New Baby Customs...

I was just wondering....

I realize it's probably a moot point this far into my history, but if you'll remember, at the beginning, Bilbo blessed wee Orangeblossom shortly after her birth....

Was this a common custom in Middle-Earth?

Just want to be sure I don't have something crossed here...
