posticon The Legend of The Company

Came up with a smancy title I did. emoticon

Let's get to it!

Written by Lemon

The sun was setting on the Company house. The earliest of stars were coming out. This was one of Luthien's favorite time of day (the other being when the stars faintly disappear in the morning light) because it reminded her of the very beginning of the elevs, when all they had was the twinkling of stars. She stood now at the balcony of her room holding onto the side and leaning up a little, as if to be closer to the sky above, she then let out a deep sigh and walked into her room.

Everything seemed to be going right...and slow...for the Company right now. They were happy to be still for a few moments till the world caught up with them. They enjoyed dips in the lake, walks in the feild and watching the Company babies grow.

Yet, though these moments of silence were precious to them, they couldn't help but want something to happen. Something exciting, daring and thrilling. It could be said, no doubt, that the Company were some of the most adventurous and heroic people in the whole of Middle Earth.

But life seemed to stand still at their home, as the sun set and the stars came twinkling out. And even the wisest of the wise could tell what was ahead.

After the string of goodnights were echoed throughout the house the Company members fell asleep in the same bed, and had the same peacful dream. It did seem that all time had esaped from them completely.

The night drifted into a sea of quiet. The castle rose up under the moon, its banners swaying in the lazy breeze, the lake shining peacefully, and the meadows and forests still.

Yet a cold air came in from the north, and in it appeared a black horse, its rider clearly seen, his long hair white, eyes yellow and menacing, skin dark and green like his cloak.

Drawing his bow, the Dark Elf aimed at the castle looming before him, his eyes glinted, and he let an arrow loose. A trail of red flared violently through the sky, and the arrow disappeared into a dark window, suddenly illuminating the room inside......

Rain.

"Shut the window Zee, a storm is brewing." Sam muttered in his sleep.

"Sam! Wake up!" Zee cried.

"Where is Ethan?" Cheers called.

"Cheers, I'm here. We're all here." Ethan found her, the two looking away from each other and around with confusion.

"Good heavens its raining!" Sam shot up. His eyes were blurred. He rubbed his eyes, shivering from the cold dampness. He found a hazy gray sky, and stone all around. "Zee? Zee, what happened!"

"Trust me that question has been asked a million times, before you finally came around." Orlando told him.

"We're all right Sam." Zee calmed him down.

"Where are we?" He rose to his feet, wondering how he managed to get dressed like this in his sleep. For all of the Company were present and dressed, wearing simple gray cloaks. And, were they on an empty street?

"We've been here a hundred times." Rea said. "But its different. Minas Tirith. It has to be Minas Tirith, we've walked this road!"

"Yes! How did we get here? I don't remember coming to Minas Tirith!" Pippin cried. "I put my blanket over me and fell right to sleep last night, with Rea beside me sleeping herself. Oh, it was such a great evening, too! With the stories and food--"

"Yes, we all went to sleep last night." Lemon said. "But what do we do now, do we head home?"

"I would like to get out of the rain." Tobey mentioned.

"The tavern, I know where it is, not a long walk from here at all." Pippin replied. "Perhaps someone can tell us what is going on."

"Yes. We can't just return home without figuring out how we came to be here." Lea told them.

"These walls are so dirty, and look at the torn up road. When did the city ever have so many damages to it?" marveled Bee.

"Come on, come on you guys." Orlando said. And they went with Pippin to find the tavern. A depressing weight on them all, and on the city.

"There's someone, talk to him Tobey." Caz said, giving Tobey a little push as the stranger approached.

"Why do I have to talk to him?" Tobey squirmed to turn around.

"Shh! Just do it, just go." Caz placed him in the Man's path.

"Hello." Tobey said.

"Get out of my way." The Man grumbled, marching passed.

Tobey scratched his cheek. "Well, maybe his cat died or something."

"Hello!" They heard.

They looked up to the voice, rain pouring anew over their faces. "Are you visiting? Oh!" A woman waved from her balcony. "This city does not often see visitors!" She boomed with laughter.

"What are you talking about? Not long ago we visited this city." Bee replied.

"Anyhow, are you staying at the Inn? Oh--but what am I saying? Would you like to come inside a while? I may not have very much room for you all, but, you look terribly miserable out in the rain, poor dears." The woman said.

