Re: History of Asenath Lhundelor
The History of Asenath Lhundelor Part 7
Evening came and the three Elves finally came to the thickening woods that led into Neverwinter. Had Asenath known the hidden path that Haldir took, she would have arrived at Caras Abriel much sooner. All the while, Haldir walked many paces ahead of them, and Asenath noticed he carried behind his bow, an object on his back, wrapped in folds of cloth. But it drew little interest from the two, and at the crossing paths of Neverwinter and the flower glade of Nierninwa, he left them to meet with Lord Elestar.
Arriving home, Asenath was met with both Selmathin and her grandmother Velindelor. They were overjoyed when Asenath presented them with her gold arrow, and Selmathin continually embraced her. Most impressed was Velindelor, who drew Asenath inside and they sat down. She asked her to tell them about the tournament, so Asenath started from the beginning. But she began many times over, always finding a better way to tell it. She told them about the celebration afterward, and Umae was quick to insert any details of Elidye left aside.
Selmathin brought them honeycomb, and strawberry halves with tea, Asenath's favorite.
There she continued to tell her grandmother about the excursion, and the delightful time she and Umae had spent at Lord Maranwe's house. Unlike Asenath, Velindelor had extremely long hair, frost white and flowing. Her eyes were so light, they appeared like a pair of crystals, and her skin was smooth and fair. She did not share the close resemblance that Selmathin and Asenath did, but her sister, of who tale will tell, was likened to her. Among Elves, Velindelor was held in great regard, and the time of her presence in Middle-Earth was undeterminable, at least to Asenath.
Then, to Asenath and Umae's excitement, came the part of Haldir by the stream. However, Asenath told it with great seriousness. He was, after all, a Guardian of the Galadhrim. Selmathin was both surprised and delighted, and Velindelor, only a short while later left to greet him.
After finishing their food and tea, Asenath and Umae set off to find Vyne. It was now nightfall, and they walked the short path to Vyne's house, which was highest in the trees. The balcony of her room was open to the moon and stars, and usually, when an Elf was heard singing, far up in the night, it was Vyne.
"Vyne, are you home?" called Asenath, even as they walked up the last steps.
"Come inside, Umae!"
"Asenath enters!" smiled Asenath, "but Umae is with me." she said.
"Asenath! I thought you would have stayed in Caras Abriel with Meneldor for a few days more!" Vyne exclaimed, appearing in the doorway. She threw her arms around Asenath, thoroughly surprised.
"Why would I do that?" laughed Asenath. Did everyone know something about Meneldor that she did not? "I have something to show you." she smiled anyway.
Vyne's eyes fell on the gold arrow that Asenath brought around from behind her back, and she took it quietly. "A...gold arrow?..."
Asenath beamed, but Vyne only stared at it.
"Asenath won, Vyne!" burst Umae.
"The archery contest? Asenath!" Vyne's face lit up. "Why didn't you say so in the first place? Oh, congratulations!" she hugged Asenath, handing the arrow back to her.
"Thank you Vyne, can we come in for a while?" asked Asenath.
"Certainly, come inside. Honestly, Asenath, I did not know you were that skilled with your bow. I knew you would do well, but win? I am so happy for you." she said, walking with them up the stairs.
Umae began to gush about Elidye, and they talked about Haldir, and why he had come with them to Neverwinter. Vyne supposed he had come to visit Selmathin out of his care for her. Asenath rejected the idea. Haldir had never visited her mother before. But Vyne was much older than Asenath, and knew well before Asenath's time that they had become friends somehow.
The three retreated to the topmost room, illuminated by the moonlight coming in through the balcony doorway. There were cushions to sit on, and small lamps around the room. Umae and Asenath sat on the cushions, while Vyne laid down on her bed.
"Asenath wins the archery contest, Umae has won Elidye's heart, I could not be more satisfied." sighed Vyne.
"I am not too sure about that." said Umae shyly. "About Elidye."
Vyne's eyes flew to Umae. "Well, I am sure." she said confidently. "I will talk with your mother tomorrow, we must start planning a wedding..."
Asenath laughed.
Umae smiled, reveled in the thought, then shook her head. "No, my mother is with my aunt at the berry festival. I was supposed to go there, as soon as we arrived back. But I wanted to see you Vyne."
