'The horses! Quick!' yelled omer, starting over to the stream where the horses were almost ready to bolt. The Company hastily grabbed all their belongings and arrived at their saddles, quickly finding the stirrups to hoist themselves up. Pippin, panicking, needed three goes before he was in his, Areata finally leaning over and helping him up.

'What is it Legolas?' Caz asked, spinning her horse around, a crashing sound coming ever closer.

'A bear,' he replied, looking over, ' and a large one by the sound of it.'

'Let's get out of here,' shouted Nath, Nim Nee springing forward and away, everyone else following close behind as a giant bear suddenly emerged into the clearing.

They had reached the road again before anyone noticed Lemon was missing.

'Oh no.' Elijah groaned. 'If she's hurt...'

He immediately spun back the way they came, waiting for no one; Tor, Bee, Nath and Strider following at once. Mush managed to convince the others to stay where they were in safety.

'It's no use all of us crowding in there, no one will be able to move,' she reasoned, blocking the way.

Lemon had got to her horse along with everyone else of course, but Narie had been further back along the river and so she arrived into the clearing at the same time as the bear. Narie had reared to fend off the attack and Lemon fell to the floor, hitting her head on a rock. The horse would not leave her mistress unprotected and the bear could only prowl around, growling threateningly.

Elijah burst through the trees and rounded on the bear, earning himself to be swiped out of his saddle by a great paw.

'Elijah!' Lemon screamed dazedly, for she had come round. He was not hurt though and was able to reach her and support her spinning head in his lap as the others distracted the great beast.

Tor leapt off his horse and faced the surprised bear. He shimmered and then rose up into his woodland form.

The bear growled furiously, rising up on to its hind legs, but Tor only blinked calmly then opened his mouth wide.

'ROOOOOAAAAWWWRRRR' he replied, the fur of the bear blowing back in the sudden rush of air.

The bear after this, decided these strangers were perhaps too much for him, and shooting a nasty backwards glance at Tor, ambled off out of sight, to the great relief of everyone. Bee and Nath rushed over to Lemon to see if she was ok.

'Yes, I'm fine. Don't worry,' she laughed, slowly being helped up by three eager sets of arms.

They left the clearing and joined the others on the road, Lemon being greeted with relief, and they set off with great speed, wanting more than ever to get home.

Re: The Legend of The Company

The Company rode across the barren plains that flowed North. After passing through a small expanse of woods, where they had taken rest, and had encountered the bear earlier that day, they came to a set of hills that rose high over all the valley before the River Anduin. There like a city crumbling upon it's own foundations, the stronghold of Minas Tirith stood, once perfected in newly carved stones of white, rising above the barren landscape in kingly glory, remembered in Elessar's day, a time long passed.
Lemon's eyes filled with tears as they stared on, and all of the Company ached to see the city so utterly desolate and ruined.

They directed their horses North, and continued on, venturing into a dreary set of forests, which told them nothing of the Greywood they once knew and recognized. There grew a hard chilled wind against their faces, and the trees creaked rather than swayed in the air, as if rotten and dead. Totoro was lonely to see them not alive with green, and the loss of life in the forest made the Elves sad. As they passed from the forest, Totoro grew a new tree, and it's roots mingled with the dead ones, and they came to life again. He turned to Nausicaa, who smiled at him, and as they rode ahead, no one had noticed the newly revived trees, save her.

The Elves spirits did brighten again, and Luthien, seeing the Company's dreariness, began to sing a lovely song. At it's end, Sam felt refreshed, and he began to sing an old Gamgee tune that his Hobbit friends knew well. The chiming of their merry voices together brought smiles to everyone, and they wondered how many times such a dark time lay in front of them, and their own music had brought them joy when nothing did. So as to continue the tradition, the Men carried the song over into an old song of Gondor, and all the regions of Men within. It was a courageous song, and they all felt it, as though the words of war and despair, yet hope and glory, belonged to them.

By it's end, the whole of the Company sang the last verse, "shadows befall us, but we are not defeated, we stand tall, in this wilderness land of dark." And their voices rang out from one to another, and they were proud and happy to be together. But as they came over the hills to the South of Lake Lossarnach, and to Stonewain Valley, all were hushed. Their home, the white castle that had stood at the base of the Lake was no more, and the Valley spoke of it's ruin, as the meadows were barren, and the forests around were dark. Edmund rode slowly ahead, but only a ways. His face said nothing, for all the faces of the Company were lost in some gaze of stone.