"Certainly!" Pippin answered for them.

Very soon the woman had come down and opened her door, which below had a small stone porch, before melting right into the street.

"Come in, I am Marla. Oh, so young! Poor dears. There you are, remove your cloaks I'll let them dry out. Warm yourselves in here by the fire, I'll return shortly."

"What a sweet lady, we'll have to tell her who we are. I'm sure she'd like to know." Zee said among them. They agreed.

"There! Now, can I get you anything to eat?--"

"Do you have any mushrooms? I haven't eaten since I last ate." Pippin told her.

"Thank you, Marla. May we introduce ourselves first?" Lemon smiled. "We're from Stonewain Valley, the Company."

"How lovely, though, how do you manage there?" Marla laughed. "So many young folks come through here, wishing they were one of them that lived in the Valley."

"What do you mean?" asked Cheers.

"The Company of Middle Earth!" Marla exclaimed. "Surely you learned about them."

"What are you talking about? We are the Company. King Elessar knows us." Mush answered her.

"Elessar?" The woman's face dropped.

The Company looked around at one another, silent as she.

"What a time indeed...my dears, you must mean Aragost. Tell me, how does he know you?" Marla asked.

"We don't know any Aragost. But, the king. Where is he?" Elijah said.

"Aragost is the king, child."

"Aragost is...king?" Azzie echoed her.

Marla nodded. "Well, I'll get those mushrooms for the young lad here." She sprung up a smile.

"Wait, the Company of Middle Earth, where are they?" asked Asenath.

"One of those legends, said to be amazing warriors. Well, in their time. Oh, how the earth could use something like them now, what with the Dark Elves and all, but that chapter is no more. Legends they are, great legends." Marla said, and with that she turned and went on her way.

"We've gone somewhere." Bee finally stated.

"I think that's safe to say." Nodded Cheers.

"Aragost?" Totoro uttered with disbelief.

"Dark Elves." Luthien said quietly.

"Minas Tirith a place no one wants to go anymore?" Baz sighed.

"Lions and tigers and bears, oh my." Elijah let his chin fall into his hands. "The question is, how long have we been gone?"

"Perhaps we should continue on our way, go to the tavern." Merry suggested.

"Leaving so soon?" Marla entered the room again, having heard Merry. "Oh, don't worry about it. At least take the mushrooms with you."

"Thank you." Pippin smiled.

"And thank you for your kindness." Mush said. "Tell us, though, how Aragost became king?"

"You are a strange bunch, I can tell you that." Marla laughed. "Aragost is the decedent of his fathers, and the great king Eldarion son of Elessar, of course."

"Thank you..." Mush answered, trying to smile, though she was hardly up to it.

"Goodbye, dears! Yes, put those cloaks on nice and warmly, stay out of the weather."

The Company left Marla's house with the mushrooms, and headed to the tavern.

"Minas Tirith looks so.....so different, depressing even." Muttered Nzie as they headed towards the tavern."The people are all unhappy, I can feel it" mused Luth, Asenath nodded in agreement.

"well you dont have to be elvish to figure that one out!!" added Elijah. "The whole town is so gloomy!"

"Well that Marla lady was right friendly" mumbled Pippin through a mouthful of mushroom "HEY, Gerroff, theyre MINE!" he shouted as Merry reached for some, looking thoroughly dissapointed when Pippin shouted."

"Come now Pippy, Merrys your best friend, and Marla gave you plenty, you can share!!" stated Rea.

Pippins face fell and he begrudgingly gave some to Merry.

It was getting dark quickly, and it felt as though they had been walking through the depressing scene for ages before they heard Azzie yell "HEY, come ON, I can see it, the tavern is just up here!!!"

They were all cheered at the thought of a friendly tavern full of laughter, songs and stories, yet when they entered, they found the atmosphere just as gloomy as on the street.....everyone gawked at the strange assortment of people that had entered the tavern......

They seated themselves at a long empty table.

"Has anyone got any coins??" enquired Angel, Checking herself over as she spoke. "Its so strange, just waking up in this travelling gear.....i dont know what i have with me."

Together they scrounged up enough for a few rounds of drinks, but decided on just one, in case they needed the rest.....a cheap one.