"The berry festival? You must leave me again? Are you going with her, Asenath?" asked Vyne.
"I wanted to see the Ehtele's, if I am not busy tomorrow. I had planned to go with Umae on the way back." answered Asenath.
"Why don't you join us?" Umae asked Vyne.
"I would, but I already told my mother I would help her bake for a special dinner she is having at her cousin's home tomorrow evening." answered Vyne.
"We will bring you a basket of berries to take!" said Umae happily.
"Thank you, Umae." smiled Vyne. "I do hope one day Elidye can manage to store in him all of your berries..."
The happiness on Umae's face was disposed of. "Elidye loves berries! ...Doesn't he?"
"That he does." reassured Asenath. "Vyne was only teasing." she shot a look at her.
"Oh, of course I am. I am not bitter that you two shall be at the Ehtele berry festival tomorrow, having a delightful time while I bake." said Vyne, turning on her side away from them.
"You are so dramatic, Vyne." laughed Asenath.
"Ah, at least I am not a Haldir worshipper." returned Vyne.
"What did you say?" stared Asenath, appearing offended.
"Yes, you worship Haldir because he is a Guardian." laughed Vyne, sitting up.
"There is nothing wrong with admiring Haldir, Vyne." said Umae. "Maybe she enjoys his ability to hunt, or what have you. You know Asenath, always wanting to go on wild adventures." she laughed.
"Hunt? Wild? Is that what you think I want? To hunt? To be wild? Well, I don't. I want to go--but, you don't understand. Neither of you." said Asenath.
"I was only teasing about Haldir." answered Vyne, she and Umae appearing shocked.
"I do not tease you about your music, Vyne. Nor do I tease Umae about her berry baking! I will leave now, I must polish my bow you see." snapped Asenath, she rose and left.
"Asenath! Please come back, now you are the one being dramatic!" called Vyne.
"Asenath, will you still go to the berry festival tomorrow?" called Umae.

Re: History of Asenath Lhundelor
The history of Asenath Lhundelor Part 8
Asenath headed home, she did not know what had come over her, or why she had become so upset with Vyne and Umae. She walked the quiet forest, and passed the House of Elestar, going aloft to her tree. When she came to her bedroom crossing, she heard voices. She walked into the room next to her mother's chamber, and saw Selmathin speaking with Haldir. Asenath noticed that she held something that was wrapped in her arms. And, recalling it from memory, it was the thing that Haldir had on his back as they traveled to Neverwinter. Tears were in Selmathin's eyes as she looked away, and Haldir placed his hand gently on her arm, speaking softly to her.
Asenath backed quietly from the doorway, and she seated herself in a nearby chair, gazing sadly at the floor, and not knowing why. She never saw her mother cry, maybe. It was not long before she heard a voice beside her.
"Asenath."
She lift her to meet Haldir's eyes. "Yes?"
"I shall see you in the morning at your grandfather's council." he said. "Farewell." he bowed.
"Farewell." said Asenath, rising to her feet even as he walked silently from her home. Had he failed to tell her something? Questions clouded her head. She walked back to where her mother stood, still holding the cloth wrap, gazing as though she had expected Asenath to come in.
"Mother?...What has happened? Are you troubled?" Asenath asked quietly.
Selmathin did not hide her tears, but smiled through them. "Asenath, I want to talk with you. Come, we will go to my chamber, there we will sit and talk." she said.
Asenath followed her mother, and they went into the dimly lit room, and sat on the edge of Selmathin's bed. Asenath never took her eyes off of her mother, and Selmathin never set aside the wrapped thing in her arms, awkward as it was to hold. "I am going to tell you a story that you should know. You know much about your father, yes. But you do not know all." she said, growing silent, and closing her eyes.
Asenath sat still a moment, then reached over and gently moved her mother's hair behind her shoulder, wiping a tear away from Selmathin's cheek. "Tell me...will you tell me?"
Selmathin was quiet for what seemed the longest time to Asenath, but then she lifted her head, and looked at her daughter. "There is much I haven't told you, that has been left for me to tell. And while you must know everything, it has been too painful for me to share these things. I am going to tell you the story of our family, and I am going to tell you about Celeth."
Asenath's face filled with wonder, her mother had always called him 'your father'. She enjoyed hearing his name spoken. "Please..." was all Asenath could say.
