Re: The Book Topic

Well, I have 20 books I've got started-- 3 more than halfway done, lol-- and still have to take care of school reading! Last book I completed was for a paper last spring, so I'll do that...

Author: Willa Cather

Title: My ntonia

Plot summary: the reflections of a man on his childhood friend ntonia, a Bohemian Czech immigrant. Set in Nebraska, very much a book of remembrance and longing.

Comments: Good but a bit hard for younger people like myself. I found out that Cather never wanted high school students to read it-- a bit late found that-- saying she 'didn't want them to hate [her]'. I don't hate her, but I can see the wisdom because I am at a very different point in my life-- very much looking forward-- whereas this book is more mid-life, and very much looking back.

Re: The Book Topic

I have been reading:

Author: Chaim Potok

Title: The Chosen

Plot summary: Reuven Malter, a conservative Jew, and Danny Saunders, an Orthodox Hassidic Jew, form a friendship and struggle through the religious conflict between their fathers and their own beliefs. And that's a really silly summary but oh well. emoticon

Comments: I love this book. emoticon Read it.

Rating: 9/10

AND ALSO:

Author: Chaim Potok

Title: The Promise

Plot summary: (This time I'm stealing from the back of the book) For young Reuven Malter, it is a time of testing. With his teachers, he struggles for recognition of his radical methods of scholarship. With his old friend Danny Saunders - who himself had abandoned his legacy as the chosen heir to his father's rabbinical dynasty for the uncertain life of a healer - he battles to save a sensitive boy imprisoned by his genius and rage, defeated by the same forces of an unyielding past that challenge Reuven. Painfully and, at last, triumphantly, Reuven grows into a guardian of the ancient, sacred promise to his people, while earning his hard-fought right to make his own beginning. (whew!)

Comments: The sequel to The Chosen. I love Chaim Potok. emoticon If you want to know about them, ask me. emoticon Otherwise I don't quite know what to say.

So, I was and am reading those, but I was talking to emilyandilse last night about children's books, which is my favorite thing of all, so I got kind of nostalgic last night and now I'm also reading:

Author: Eloise McGraw

Title: The Moorchild

Plot summary: A child that doesn't fit in discovers she's a changeling, "an ugly, stupid, or strange child superstitiously believed to have been left by fairies in place of a pretty, charming child", and decides to retrieve her parent's lost child.

Comments: I read this when I was about in 3rd grade and I still love it. :teehee:

Rating: 7/10

AND

Author: Noel Streatfield

Title: Ballet Shoes

Plot summary: A to-some-people-very-boring-but-to-me-lovely book about three orphans who are adopted as babies and make up the "Fossil" family, who join The Children's Academy of Dancing and Training in London to earn money for their family, and learn to act, dance, sing, etc. Read it at Christmas. emoticon

Comments: Aww....I love this book....