They were sipping their rather tasteless drinks when a man and his two friends approached them. He introduced himself as Remethor, and his friends as Mohron and Geldor.

"You aren't from around here, are you??" he half whispered.

"Well, in a manner of speaking...." started Frodo. Azzie kicked him hard under the table.
"Err...no" said Persis, "How did you know??"

"We dont normally get such a....diverse....group of travellers" muttered Mohron. "And you...(he jestured at the elves).....you dont look like Dark Elves."

"Dark Elves??" questioned Lea, shivering slightly as she did so.

"The Moriquendi, those Elves who refused the summons of the Valar to Valinor, or fell away on the Great Journey, and never saw the light of the Two Trees." recited Legolas.

"Yes, but now any that did not take the second passing are called the Dark Elves, dark no longer simply meaning they never saw the light of the trees, but that they are resentful, bitter, and that has turned to hate." Luthien said these words, not really knowing where they came from, but knowing that it was the truth, she could feel it.

"So that means....." whispered Lem, to Tor who was next to her....

He nodded "We are in the future." he whispered back, barely audiable.

"Err, yeah" said Geldor "I dunno about all that passing and trees stuff, But the hate sure sounds like the dark elves."

"Anyway," continued Remethor, "I just want to warn y'all, the land here is tough, you gotta all watch your backs, an uprising of Dark Elves have been slowly infiltrating the region from the east Wilderland for the past 100 years."

"Why doesn't the king just do something about it??" Asked Orlando.

"King Aragost, *bitter laugh* Hes useless" muttered Mohron.

Remethor muttered in disgust, "He is a disgrace to his lineage!! The great Kings Ellesar and Eldarion would be ashamed!!!! Aragost has made alliances with the Dark Elves. Who, in turn, have pressed wrong doings against the lands they settle in. Minas Tirith was once a beautiful city of wonders....now look at it!!"

"Gandalf will help!!" shouted Merry, "So will Lord Elrond and the Lady Galadriel!!"

"They cannot, the are gone..." mused Luthien in despair. "They passed over the seas long ago, just as the Dark Elves should have....The lands have been left in the hands of men, but the Dark Elves have intervened, and look at what has become."

"Well, just wanted you to be forewarned" said Geldor as the three Men stood to leave.

"Yes, Thankyou very much." replied Tobey, Shaking each of their hands in turn, to bid them farewell as they left.

"What can we do!!" groaned Baz.

"I think first of all we should make our way back to Stonewain" said Aragorn, very matter of factly.

"Yes, that seems the best course of action." agreed Stephen.

"We should get going as quickly as possible." announced Bee.

"Well, what are we waiting for!!, Lets get to the stables and find ourselves some horses...." said Jesse.

There was a moments silence while they all thought about home, their horses, Ma cooking in the kitchen, the children.

Caz was the first one to stand up and head defiantly for the door, they knew it was late, but they wanted to head off tonight, they had to......they all headed off in the direction of the nearest stables.

The rain had now stopped, but the dark night that had fallen did little to lift the Companys spirits as they trudged through the gloomy city streets. They were glad of their great number, for shifty looking men leered from shadowed doorways as they passed by, and drunken jeers with harsh laughter floated after them from narrow, crooked alleyways devoid of any light. Lea pulled her cloak up closer under her chin and moved nearer to Laura and Dominic who walked beside her.

It seems these so called Dark Elves are not the only unpleasant additions to the lands hereabout, she said with scorn, as a youth clearly the worse for wear stumbled out right in front of her and fell unceremoniously in a large muddy puddle.

Get out of it!

Dom roughly shoved the giggling man back to the curb, cursing under his breath at the tirade of insults hurled after him, but valiantly managing to hold in his own temper as Laura placed a calming hand on his shoulder.

I feel for the decent people of Minas Tirith who must now fear to walk the streets at night. King Elessar would have had these wastrels driven out of the City in no time, she said with bitterness in her voice.

Trouble will always attract those who revel in the confusion it brings. Zee commented nearby as Sam shook his head in disgust.

Up ahead and Caz, Luth, Nath, Mysa and Tor strode along in front, deep in their own individual musings. They ignored the wide patches of water that reflected the city lanterns in their dark surfaces, sloshing through them heedlessly. Suddenly Nath lifted her eyes from the cobbles and spotted a decent looking elderly man at his doorway; he was watching their progress with a curiousity tinged with apprehension. She broke away and approached him with a kind smile.

