan son of Argudel.
She grew up running free in the wild foothills of the Ered Luin. By birth a child of the mountains, nothing gave her greater pleasure than to climb to some peak or mountaintop. In the autumn, she was given to walk through the newly snowy banks of the nearby hills and just smell the mountains, the crisply cold air, the fresh snow, the pine trees around her. As children, Mush and her brothers and sisters would race their horses across the wildflower-filled meadows and valleys. Because of their elfin ancestry, they loved the sea, and luckily their home in Harlindon was close to it. In the summers Mush would go sailing almost everyday in the Gulf of Lune. And in the evenings, when her people had outside and slept out of doors, she would join them, and drink in the beauty of the fading twilit nights. On the occasions when elves were there, they taught her to stargaze, telling her the old tales and legends that had been passed down among both elves and men for generations past.
Ariadenne her mother was a wonderful storyteller. As small children growing up and then later as young adolescents, Ariadenne would tell them the old stories of Arnor and Gondor and other tales of Middle Earth. But Ariadennes knowledge did not stop in Middle Earth. She told them of far off lands that neither she nor her people had yet seen, but whose tales had been passed down through the first of the Dunedain. Because of her, Adelheid, Gavroche, Mush and Gwynedd knew of Narnia, and Prydain, and Westmark, and even galaxies far away. ( ) Stranger even than these was the world that existed beyond the reaches of their imaginations, which their mother simply called Earth. Instead of reaching in the past they seemed to be reaching in the future. When they learned to read, the children ventured off into the places theyre mother had told them of. In books they first met the people they would later become good friends with.
These stories were known among all the people of Harlindon they werent exclusive to Mushs family. The land of Harlindon was set apart and no longer involved in the activities of Middle Earth, but they had a strong interest in the histories and legends of the worlds they lived with. The elves had a strong influence in their culture and their interests.
In those days, Mithrandir visited the elves of the Grey Havens, and so he also came to the people of Harlindon. Mush had known him since she was very young, and she and her sisters and brother were very close to him. Mithrandir kept them aware of what Middle Earth was dealing with during the end of the 3rd Age, but Mush was only concerned with those events as she got older.
The most significant gift Mithrandir gave them was their ability to travel. Little is known about the delicate balance between Middle Earth and its neighboring lands, but the summer Mush was nine years old, she and her siblings first visited Narnia. In much the same way the Company later traveled during their adventures, Mush moved between these alternate realities. Throughout her childhood and young adulthood, she journeyed to Narnia, Prydain, Westmark, and many places throughout Earth. She made many friends she would later spend more time with, including a few of the people in the Company today. When she was 10 she met Laurie Laurence, and he became her best childhood friend, outside her siblings. He came to Harlindon a few times while they were growing up, and they, along with her brother and sisters, journeyed together.
Mush was an adventurer, known among the people of Harlindon for being a bit of an imp and a little rash. She loved her home and her people. Even as a child she felt the injustice of Arveduis lost claim of kingship. She, and Arnor as a whole, were not bitter about this point, but simply longed to reestablish Arnor as the Northern Realm. However, the people and the king of Harlindon didnt want to restore the kingdom in the times of trouble. Mush knew it was rather a lost quest, but she continued to search for a way to regain her countrys old honor and prestige.
* Northern Realm of Arnor - I just had to note this its very fun, because in the beginning of writing my history Arveduis story caught my eye, and after I started writing it I looked to see where he was from, to find he was the King of Arnor. Whats funny is that the house I grew up in was called the Arnor house because the people that had lived there before and built it were the Arnors. Cool, no?
**Adelheid - (amusing, for me ) my real older sisters name is Heidi.
So yeah. Sorry if this was too boring the story starts after all of this. Jus' a little background.