At long last the silence was broken, by the sobs of Areata, who had told herself she would find Ma Took warm in safe in this strange new world, if only she could find Stonewain again. And Frodo and Azzie, and Zee and Sam, would not find their children. Edmund motioned forward with his hand, and by some strength no one else possessed, he started off. And like the wandering of sheep, one by one, the Company horses followed in a broken scatter, some slower, some faster, making their way down the hillside. The completeness of their shock now flooded their eyes, thinking it to be some trickery of mind, Stonewain Castle was truly no where to be seen, save a mess of rubble at it's foundation. They stared in utter illusion, some with tears streaming down their faces.

"It cannot be!" someone cried out, and everyone turned to the first of them to say anything, watching Merry as he dismounted his horse, and ran to the ruined castle.

"What kind of attack could have so completely leveled this place?" wondered Arnarmo.

"Several, at least." answered Orlando.

"Minas Tirith is in shams, our castle has been destroyed, the forests are decayed. All is lost!" cried Baz. "Where have we gone? I want to return, someone please show us the way!"

"Yes! Where is Gandalf?" cried Fiz after her.

"He has passed over the Sea, just as everyone else. We are alone here." said Legolas.

"No! I refuse to believe it! We cannot have just leaped passed so much time and not be affected at all by it!" justified Lemon.

"Time is not the question here, whether we know how we came to be in this moment or not. It is what has happened to this land, and we must find some answers." replied Legolas.

"There are no answers, we're lost in another time." said Elijah.

"Elanor, Elanor!" cried Zee, tears running down her face. Sam held her close, and Areata and Pippin embraced them.

Azzie could say nothing, but buried her face in Frodo's shoulder, Mariel and Luke's sweet faces overwhelming her thoughts. Persis and Asenath wrapped their arms around her, and Cheers Frodo.

"We must think here, let us clear our minds and think." said Voronil.

"Marla, the Woman from the city, she spoke of Dark Elves. What are they? Could they have destroyed our castle?" asked Lea.

"Yes, Marla! How I wish we would have known of this, I would have asked her many more questions." said Mush.

"And she mentioned 'the Valley', didn't she? How come she didn't say anything about our castle being gone?" wondered Lea.

"She said that the Company was legendary, and she was surprised, remember, we hadn't learned about the Company. Apparently we should have known about our own castle being destroyed, I suppose, according to her." said Mush.

"Of the Dark Elves, they remain hidden away in all the Ages of Arda. Some lay in quiet, others learn of great evil in their wasted lands, and are satisfied with nothing but it's dominion, yet the Valar keep impossible the dreams that they dream from ever taking shape." said Orithil. "They worshiped a spirit of evil, who would have used them in his minions, had not the Valar withheld their crossing into any land."

"I wish not to think of such things." said Cheers sadly.

"Everyone we ever knew, gone." said Kimy. "Ma, Angelica, Molly, Web, and Poppy. Our loved ones, our children, our friends, our homes."

At this, all of them grew silent, and their minds wandered to their own losses.

"And our castle, just look at it..." spoke Fiz softly.

They all looked in sadness, remembering the days they had spent in spring time's gentle loveliness, summer's adventure, autumn's whispering beauty, and winter's quiet. All in the castle of white, with it's slim towers looking over all the Valley, and to the White Mountains, where the flag of the Company up high always seemed to blow.

"This is a shame!" said Pippin. "All of our gardens and fruit trees long died and gone, just as well the meadows be wilted."

"Yet it is still our home. Yes, that it is. Do you not all feel it? This is where our hearts are." said Orlando. "Even as a ruined castle."

Asenath saw the strength in his eyes, and stood near to him. "Yes, we are still the Company of Middle-Earth, we must be strong. This is the one thing that we know for certain in all the unknown."

Everyone took strength in each other, and they comforted one another there, and the evening soon came upon them. Merry, Baz, Mush, Elen, Bee, and Fiz, fixed them something to eat, and they sat below the crumbled stairs of their castle. And to Merry's summoning, they would journey to The Shire at dawn...surely the Hobbits had not changed, in this upside down world.

"Hurry now, dear! We have to get to the Shire before the sun sets." Merry said, helping Baz onto her horse.

"Oh, Merry, if the Shire is destroyed I don't know what I'll do..." Baz said, trying to hold down a sob.

"I know, darling. But everything will be alright, I promise you that." Merry tried to encourage her, trying to believe himself that it was really going to be alright.

The large trail of horses and their riders started away from the torn-down castle at the crack of dawn. What a sight they were! They all slumped foward in their saddles, their exhausted eyes fixed on what was ahead of them, and none spoke a word. All thought their own thoughts, silently. Some thought of what they'd lost, others on the hope they clung to.