Excuse me Sir, but can I trouble you for directions to the nearest stable? Is this the right direction? She pointed towards the lower levels where they had been heading.

Aye, thats right miss, just carry on like youre doin an you should reach them soon enough if you dont stray from the main road.

Thank you for your help.

Not at all m lady.

Not long afterwards and they found themselves gathered outside a large but neglected stone building in a quieter part of town. The air smelled strongly of damp hay and the sharp scent of animal quarters. Their spirits glumly fell at the inhospitable look of the place. The hobbits however, being the most level-headed and practical of the group, soon had collected everyone together to discuss the way forward. It was decided Azzie was the best choice to barter a deal with the owner of the stables, so with a confident air and breezy step she approached the tall wooden doors and rapped loudly and clearly with her fist.

Hello! she cried. Hello? Anybody there?

Silence fell and they waited with expectancy.

Nobody came.

She turned back to look at the others with a questioning expression and Lemon made a motion for her to try again.

HELLO! CAN YOU HEAR ME! WAKE UPPPP!

She pounded violently on the door.

Again they waited, and this time there was definite movement to be heard within the bowels of the building. As the noise neared however, it became clear that whoever approached was not in the best of tempers.

What in h-lls name are people doing banging on my door at this time of night! The sheer inconsiderateness of people today, I cannot believe the absolute audacity! Ill give them summat to shout about, the dung-brained, warg-faced, orc for a mother, troll for a father distURBERS OF THE PEACE! NOW WHAT DO YOU WANT?!!!!!!!

The door was flung open and Azzie took an anxious step back as a hook-faced, long chinned person emerged, complete with stripy night shirt and hat, gripping a candle dripping wax on to the doorstep as it was thrust angrily into her face.

Erm.. she stammered, taken aback for a moment, but quickly regaining her composure. Well, my friends and I, she motioned behind her, we would like to borrow some horses. Please. She added as an after thought.

The man laughed. Some horses ey? You tear a person away from a nice warm bed in the only few hours of sleep he gets and expect him to give you horses?

He laughed louder and more hysterically, contorting his face into a squished up attack of mirth.

Azzie looked on blankly.

Perhaps we could step inside and discuss the matter further?

He stopped laughing and eyed her suspiciously.

Discuss the matter further?

He pondered the thought for a moment, he looked like he was cooking up an unpleasant idea.

Well, yeeeees, now that Im up, we might as well see if we can reach some agreement. Come in my dear.

He stepped aside and smiled menacingly at her as she passed inside. The door slammed shut.

They were gone for quite a time, and Frodo was becoming quite restless. He was almost ready to storm the building with Merry and Badger when the door opened again and Azzie stepped daintily out. The Company quickly got up from their various loiterings and sat around on the low wall outside to hear what she had to say.

Well, she said with a sigh. There is some good news and some bad news Im afraid. The good news is... we will be able to have the horses by the day after next.

A cheer broke out among the group.

But..... he wont just lend us them for nothing. Were going to have to work our butts off before he will consent to lend us them. She grimaced. He is a bit on the creepy side guys, but what choice do we have?

None. Mush said resignedly.

Well, the Company is not afraid of hard work. Tor encouraged. Come on guys, at least we can get out of here soon, did we really expect to get something for nothing?

What exactly do we have to do for him Az? Nath enquired.

He wouldnt say, well find out tomorrow I guess. I think he wanted the night to figure out how best to use this to his advantage. she rolled her eyes.

Were going to need some sleeping quarters then. Lets head back to the inn we passed in the last street.

Nath had silently decided that if this man expected to exploit the Company, they would get more out of him than horses. They would need supplies for their journey too, after all.

From the stable house, the Company passed by several run down buildings. It was the worst bit of the City they had seen of everything. It was becoming foggy, and there lingered in the air a dirty smell. They wanted to get away. If the worst became of them, Frodo said, they would sleep outside the main gate. That is, for what few hours they had before dawn. Planning on this, they headed down throughout the levels of the city, and though they had been no where near the highest peaks, it seemed a very long walk. They came to an edge, massive walls with various balconies stood below, some for walking on, and others strategic areas outlooking all directions. The guards among the city were few, the Company noticed, and those that were around seemed to be standing by their own authority.

