I try my best not to think about Gollum too much. emoticon

He is a very pitiful creature, the most tragic character in this entire story. emoticon

posticon good thoughts, everyone

Except *stares at missy* he is NOT hot! lol

Okay, on the movie split personality scene-- I didnt like shooting it with those two angles. I felt like it took away from the very tragic nature of Gollum. People *laughed* at it. And that bothered me, because to me there is *nothing* funny about such an intense struggle. The way Andy Serkis acted it was sufficient.. I think shooting it the way they did lost something. Just my opinion.

Okay, now for my thoughts on the character himself.

Gollum

Gollum is an important and deep character. He reflects very poignantly the struggle many face between greed, powerlust, and the desire, even need, to do good. The reader is very much hopeful for him. We *want* him to be good almost as much as he does. Frodo also wants him to be good, because, feeling the weight of the ring as much on his soul as on his neck, heavier and heavier, tiring him more and more, he needs to feel that there is redemption for one who is so affected by the ring-- in short, he views Gollum as a test of his own future.

Sam, on the other hand, utterly untainted by the ring's power most of the time they are with Gollum, has no sympathy or much kindness for Gollum, which is both in character (wanting to protect Frodo) and out of character (being almost cruel). Unlike Frodo, who calls Gollum Smeagol, for his former, and one would hope future, self, Sam calls him only by his acquired name, Gollum, and two unhappy nicknames: Slinker and Stinker (reflecting again, almost unknown to Sam himself, Gollum's struggle which polarizes his nature into two selves hopelessly intertwined).

To my own eyes, Sam is very much indictative of Tolkien's thoughts. I noticed while reading something I consider very important.. how Gollum is called. Three people in LotR refer to him as Smeagol: himself and Frodo during his struggle to be good, and Gandalf when explaining about Gollum to Frodo. The only other people who call him any name are Sam and Tolkien. And neither of those two call him Smeagol. To illustrate, forgive my nonquote, you'll see in the book things like, "'Smeagol helps good master," Gollum said." Any time G is called Smeagol, it is in dialogue-- Tolkien *never* calls him anything but Gollum. While Frodo believes Gollum can be good, can be Smeagol, Gollum can never be but Gollum. And, to me, that's half the tragedy.

Anyway, that's my thinking on it emoticon

I wish I could watch that Gollum/ Smeagol conversation right now! Next month, next month!!emoticon

It's a bit vague in my head, but I think liked the way it was done. As soon as Gollum called Smeagol "muuurrderrerrr" the laughter died in the cinema. A real reality check for the audience, especially if you were just giggling a moment before. I see what you mean though Zee, I was caught a bit off guard by the laughter knowing the tragic story of Gollum, and kinda confused why everyone though is was *that* hysterically funny.

 Cool observations!