The day dragged on like ages. The sky was dark and gray, the grass was soggy and had no green color to it, only yellowish-brown. The wind blew in violent, chilling gusts that spooked the horses and discouraged the riders. Indeed, one would think, was their nothing beautiful and good left in this world?

At noon, they stopped to eat what little rations they had and to rest the horses. They sat in a circle under some old, black trees for shelter, for it had begun to rain. While eating they were all very quiet.

"I cannot believe this is real. I simply cannot!" Lemon mumbled angrily to herself.

"Yes, Lemon, I also find it hard to believe. Yet, none can doubt the reality of it all. It is real, whether we wish it to be or not, and we must make the best of it." Aragorn replied, silently swearing that he would make the best of this, and change the fate of Middle Earth...even if his life was the price.

"The fate of us all hangs by a single thread. One hope is all we have, that thread...that hope is the Shire. It is all we have." Frodo said, speaking to all but eyes fixed on Azzie.

The Company could only stare at one another and think.

"Come! The sun is high in the sky, my friends. We must journey on now." Legolas said, gathering up the bags they had unloaded.

The Company set out once more. They were still in the grim mood they had been that morning. All except the Hobbits. Their spirits had risen at the thought of the Shire truly being as it always had been. Surely it wasn't dead and gone like Rivendell or in shacks like Gondor! Not the Shire!

They galloped on and on through the day, not looking back but all sight looking foward. To the Shire...their one and only hope!

It was dusk as they approached the lands outside the Shire. They horses slowed down a bit, after a long day of running. They hobbits hearts beat fast at the sight of the first hills of the Shire. Only a few more miles and they would see their Shire. Only a few more miles...

As they recognised the hills of their homeland, the hobbits urged their horses onwards faster, outstripping the other company members....then as they reached the rise that overlooked the Shire they stopped and took in the view.....It was wonderful, the Shire looked almost untouched from last they saw it!!! The hobbits of the company rejoiced but the Human company members were cautious and suspicious, and the elves.....the elves could feel a change in the air from the shire they knew although it looked the same...but they knew not what and had not the heart to dampen the hobbits spirits when the change may not be anything of importance.

They travelled into the nearest town and it was there that they noticed some differences... Where were the hobbit children laughing and playing in the street?? Where were all the young hobbits walking hand in hand, all the elder hobbits fishing in the Brandywine??? All through the town they rarely saw the shire-folk and when they did, they were either too busy arguing to notice them or eyeing them suspiciously.......Yes, the shire looked the same, but it had indeed changed.

The hobbits all looked close to tears, Baz was sniffing, Pippin was looking around helplessly, as if he had misplaced something and expected to find it at any moment, all the enthusiasm that Merry had shown about coming to the shire was gone, and he now sat staring listlessly at his horses mane as it clopped along.

Suddenly, Iris stopped.

"Look, a pub...." she said, rather unenthusiastically.

Most of the company continued, some not even hearing, they were all rather downheartened.

"Wait!!" said Zee, stopping also.... "Rea, what is a pub good for!!"

Now everyone stopped.

"Beer..." said Frodo.
"FOOD!!" said Pip.

Rea caught on to what Zee was talking about....

"No..." she said, rolling her eyes at the two Lads, "....Information!!!!"

"Er...not meaning anything by this, But perhaps just the Hobbits should go in here..." said Sam, "I dont like the looks we were given on the road, and, er, you see, we will blend in a little better."

And so it was that the hobbits ventured into the inn, while the rest of the company waited.....

Re: The Legend of The Company

The men and elves of the Company waited outside while the hobbits investigated the inn. They were receiving sideways glances from many of the hobbits standing around outside of the inn. The Company just kind of stood there at a loss for words, not understanding anything going on around them. One seldom found the Company so at a loss for words or information.
Suddenly, Luthien spoke up, "I have been thinking of what Marla said about the Dark Elves. I did not say anything when we were at the castle, but I can tell you where the Dark Elves came from. When Orome summoned the Elves to Valinor they did not all come. This was the First Sundering of the Elves. Those who stayed behind were called the Avari, the Unwilling, and they were never met again by anyone, but it was prophecied that they would come again in many ages past. Perhaps that time is now. I fear that this situation will require all of our intelligence, strength, wit, and creativity."

The Company isn't exactly encouraged by Luthien's words, but right now, they want to learn as much as they can.

Meanwhile, in the tavern...

Zee and Rea led the group of hobbits into the tavern. They went straight to the hobbit, who seemed to be the owner of the bar. They weren't sure what to ask, but Rea nudged Pippin to speak to the owner.