The Company gathered at a platform that rose just behind one of the great walls, and they saw the Anduin River in the distance and under the moon, cutting like a stream of light this way and that through the vast land before them, fading in night's haze and out to sea. A chilly breeze stirred, an awful and beautiful whistling swept through the avenues around them as the wind surged through Minas Tirith. The banner that stood upon the tower next to them, rose and then fell again, and everything returned to silent.

For a short while, the Company spoke quietly among themselves, gazing lonesomely towards the North, to the valley they called home. And as Areata's eyes glanced back and forth around the empty streets, her attention fell on a darkened door post, where above a sign hung reading Beldur's Inn.

Turning to the others, she tugged on Pippin's sleeve. "Look, an inn! Now we won't have to walk all down through the city looking for some terrible place to sleep outside."

"Do any of us have money for pay?" Cheers asked, she shook her head. "If only."

"Well, let's not give up altogether. We made a deal for horses, didn't we?" Frodo said.

Azzie huddled coldly next to him. "Do you think it's possible?" she answered.

"Yes, that's it, we'll make a deal with the inn keeper!" decided Sam. He straightened his cloak, and headed across the street in a ready or not fashion.

"Careful now, Sam!" Pippin stopped him, and lifted his voice cautiously. "He may not be kind to hobbits..."

"Even if we did make a deal, how would we keep our end? We have a ton of work to do tomorrow as it is." Lea told them.

"Do we have anything of worth with us? Maybe one of us can play merchant and strike a deal that way." suggested Orlando.

Pippin clutched the wrapped bundle under his arm. "NOT my mushrooms!"

"Not to worry Pippin." laughed Frodo.

"I don't believe we have anything valuable enough." Areata sighed.

Asenath, suddenly reaching underneath her cloak, felt around a moment, before retrieving her Elven star. "I have it!"

"Nath!" Areata exclaimed, her face lighting up from it's soft glow.

"How is it that you have your star, and none of us carry anything of ours?" Orlando stared with amazement.

"Asenath does not have her star, it has her, in a way, my friends." Luthien explained in her wisely voice.

"Actually, she lost it one time in the castle." smiled Orlando slyly.

"What in the world did Luthien mean?" Pippin scrunched up his face confused.

"But, I was wearing it as I went to bed." Asenath replied to Orlando.

"Spirituality, I guess, Pippin." Tobey answered him.

They all fell silent a moment.

"You can't give your star to some inn keeper, Nath." Bee said.

"She doesn't have to..." Areata lifted it up from Asenath's hand and studied it for a moment, as if coming up with some grand plot. "Bee, you can help."

"Don't say it like that Rea, I'm tired, I don't do magic well when I'm tired!" Bee warned.

"Bee...."

The door of the inn creaked open, and Areata poked her head around, eyes first. She saw, sitting on a wooden box, a hefty man engulfed in the smoke of his pipe, his legs outstretched lazily before him. And had he not been puffing away, she would have thought he was asleep. Beyond him were tables and chairs, and there were many people. Some talking loudly, others gloomily gazing without a word to say.

"Now, Bee." Areata said, and pushed the door open just enough for Bee to move passed.

Bee walked here and there, before sitting down at an empty table, trying to look very inconspicuous.

"And now!" shouted Cheers outside the door, "The great Areata, who has come long and far!......A hobbit of many treasures!"

They heard a clatter on the front steps, and Cheers snapping at Pippin to move. Areata emerged through the doorway, tossing her lovely hair about.

Bee stifled her laughter.

"Good evening Beldur's Inn!" Areata smiled, and was well received with raising of mugs and the occasional whistle.

"May I be of service to ya?" A thin old man asked from behind the bar, not as thrilled as the inn by her entry, but looking rather upset.

"Why yes! I'm a traveling merchant, I'd like to speak with the inn keeper." Areata replied happily, walking up, even as the man leaned over the counter to see her.

After staring at her long and hard, he answered. "What'd ya want?"

Areata snapped her fingers.