"Listen, listen very closely Asenath. I am going to tell you our history. Long ago, with the three kindreds of the Eldar, your grandmother Velindelor, then called Velinmali, journeyed with her kin from Cuivienen to Valinor. Though, a number from the clan Teleri, including your grandfather Elestar, parted from the two other kindreds, Noldor and Vanyar, and came to the Gulf of Forochel to the west. At the dawning of the First Age, Velindelor departed from Valinor, and with the Noldor, came to the Western Sea with her sister Alynath, and with Nerwen (who would be known as Galadriel), and was reunited with Elestar.
"They traveled to the woodlands near the Celebrant river, and settled there, living in the trees of Laurelindrenan, while some of our kin moved east in Greenwood the Great. We are the Silvan Elves, decedent from the clan of Teleri. And after Amdir was named king of Lorien, your grandmother and grandfather were wedded.
During the Second Age, the Dark Lord was gaining power to the east, Asenath. He set out for Mirkwood, and with his battles drove the Elves of Mirkwood back, and caused many of Lorien's Elves to flee.
"Sadly king Amdir was slain in battle, and it was a devastating time for our people. But, it was in this time that Velindelor and Elestar, along with Velindelor's sister Alynath, led a small number of families deep into Lorien, and they protected them in a secret place in the Woods called Neverwinter, known then as Silmatuaria. With them, they brought the families of Nyatar, Laurdunya, Megaltura, Thalon, Ortelume, Elanesse, and Lithaglar. As war marched in from the east, Alynath went to the flower glade of Nierninwa, where the star Nierninwa shines into our forest. There she prayed to the Valar a desperate prayer, for the people were shielded only by the thickness of the forest, and they were afraid.
"That night, a soft rain came over Neverwinter, which made the forest grow strange and beautiful. Eight of the trees grew tall and strong, and their roots grew up from the ground, so large that the Elves were able to walk underneath. Elestar would build his House in and around the base of the Tree of Laive, the only tree where the residue of the Valar's rain flows within as a sweet nectar. So it has always been when the rain comes, the Tree of Laive's leaves drip like honey. It is this ointment that Velindelor uses as she heals, and it is this ointment that gives power to anything containing it.
"The eight trees that grew tall were to become the homes of Neverwinter, one for each family. During that time, the rain that had come to Neverwinter, caused a mist to veil it from invaders, and the forest was not found, as though it did not exist. Shortly after, I was born, and was named Selmathin by my father Elestar. And he had given Alynath the name of Alynath Lhundelor (Lhundelor meaning nightsky), for she had prayed to the night sky, and the Valar answered.
"Beyond Lorien, Amroth, son of king Amdir, had died. After the war of the Last Alliance, of Men and Elves, Mordor was invaded, and the Dark Lord was defeated. The Third Age began, and Lord Celeborn and Lady Galadriel became the rulers of Lorien. Alynath chose to return to Valinor, and Velindelor kept her sister's name of Lhundelor as her own, and in honor of her prayer, Lhundelor became the name of Elestar's House.
While Caras Galadhon flourished, Elestar and Velindelor inherited Neverwinter as their permanent home. And Lord Maranwe and Lady Rilma inherited a piece of forest in northeast Lorien, where they had taken many Silvan Elves in the turmoil of Mirkwood. Elestar established the House of Lhundelor, and for the Swanhaven of the Teleri, and the leaves of the Tree of Laive, he made our family crest swan upon two leaves.
"I grew up in Neverwinter, and the families that had come with us grew as well. The Elvenhomes expanded to smaller trees, bridged together one way or another. The family of Vyne Nyatar built great halls of music in the heights of Neverwinter, for they lived in the highest tree, and there they played silver harps, composing beautiful music. The family of Ortelume grew fruit trees and gardens, and the family of Seflore Megaltura and Meneldor Lithaglar made long bows and fine daggers. The family of Elanesse and Laurdunya crafted jewelry and many beautiful things, and the family of Thalon weaved and sewed clothing and made elven boots. And our family, the House of Lhundelor, holds books by Lord Elestar on the histories of Lorien, and much more literature on lands beyond.