Re: The Legend of The Company

The pub was full of hobbits, although there was very little merriment, and no music....it seemed almost as a place of escape. All that could be heard was the murmur of voices, and the atmosphere of gloom was almost heavy, they felt burdened in this place, as if someone had placed something upon their shoulders and it was overwhelming them.

The hobbits approach the bartender....they were getting looks from many of the patrons, as they are dressed in a rather colourful, outlandish manner, and some were rather tall for hobbits.....perhaps even as tall as the famed Hobbits of legend, Thain Peregrin the Brave and Meriadoc the Magnificent.

Rea nudges Pippin. "You talk to him Pippy." she says, giving him a peck on the cheek.

Pippin smiles as she approaches the bar beside him.

"er, excuse me." Pippin says to the bartender. "Do you have the date, see, I was just writing a letter, and it just slipped my mind, I've been journeying for so long, I've just totally lost track of the days."

the bartender muttered a reply.

The hobbits all stood there, mouths agape.....

"2109......of the 4th age!!!" gasped Baz

"Why, that means that....(Iris' eyes widen)....we are 680 years into the future!!!" Iris whispered in awe.

"Oi!!" called the Bartender "Are you lot going to order or what???"

Rea approached the bar, with a sad look on her face.

The other Hobbits all tried very hard to supress their smiles and giggles.....

"Sir, we are returning from visiting relatives on the other side of the shire, and, well, we ventured a little too close to the shire boundaries, and....(her eyes tear up)....We were robbed!!! We have not a penny between us sir, We are weary from travelling so far and simply came in to rest our feet for a bit, before continuing our journey home....we were just writing a letter to our relatives to let them know what has happened and that we are alright, thank Eru"

The Bartenders face softened. "Why, me dear, that must have been awful for you!!!!" Rea nods, her lip trembling and a tear rolling down her face, for full dramatic effect "I tell you what, why dont I give you all a half-pint on the house, and you can rest your pretty little feet here for a bit.......gosh, we all know what hard times these are, and we all live in such fear of what is to come, least I can do is help out my fellow hobbits in need."

Pippin frowned as the Bartender took Rea's hand and patted it comfortingly as she dried her tears while thanking him profusely......but he couldnt help but smile and feel proud of her as he carried his pint over to a spare table.

"Okay everyone" said Zee "we have to listen carefully to the conversation around us now."

Azzie was interestedly watching an old man in the corner....he seemed alot more cheerful than the rest of the patrons of the tavern, she couldnt hear him from where she was, but she could swear she saw him giggle on occasion.

"Frodo, come with me..." she said, getting up and joining a group surrounding the old man.......he was telling a story, a story they didnt know, of long ago, About a Thain Faramir 1, Prince of Ithilien, married to a lass named Goldilocks.
but they caught only the end of it and as the crowd dispersed, Azzie and Frodo stayed.

"Why hello, young-uns" he said. "sorry you missed the story, twas a beauty too, about my own ancestors."

"I would love to hear it." Replied Azzie "Sir, Would you know of somewhere we could stay for the night.....us and our friends that is....." she asks, pointing to her table. "Oh, and we have other friends outside, would you know of somewhere that would take us....they....er....they arent hobbits"

The old man looks at her, suprised. "It was wise of you not to bring them in, these folks dont take kindly to strangers, although there was once a time when the Shire-folk were friend to all, now they are very suspicious of any stranger, and well they should be......I know of no place that would take your friends, but I have a large home, and it will fit you all, if you wish to stay."

Azzie's eyes brighten..."That would be wonderful!!! and you can tell us stories???"

"Yes Me dear, it is my favourite thing to do, although these folk are sick of my stories, it will be refreshing to have your group listen. (extends his hand) they call me Old Took."

Azzies eyes widened as she shook his hand. Frodo went to gather the other Hobbits, and they all met outside and followed the Old Took to his home.

posticon Re: The Legend of The Company

The hobbits emerged again from the tavern, and out on to the road where the rest of the Company awaited them. They had fallen into a gloomy silence, but one by one they noticed the elderly hobbit among their friends, and their eyes became astir with curiosity at the sight of the benevolent old fellow.

Frodo stepped forward and introduced the Old Took, and he smiled up at the tall figures looming in the ever darkening afternoon with good-natured ease. They all immediately loved him.

"I hear you're in need of some shelter and a bed for the night, my friends." He said in his cheery voice. "As I have said to these friendly young hobbits here there is more than enough room at my old place up at Tuckborough, and if the truth be known things are in need of some brightening up around here, so you are more than welcome there. More than welcome."

Everyone smiled with relief, and Asenath gratefully accepted the offer on behalf of them all, while Rea and Zee both bestowed an affectionate kiss on his wrinkly cheeks causing him to grin roguishly.

