Heath Ledger

...found dead at age 28 in his Manhattan apartment . Apparently he was found naked at the foot of his bed with sleeping pills nearby, but there is no indication this was necessarily a suicide. He had an appointment with his massage therapist, his housekeeper came in to his room to tell him the therapist was on the way, and she found Ledger dead.

The article indicates he was having trouble with anxiety and with sleep, had used Ambien but they didn't work well for him.

This is just so sad. A true talent, gone so young! emoticon

I know! I was shocked when I heard about it!

It's actually a little surreal. I was just talking to my mother the other day about the upcoming Batman movie. . .

I'm very careful with medications - a pain medication set off my seizure nightmare. emoticon I feel so bad for Ledger...

If you'd like, go see my rant in the Vent section about this bigoted religious group who plans to protest Ledger's funeral, and say he's in hell. It's so Christan to make a bad situation worse, people. emoticon

I'd like to know who prescribed those medications for him. Was it one physician or several? And what dosage?
Also, has "sudden death" been reported before as a side effect of these medications, even when used properly? If so, then maybe all these stars who died of "an apparent overdose of sleeping pills" were really the innocent victims of drugs with really bad safety profiles. Hmmm....

Re: Heath Ledger

Excellent questions, Delia!

All I know is, I've never really had trouble falling asleep, but when I do - or when I'd just like it to happen a little faster - I'd much rather get the help of a soothing English/Scot voice (emoticon) than dump chemicals into my body... And the benefit of my preferred method is that it teaches your mind to help itself (and your body), rather than making your body increasingly dependent on the help. And without side effects! (Or, rather, with only positive side effects, like decreased stress, better sleep, etc.)

(Granted, different things work for different people. This is just my opinion/experience and what I trust to work for me. I should note that I've gotten really picky about what I put in my body, especially if I can deal with the pain or whatever in another way. For example, it's been more than 8 months since I last had an ibuprofen, and I used to take them almost daily for back pain and/or headaches.)

Re: Heath Ledger

With some pretty severe chronic pain, I'm not spared the need for pain killers - though I'm on less than I was. I wish I didn't need them at all. but I've tried that with little success. Bodywork and chiropractic helps, though...

I hate putting chemicals into my body too; this is why I'm getting off neuroleptics for a seizure issue I don't have. I won't take sleeping medication; it's both bad with any type of seizure history (though it seems my seizures were drug-related, I have no disorder anyone can find!) and I'm uncomfortable with the concept in general.

I had a nightmare last night that some doctor was trying to give me general anesthesia and it wasn't going well; it didn't put me out right away. I was saying "I'm scared, I'm scared" and tried to get up. I woke up with a start, feeling drugged, and had to reassure myself that I wasn't actually drugged. How weird a dream is that??

It's interesting that you mention voice as a sleeping aid. I used to use books on tape or a tape of a really
boring lecture to fall asleep. Sometimes I also used the sound of a thunderstorm. But when all else fails I use herbs. Double or triple strength Chamomile tea always works for me. (Passionfruit, Valerian, and other herbs also work, but I haven't tried them.)

Don't these stars know about herbal medicine?

Yeah, I could see that working, too -- one of the reasons I was so desperate to see Branagh's Hamlet released on DVD is that I'd all but worn out the audio on the first tape of my VHS set from all the times I fell asleep to it. emoticon

However, check the link in my post - I was referring to a very specific form of vocal sleep aid: hypnosis for sleep. (For the record, I have three of the four sleep programs available at that link [along with several of their other programs], and they're all wonderfully successful. I highly recommend their programs. Both of the blokes who run the site are very talented. One of them, Mark Tyrrell, is the same Mark I've been emailing with for the last 7 months and whom F4E and I visited in Brighton in November.)

And Tamlin? As long as I'm on the topic: This link's for you. emoticon It's a thought.