"The Third Age went on, and much of it was a peaceful time for Neverwinter. It remained very distinguished from the tree-city of Caras Galadhon, and of it's neighbors. Elves visit, but none move here. For it is known that it is a place blessed by the Valar, reserved for the families who survived in seclusion. And no one outside of Lothlorien knows of it's existence, Asenath. In the many years that followed, the evil in the East grew, inflicting terrible battles on the world of Men, Anorien and Ithilien, and Gondor was shaken. Men and Elves fought together, and The Necromancer drove the Elves back yet further, and battles erupted near our borders...
"A massive attack came over the plains of Rhovannion. Some of those who were driven back, traveled through the night, and made it alive to Lothlorien. Among them came the family of Ehtele, and Velindelor requested they be brought to Neverwinter for care. So the Ehtele's moved to Neverwinter, which caused much stir in Lorien, for no one had moved to Neverwinter since it's founding. And they grew berries and harvested them, and established the fruit festivals of Neverwinter. A swarm of injured soldiers also came to us, and my mother went to Caras Galadhon to aid in healing, the need was very great. I was watching the wounded being carried through the woods at the first light of dawn, and I felt helpless, and horrified. I then saw a Man, and as I could not distinguish the Men from the Elves they were so badly wounded, I knew he was one."
As Selmathin went along, noise burst through the trees. Elves rushed passed, commands were being made. She was urged to leave, but she stayed right where she was, wanting to see what was going on. She watched silently as the wounded were carried in, and then caught site of a Man, resting an arm against a tree, slumping. He staggered forward, his dark hair drenched with sweat, blood coming from his mouth and forehead, he fell to the ground. No one drew near, and Selmathin ran to him, catching him as best she could.
Blood smeared her clothes as she laid him in her lap.
She moved him to lay down on the ground, and kneeling next to him, leaning over him, she cupped his face. His eyes opened, and he saw the Elf speaking, but heard nothing. His eyes went dark, and they drifted shut.

Re: History of Asenath Lhundelor
The History of Asenath Lhundelor Part 9
"It was many days before I would see Celeth's eyes open again. And I took care of him. When I did see him awake for the first time, he told me he learned who I was from Athadel, one of the healers. Now that he knew who I was, I asked him where he had come from. He told me that he lived in the land of Anorien in Gondor, and was a soldier there. I rather liked his voice, and thought him quite odd and handsome. And for the first time, I wished to take someone to all my secret places, Asenath. I wanted to show the Man the stars, and the flowers, and sing to him, and adore him, and listen to him all day. But I composed myself in the presence of my Elf-kin, and my imaginings faded to a hidden place.
"Over the days that followed during his recovery, we stayed together in Caras Galadhon, and became friends. Good friends. Celeth did not know it, but I had hoped he would stay forever. Never had I known such joy, and I had no desire to return home to Neverwinter, so long as he stayed. He came often to find me, and gladly held my hand. We would walk together, and he would read to me from his journal. The dark world beyond my home frightened me, for I knew Celeth had seen these things with his own eyes. The beauty and wonder of my home awed Celeth, and he said it to be like a dream, and he was renewed within it. Yet, Celeth was soon able to return to where he had come to me from, and he felt his father needed him. I urged him not to go, and I knew the darkness would take him.
"He found me even as he departed to leave. He kissed me, and I was overwhelmed with love, something that had been hidden. I could not live without Celeth, but he left, and I would wait for him to come back to me. And one year later, Celeth secretly entered Lothlorien, and we met again, deeply in love.
That season we wedded, in Lightwind meadow under the stars of night.
My mother and father welcomed him, and we spent the next year together in peace. My father blessed us richly, and had our home built next to his House. Haldir became Celeth's close companion, having known him early on. But my dreams with Celeth were set aside, as he desired to band with the Elves. He learned their ways and became wonderfully skilled as an archer, and Haldir made him a Guardian, unheard of in all of Lothlorien, but he was accepted.
"On the day of our anniversary, my father presented him with the sword of the House of Lhundelor, forged by Elestar and the sons of Lithaglar, glorious and deadly. With the sword he defended the Woods, and fought alongside our kin, and left for far away battles. It was after this that I knew Celeth and I were going to have a child, which brought great joy to your grandmother. Celeth came for a brief stay, and he and I were able to be together only once as I was expecting you. As you grew inside me, Asenath, war approached Lorien, and some of the trees at our borders were being burned. Velindelor went to Caras Galadhon to meet with the other High Elves of Lorien, and she took me with her. Here I witnessed an amazing thing, as Galadriel called to the wind, and a heavy rainstorm fell on the Woods, consuming the fires of black magic that ate at the trees. And they came to life again by the power of the Ring of Celebrimbor and of Water, and our enemies fled.