Tobey entered through the door to her service, helping her into the awkwardly high chair. Areata giggled at him and kissed his cheek, "What a nice boy." she said, proceeding as she waved him off with her hand. "Well, now, I carry with me many treasures. Treasures beyond your wildest imagination, so treasurful that all the treasure in this city would probably never compensate. I've been places, places you've only ever dreamed of, and have obtained some of the most costly and precious items in Middle-Earth."

The inn keeper rubbed his chin with his hand, leaning in. "Ya came here to trade?" he asked lowly.

"Indeed I have." Areata nodded. "That is...for one night's stay at this inn for myself and a few of my servants."

"A night's stay you say?" The inn keeper resumed his rigid posture, "for what."

Areata tapped her fingers along the table, as if thinking what to choose from among all her treasure. "Ah! I know just the thing. You'll love it I'm sure. Pippy darling!" she called.

Pippin stepped into the doorway and held up a bag of 'things'. Areata pretended to rummage through it, then yelped with joy as she 'found' it, even though it was the only thing in there...

"Here we are." she held the elven star up, marveling at it.

"A lousy piece of glass?" The inn keeper sneered, "be on your way."

"Very well, then. I suppose you don't care that it has magical powers..." Areata's eyes fixed on him.

"Rubbish." The inn keeper chuckled.

Areata then held it up as it began glowing, and Bee closed her eyes.

"Serve your master!" Areata commanded the star.

Bee began saying something under her breath, then jumped in her chair as several dishes broke. "Oops....."

"Bee!" Areata hissed.

"What'd ya say?" The inn keeper's eyes moved away from the star and to Areata.

"Oh--uhh--" Areata stammered. "Eee!....just part of the spell." she laughed.

Bee closed her eyes and tried again. This time all the drinks waiting to be served began making themselves.

"You see!" Areata pointed. "So long as you have this star, you will never have to prepare a drink again."

The inn keeper stared dumbfounded as drinks flew passed him.

"Well?" Areata smiled.

"Ya got a deal. Ha!" The inn keeper pounded his fist on the counter, grabbing the star from Areata's hand.

Areata giggled, blowing a kiss at him as she hopped down. "Come along servants, we must rest before we travel to a far away land!"

"Dardum, unlock them some rooms will ya?" The inn keeper called to the hefty man smoking his pipe, who lazily rose with a set of keys.

The Company walked in randomly, following Areata across the room and up a dark staircase...

Dardum slowly ambled down the dim corridors of the first floor, unlocking room after room into which a couple of the Company disappeared each time. Then, that floor eventually being filled up, he grunted up a second staircase and repeated the process once again until all the group were settled and the inn fuller than it had been in many a year.Legolas, Orithil and Greenleaf were the last to be shown to their room, a small, bare chamber at the very end of a winding corridor. The light from the torch brackets did not quite reach this shadowy corner, but the elves' eyes could still see keenly and they took the key from Dardum and unlocked it themselves as he was having a bit of trouble picking the right one from his packed bunch. He gruffly grunted his thanks, his large bulk disappearing off down the hall and round a corner while the elves moved into the chamber and looked around with grave expressions.

Greenleaf made straight for the small, square window that overlooked the terraced roofs falling away down to the bottom of the city. He had to bend down in order to peer out of it.

'No moon shines tonight, and the air feels chill and cold. This is not the Minas Tirith we knew. A sadness threads through the ways of the city and over the rooftops. I will be glad to leave this place, my brothers.'

He straightened up and looked around at them with worry in his expression. Orithil nodded his agreement from where he sat by his bedside, yet Legolas lay flat on his bed staring oblivious at the ceiling, and seemed not to have heard.

'I feel incomplete without my knives and bow,' Orithil admitted, scratching his upper arm uncomfortably. ' We must arm ourselves at the first opportunity which arises. We can cut our own bows and arrows if it comes to that.'

'Perhaps we will find the stable master more charitable during the sunlit hours.'

'It is possible, but I fear it will not be wise to hold out much hope of help from that quarter. He appeared the worst kind of Man.'

Greenleaf turned back to the window with a sigh.

'I do not like the feel of this city.'

