Journey to Gondor
Journey to Gondor
~Lonewinds Homestead, The Eastfold, Rohan
Night lay heavy upon the wild plains of the Horselords, veiling from sight the playful breeze meandering through the tall, ruffled grasses and skimming over treeless stretches of land cut with winding waterways.
Scarcely within sight of the extensive forests of fir that blanketed the great mountains to the South, a homestead sprawled across a flat tract of land in the Eastfold. It stood proudly like a dark island lost in a barren sea of endless green. There was nothing but silence in the fresh, cool air of the starlit, autumn night, and over this solitary house hung only a peaceful hush; yet where all were presumed asleep and lost to dreams in their beds, at one window there was a glow of yellow that pierced into the deep of the night.
The light burned steadily on into the darkness of the early hours, casting strange and fanciful apparitions upon the walls, then sending them fleeing to hide in shadowy corners. The lady named Thea sat quietly at her table, humming soft notes of the fireside song played earlier that night as she wove her needle through the garment resting on her knee. Thoughts ran through her mind as she worked, the bright faces and happy laughter of her friends appeared once again to her, and the tear-stained cheeks of children as she had hugged them goodnight.
The hall had indeed been merry and joyful that eve, yet also tinged with sadness, for she was leaving them all with the coming of the day - these friends who had given shelter when she had been alone - leaving for a new life far off in a strange country almost unknown to her. Her eyes unconsciously sought the window above her bed, as they often did, and as she looked out into the sleeping world beyond she was reassured once more as her heart spoke it was the right road, and one she must take.
Eventually the candle was extinguished and an uneasy sleep pervaded the room for several short hours. Beyond the walls the vast plains ran rippling away for miles in every direction. They were bereft of any sign of life: bird, man or beast; save only the lonely mournful call of a hidden wolf or roosting owl.
Gradually the darkness waived to the approach of morning, and the sky was slowly shot through with softer greys. In her chamber, Thea opened her eyes and groggily stuck out her head from under the fur-laden covers. The room was still dark, but the bare furniture could be made out somewhat through the gloom. All thought of further sleep discarded, she left her cot and dressed herself hurriedly in the dark.
Carefully shading a taper with a cupped hand, she lit the candle on the table once more. She wore a plain woolen dress of soft navy, free of much detail save the long, graceful sleeves worn throughout Rohan at that time. Her chestnut hair fell down her back in shiny tousled waves, a few pins at the temple the only attempt to manage it. Her blue-grey eyes were lit with an excitement never illuminated before as she crossed the room and flung open the chest at the bottom of the bed.
Within the hour she had a knotted shawl filled with clothes and belongings ready, and a cloak of dark forest green about her shoulders. The candle had burned low and was extinguished, but the day was dawning now and the room fairly light. Thea did not notice, instead she got to her knees and vanished from view under the bed, reappearing a moment later with a long, worn leather box clutched tightly in her hands. She sat now in ease upon the covers with it beside her and gently opened it. First appeared a sleek knife, which she quickly hid in a boot beneath her skirts. Next, both hands reached out and a long scabbard appeared, blood red and decorated with golden emblems of the horse. She rested it heavily upon her lap, then deliberately drew out the blade with a clear steel ring.
Holding it up before her, her face became loving and rapt as she accustomed her fingers to a grip long neglected and almost forgotten. The blade suddenly glinted brightly as the first light of day fell through the window, and a determined smile suddenly broke upon her face.

Re: Journey to Gondor
Thanks guys! It's going to be more like a road trip to Gondor than a proper history - I wanted to write something short just to have some fun with Thea's character. Well that's the idea anyway, she might end up being completely dull.