"Morning came, and after the rain cleared, and the sun showered the Golden Wood, I gave birth to you, and your grandmother named you Asenath. We returned to Neverwinter, and a few weeks later we were blessed to have Celeth return, and he met you for the first time. Over the next 3 years, Asenath, the days of his visits were short spans of the greatest of happiness. And he loved you, and spoke with you about the land of Men. He sang to us, and read to you, on quiet nights beside your bed...and he loved us both, very much.
As Haldir and a legion of Elves made ready to set out once more, Elestar foresaw great danger in Celeth's future, and told him not to go... but this battle ravaged Anorien, and Celeth would not forsake his allegiance. On our last day together, Celeth went to Caras Galadhon, where he retrieved a foal he brought with him on his recent return to Lorien, placed under the care of Athadel, kept for your 3rd birthday. I remember how happy he was, and on that eve, he came to your bedroom, Asenath."
Celeth gently moved aside the silvery purple veil into Asenath's room, and finding a small empty bed, his eyes searched the room. "Asenath? Amin ai-alqua? [My little swan?]"
Suddenly a thud hit him, and he looked down. Asenath was mangled around his leg, and looking up at him, she giggled.
"Is this how you say hello?" he laughed, reaching down and scooping her up. Asenath pushed and squirmed to get down, giggling all the more. He set her down again, and she ran to her bed, knowing it was slumber time, she wanted to get to the story part.
Celeth gazed from across the room at her, then smiled. "Is it story time?"
Asenath nodded proudly. He always let her say 'the end', and she was very fond of her ability to do so. Celeth walked to her bedside, looking as though he were thinking of something. "I know, shall we have a talking time instead?" he asked, kneeling beside her as she hurried under her cover.
Asenath spread her little hands across the blanket, and thought it over. "What is that?"
"Well," began Celeth, "you tell me something, and we will talk about it." he said.
Asenath laid back, turning on her side to face him, cheek squished to pillow. "I want to say, I want to say that...you go to the fruit festival, when it comes tomorrow."
"I wish I could come with you and mommy tomorrow, Asenath. But your father has to leave the Woods for a while, I promise we will visit anywhere you want once I return." said Celeth, taking her hand in his as a promise.
Asenath nodded briefly. "I lost my sword!" she suddenly remembered, sitting straight up. How could she have forgotten to tell him?
"You did? Is that what you were sneaking around after when I came in?" asked Celeth.
Asenath scrambled out of her bed and ran to her desk, checking the one place she had not, in her top drawer. She pulled the drawer open and then stood on her tip toes, feeling around for her sword. She then lifted it out victoriously.
"There it is!" exclaimed Celeth, watching Asenath wave the little wooden sword around. "A noble and fierce Elf-maiden indeed!"
"Mommy hid up there!" she pointed to the drawer, giggling over her mother's unsuccessfulness.
Celeth chuckled, then pat the bed, were Asenath came bounding back and hopped up. "Asenath, I have a surprise for you. A gift for your birthday." he told her.
Asenath stopped jabbing her sword threateningly out the window, and whirled around to his face. "Daddy." she said, sounding very touched.
"I want you to go to sleep tonight, and in the morning, you go to your grandmother's home, and you ask her where your gift is." said Celeth, tucking her blanket back around her, he then smiled. "I brought it from a land far away, just for you. So in the morning you go and find it, do you understand?"
Asenath's mouth slowly fell open, her eyes grew wide. "Take to grandmother's house tonight please?"
"I'm afraid not Asenath, I will go walking with your mother before I leave, so you must go to sleep. And remember, when I come back we shall travel anywhere you like, and you will be enjoying your gift very much by then." Celeth told her.
"Will come back to see last days in the fruit festival?" Asenath asked, forgetting all about her gift, remembering that he was going away.
"Daddy will be away, but I should be home for the harvest festival." he said.
Asenath tried to think when the harvest festival was, then it occurred to her. "That is so long off, all the way after the summer time comes."