Legolas turned over to face the wall, shutting his eyes to try and drive out his brother's voices. He still could not endure much company, even that of his own flesh and blood, much preferring isolation where no effort of communication was needed. The bizarre happenings of the night only briefly infringed on his consciousness, which was in truth in places far away over mountains and rivers, highlands and valleys, resting by the sea in an ancient city bathed with soft grey tones. Perhaps he was only experiencing an unusual vision brought on by unease of mind, and in the morning would find himself back in Stonewain, still chained to his unhappy thoughts.

The morning dawned in too few hours however, and he found he was not after all imagining their plight. A heavy days labour lay before them, and with that sobering thought, the Greenleaf brothers made their way down to the dining hall for breakfast.

The Company had split up among six of the rooms in the inn. In one of the rooms was gathered Caz, Lemon, Cheers, Kimi, Laura, Mush, Asenath, and Bee.

"Feels heavenly to have your boots off, doesn't it?" Mush said as she walked across the cold floor.

In the room fit four beds, two on one side of the room and two on the other side, with a desk, two chairs, and a rug somewhere in the middle.

"Yes, no boots. The sensation alone is causing me to fall asleep." Lemon yawned. "I suppose your spell will last long throughout the night, right Bee?"

"We'll find out." Bee said as she climbed under the covers. "Oh, the look on his face was to die for."

"Move over Cheers." Mush prompted as she sat down on their bed, watching Cheers revel in the spacious moment, arms spread out exhausted.

"What is to become of the Company?" Cheers asked, rolling over, smacking her stuffy pillow.

"I don't know. It's all so strange, isn't it?" Mush said, slipping under the blanket.

"I know one thing, whatever work we must do tomorrow, won't be pleasant." Bee said.

"We must think of our horses then, riding away from this dreadful city." Kimi replied.

"Suppose what they say is true, that the Dark Elves have been harming so many people. Do you think Ma Took is okay?" Cheers asked.

"If any evil dared to rule over Stonewain, this city, under the law of Elessar, would protect it! It is a part of the kingdom." Lemon said confidently. "Even if we haven't been there."

"Yes, but this is an entirely different place under the rule of some king Aragost. We can't be sure." Caz answered.

"Ugh, these beds are too small!" Mush groaned, turning on her side to try and make more room. "Move over Cheers."

Cheers grabbed the blanket. "I am moved over! I'm hugging the edge of the bed!"

"Two persons per bed, what were they thinking?" snapped Caz, trying to get comfortable herself.

"Everyone sleep on their side." said Mush.

Immediately everyone turned to their side of the bed, and soon everyone was asleep. In a few short hours dawn loomed in the window. First to awake was Asenath, she roused Laura, then Lemon. And soon the girls were getting up.

In the dark hallway stood everyone else, ready for their busy day. All were tired, hungry, and wished to be home again. There was no food to eat, except for a couple of mushrooms each, from Pippin. They headed down the stairs, groggy and silent.

As they passed by the bar, Bee saw the inn keeper sleeping in a chair, head ****ed back as he snored. She snatched Asenath's elven star from him, handing it to Asenath as they walked out. And only a little while after they had been walking, Bee's spell wore off.

As the sun rose, the earth faded from blue, but it was still quite chilly. They arrived at the stable house, and were expected out front. Already people passed through the streets, much busier than they had been the stormy day before. And though the sun was shining, things were still uneasy.

At once they were sent to clean the stalls, rake hay, stack hay, lift storage, move storage, polish, paint the food shed, paint the side of the stable, sweep the stable, feed the horses, groom the horses, and a few other things the Company would have rather not been doing...

Around noon, the stable keeper stomped in and threw a bag of food at them, pointing to the well out back, suggesting water. Then he was gone, leaving them with a bit of advice.

"Be back to work within fifteen minutes, or no deal!"

"Fifteen minutes?," Lea said with despair,"That's hardly enough time to take a few bites!""Well, let's just try to make the best of it. We must have those horses if we're ever going to get out of here,"Orlando said.

The Company all got water from the old well and then sat in a circle on the dirty stable floor. They opened the bag and emptied its contents. There were bits of fruit and bread and a few slices of meat. It wasn't near enough to fill each person, but they divided the food between themselves as best they could. The Company ate in silence, all being lost in thought.

When exactly fifteen minutes had gone by, the stable keeper came marching back in.