So it was settled that the wearisome Company would follow home the Old Took, and share the hospitality of the Great Smials, that place once so familiar to them all as the ancestral home of their very own Pippin. They rode on through Shire lanes and past ill-grown fields and once green pastures, now most of the landscape seemed a wilting, fading brown to their eyes. The Old Took shook his head often as he rode his plucky pony at the head of the party, his troubles pouring forth now he had found so many willing pairs of ears to listen.

As the first of the stars began to appear faint on the horizon, they rounded a corner and looked upon the enormous hill that had housed generation upon generation of Tooks for centuries untold. Pippin and Rea let out small sighs of gratitude that in the face of all the change that was evident, their family's mansion was still strongly rooted in the homeland. The horses were seen to and warnings whispered not to reveal identities that would only serve to confuse, and eager to get under a roof and in front of a fire, they all passed over the threshold (with many a bent head and one banged one).

They were warmly welcomed by all the hobbits who resided in the great place, and there were many as the tunnels were numerous and buried far and wide into the hill. The Old Took had worked hard to keep this part of the Shire as cheery as he could, and so as they walked along with him they were greeted by a few smiles, and heard quiet laughter echoing off in the distant rooms here and there.

Eventually, when they felt like they had walked so far that they would come right out onto the other side, the Old Took came to a halt outside a big round wooden door set back in a lonely corner of the house.

"This is a room only used by myself, as once done by one of my ancestors away back in the day. No one is permitted to change things round, and only I come here now. Please, follow me."

He took out a big key-ring from his jacket pocket and unlocked the door. Inside the room was darkness but as the candles were lighted the room of the Old Took was revealed. Beautiful old furniture was laid out with exquisite carvings and beautiful upholstery. The great fire was lit and the room came alive with warmth and shining glass. Merry stood at a dark wooden case by the wall and beckoned over Pippin. It was a copy of the Book of Westmarch, Bilbo's famous book. "They still have it here!" Pippin exclaimed in wonderment.

Presently a troupe of hobbits brought some refreshment and the whole party found themselves a comfy spot and the Old Took held court from a small armchair by the fire. He propped up his large hairy feet on a footstool, and puffing on a long pipe looked around at his guests.

"Well now," he began, "would you like to hear a tale? I have a wonderful one about two of my favourite kin. Their names were Areata and Pippin Took, and they performed great, fearsome deeds in days long past."

This kind of comes as an aside/after Luth's post to capture the mood..I'd already written it before Rea and Thea posted but couldn't get online to post but I'll post it anyway! Am heartily glad we are adventuring again though! emoticon

*****

The mood within The Company was blacker than any had ever feared it could be…everyone seemed to have lost the will to speak or if they could failed to find anything to say…anything that could make this nightmare fade…time seemed interminable with every second that passed…a friend no longer but an enemy...they none of them knew how long since they had seen home or a friendly face...time played tricks and perhaps worst of all….Time Changed.

It seemed Pippin in particular could not contain his shock and despair...his normally cheerful face grave as he spoke…his voice on the edge of tears…

..it's just gone...all of it..gone.

Merry laid an reassuring arm on that of his old friend…all he could think to do as he looked around the faces of The Company…all of them looking at one another with fearful eyes as they finally began to comprehend the scale of the facts that surrounded them. They were lost….with no way back.

All that they knew and loved was gone…their beloved Stonewain...their oldest and dearest friends…and a feeling within as if they could foresee it…

The Shire.

The only respite lay in the fact that they were together if nothing else…with only memories to sustain them. Hope lay broken…faith almost lost…

Would they ever find their way back home?

Zoomin' right along...

The Company was entranced by the venerable hobbit's tale. They immediately realized that the dear hobbit was speaking of their own Pip and Rea!

Re: The Legend of The Company

The Old Took spoke of many things in which the Company found delight in hearing. He spoke of Rea and Pip, and their hobbit kindred, and of the forming of the Company. He relayed many of their most fiercesome quests and mighty deeds of, to him long ago, though to the Company it was but almost yesterday it seemed. They marvelled that such knowledge was still kept alive after so many years had passed, the Old Took then informed them that it was only a few living hobbits that nowadays kept the tales alive.

"One poetic ballad was written of these mighty warriors!" he said. " The most famous, and enduring, that has stood the test of time and thrilled generations of young hobbits. No one dares to speak of it now, and it has fallen into neglect, yet I do not fear to speak it. I will recite it for you now."

He stood up, and pulled himself up to his full height and proudly recited the ballad as the flames cracked and hissed upon the hearth behind him. The Company listened, spell bound.