"It will be here before you realize, and if we are fortunate, I may come home sooner." said Celeth, kissing her on the forehead.
"Why walk away then stay home?" wondered Asenath.
"Do you feel safe when you are in the Woods with mommy and your kin, Asenath?" Celeth asked.
"I do!" said Asenath.
"That is why daddy must walk away rather than stay home. To keep bad things from coming near to you or mommy, or anyone else." explained Celeth.
Asenath frowned. "What is the bad things?"
"Anything that would harm you or mommy, but you needn't know about that." said Celeth, putting her at rest by stroking her cheek with his finger.
"I'll keep mommy safe too." she promised him, feeling around on her bed for her dropped sword.
"I know you will." smiled Celeth, handing it to her. "Good night Asenath, go to sleep now."
Asenath leaned over and placed her arms around his neck, and he kissed her cheek, burying his face in her small shoulder, putting his big arms around her. Asenath grew sleepy in his warm embrace, she yawned, and gently pat his back.
Celeth withdrew, and lifted her back to the center of her bed. This time Asenath wanted to go to sleep, her eyes were barely open, and she smiled drowsily at him.
"I love you." whispered Celeth. With that he rose up, and quietly walked from Asenath's room. Asenath slowly sat up, sleepily watching as his cape whirled around the corner, and his footsteps faded away. She curled up with her sword, and fell asleep.
"That morning you found your foal, the gift from your father, a horse of the Rohirrim. Nim Nee became your best friend, before you ever met Umae or Meneldor, even Vyne. Many months after, your father did not return for the harvest festival, and you were very upset. I tried to calm you, but inside I knew that something had happened, and so did my father...Haldir came to me, and told me Celeth had been killed in battle, along with his father and brother..."
Asenath's eyes filled with tears, seeing her mother as she spoke through her pain, and feeling the pain herself.
"I wanted no more than death, I could not bear my sorrow." Selmathin recalled, as if from a nightmare. "The one who inside carried with him all of my love, all my life, had left me, and I became very ill, for a very long time. Your grandfather took care of you, while my mother cared for me. And had she not cared for me the way she did, and had you not brought such joy to my bedside, in my darkest days, I surely would have died."
Asenath laid her head on her mother's shoulder, placing her arm around her, eyes closing tight. "And all the time I expected father to return, that death was merely a passing thing. I always wish I would have known him longer...but I know how much he loved us, and I know he gave to me the greatest gift anyone ever could have. Nim Nee."
Selmathin wiped her tears, resting her head on Asenath's. "I have but one more thing to tell you."
Asenath slowly sat back up, waiting patiently for her to speak.
"When Haldir told me of your father's death, he presented me with Celeth's sword, but as Celeth's best friend, I told Haldir to keep it with him, and dear to him." said Selmathin. She then lowered her head to her lap to the thing wrapped in cloth, and Asenath's eyes followed.
"What is that?" she finally asked.
Selmathin rose, and turned to Asenath. She looked down at the cloth, then slowly began to unravel it. Asenath's eyes fell on the blade, and she was taken in awe, unable to move, nor speak. Selmathin presented the sword, it glinted in the moonlight. "This is Laivestar, the sword of Celeth."
Asenath stared in wonderment, she had never seen a sword so beautiful, and so lethal. The symbol of the House of Elestar was set in gold on it's handle, and Elvish inscriptions flowed down the side.
"Lord Elestar forged Laivestar with the skill of Lithaglar, and ointment from the Tree of Laive flows within the silver and gold of it's design. It holds great power."
"Haldir has returned it to us?" asked Asenath with amazement.
"Yes. Perhaps tomorrow you will know why. He will be pleased that I am giving it to you." said Selmathin.
Asenath was able to pull her eyes away from the sword, she looked at her mother. "You are giving me Laivestar?" she could barely utter the words.
Selmathin held out the sword in reply. "Your father would want you to have it."
Asenath slowly took it from her, careful and fearful. It was light yet fierce, and molded to her hand. She gently waved it back and forth, it's radiance sparkling. Laivestar was now her blade.

OMC Nath! Your grandmother is related to Galadriel? Galadriel is my grandmother! I wasn't going to say anything about it until the next part of my history, but when I read yours, I had to tell you. omc!