"Alright, now, get back ta work! There's still plenty ta do before the day's over!", he said gruffly.

The Company wearily picked up the leftover food and got back to their labors.

"I'm wondering if that awful stable keeper will actually give us the horses after all!," Azz said to Lem,"He could be tricking us."

Lem shuddered.

"I hope not!"

Azzie's fear did not come true, however. At long last, in late evening, the stable keeper came and grimly told them that the horses were theirs. The Company, too tired to say much, hurriedly thanked the man and saddled the horses.

Outside, a full moon was casting a cold silver light upon Minas Tirith and little stars were beginning to dot the velvety-black sky. The Company stood contemplating what to do next.

"We can't go back to the Inn,"Asenath said.

"I think that we should leave Minas Tirith right away and head for Stonewain Valley,"Merry said.

"We need supplies,"Baz pointed out.

Others nodded their heads in agreement.

"We have no money, though,"Rea reminded them,"How would we pay for any food?"

Everyone fell silent.

"I have something,"Luthien said suddenly,"While we were at the Inn, I found a beryl in the pocket of my cloak. I do not know how it got there, for I never carry any Elven treasures with me, but it can be of help to us now by serving as a substitute for money."

"Isn't it worth a lot?,"Legolas asked.

"It is worth enough,"Luthien replied,"We will be able to purchase a good amount of food for our journey with it."

"We will have to wait until morning to leave, then,"Elen said,"For nobody is up but us."

"No,"Luthien said,"All we have to do is take what food we want and leave the beryl there."

Luthien, Asenath, Lemon, Cheers, Azzie, and Elen went to get the food. They soon returned with several bags. Once they were packed, the Company mounted their horses and made their way out of Minas Tirith and across the dreary land to Stonewain Valley.

On they rode through the night and into the gleam of morning. Although much sadness had entered their beloved Gondor, the group could not help but be cheered as the sun rose, revealing the familiar beauty and quiet of their homeland all around them, and in their hearts hope sprung anew that once they reached the familiar valley of Stonewain, they would find at least some comfort and answers to their questions.Spurred on in eagerness to see Stonewain Castle once more, they did not stop until the midday sun was high in the misty blue sky, her rays beating down oppressively upon their uncovered heads.

Merry nudged his little pony forward and weaved his way to the front of the procession, where Aragorn, Edmund, Gilbert and Lemon rode in quiet conversation.

'Begging your pardon,' he interjected, squinting up at them from his smaller mount, ' but is there any chance we'll be stopping for lunch in the foreseeable future? We hobbits want to reach Stonewain as much as anybody, really we do, but there are some things necessary for us to keep our ponies pointed in the right direction, and food is one of 'em. Else we'll just faint right away.'

Aragorn let out his deep rich laugh, and the others joined him.

'Master Merry, I know fine well you are in no danger of fainting dead away from malnutrition just yet. However, this heat is beginning to tell on even the strongest of the horses, it would be kinder to stop now for a bite and let them take a drink.'

He looked back to catch the others attention and soon they had all agreed to retreat into the shade of a fir copse that grew alongside the road, where Elen managed to scout out a clear mountain stream running through the trees on its way towards the plains. The horse gathered there in relief and drank their fill in the sweet scented mountain air, while some of the Company knelt by the clear running water and filled water bottles full to the brim.

Zee and Areata took charge of the lunch preparation, recruiting Asenath, Luthien, Cheers, Annie and Mush as helpers. Soon they had the operation in full swing, and though the food was plain and quite sparse, they managed to fix up some passable sandwiches, cold meats and fruit to ward off the hunger and revive the strength of the travellers. Presently they had called the others to lunch and everyone sat around quite contentedly in the shady warmth of the woods, insects buzzing around the sunny patches and the sound of the water tinkling merrily by.

Refreshed and revitalized, the Company soon were anxious to get moving once again, and made motions to pack up and start off, when a noise from further back in the trees reached the ears of the elves. They looked across at each other in alarm, alerting the others that something was wrong.

'What is it?' Badger worriedly asked Orithil nearby.

'I think we have disturbed some creature of the forest. They are coming to investigate the noise I fear.' He turned to peer through the shadowy trunks.

A great roar reached them, echoing down the wooded slope.
