For the life and times of Edgar Wallace, check this out (better seen with Adobe Acrobat):

Re: What's your favorite League character author
Kobe: thanks for the link. I have heard of Wallace, of course and have read 'The Four Just Men' and some short stories, but I had no idea he was so prolific.
I will have to check out some more.
Just finished reading 'Bulldog Drummond Returns' by Sapper and found it pretty dull, though quite an unusual character for the time. If played for camp, would come across pretty outrageously gay today.
Still interesting plot and good devices even if the social context seems very distant now.

Re: What's your favorite League character author
H.G. Wells, no question. Wrote some utterly brilliant sci-fi, that guy.
Stevenson comes a close second, simply for the marvel that is The Strange Case Of Doctor Jekyll And Mr Hyde.
Admittedly, I've never got too far with Jules Verne and H. Rider Haggard. I'm not sure why, I usually read anything that I can understand. Oh well, practice makes perfect, I guess.
Adrienne.

Sax Rohmer
(Yeah, again).
I'm not stopping until at least someONE starts reading him.
(Wells, and Verne and Stoker and Conan Doyle already seem to have enough followers)

I've read one of his books. Does that count?

Someone who wrote a play ("on the spot") with Charles Laughton in mind for the leading part, therefore, treat him with respect... or else.

Re: What's your favorite League character author
Here's a little quote I came across recently from the Grandfather of speculative fiction H.G.Wells.
"My imagination refuses to see any sort of submarine doing anything but suffocating its crew."

Re: What's your favorite League character author
I vote for HG Wells, with HR Haggard a very close second. Wells is still, after all is said and done, the author I return to the most...in fact, I just finished reading THE WAR IN THE AIR, and a ripping yarn it is!
I'm not for a moment surprised by Jules Verne's poor showing in this little poll. Most of his work, over the years, has been in piss-poor translation from the French..or so I've been told. I don't read or speak French, but my father did, and he had nothing but contempt for most translations of Verne.
