That's a very badly thought out article. emoticon The mini-synopsis of the film rather spoils a crucial plot twist, does it not..? Grief...

As to the substance of the case, I've added most of my comments elsewhere (DCB and Y!), but since this is the better Forum for discussion...

It would appear that Fox is about to get sued over it's ADAPTATION of the comic?! There seems to be no hint of any lawsuit against Misters Moore and O'Neill - only the treatment. For why..? Well, it would appear that some of the 'changes' made by Fox - Dorian Gray, Tom Sawyer, a 'Phantom' are alleged to have been lifted from a prior idea, that, not unlike other Wold Newtonian tomes and, to stretch an analogy, Mythstalkers and Searchers, bore some coincidental similarities. The Fictional Character team-up cannot be quibbled over - anyone can write what they like with public domain characters, after all - but it would appear that a proposal for an earlier film 'Cast of Characters' features characters TOO similar to the ultimate 'LXG' film.

In other words (by my reckoning), if Fox had adapted the story from the comics: Marvellous! Much praise all round... however, since they changed it (allegedly) with additions from somebody else's idea, they now face a lawsuit.

Grief..

After reading the posts on the DC board about this subject it certainly explains why the movie bears so little resemblance to the comic.

By the way Ntnon did you get my PM last week .With losing this past weeks E-mails I don't know if you sent me a reply or not.

It certainly sounds as though it will be a mess. Poor Alan Moore who wanted nothing to do with the film will be dragged in on the periphery.
Unfortunately, it sounds all too plausible that the studio would 'merge' scripts in this manner, making the assumption that by formally announcing the adaptation of a comic book about some characters who are in the public domain, it could do anything it wanted with any other characters who are in the public domain...even if they were aware that other authors were going down the same path.
This will be an interesting court case since there are undoubtedly MANY people playing, as we have played on these boards, with the idea of putting previously diverse contemporary fictional characters into the same storyline.
The technique is ancient...even by Hollywood standards.

Like what tb sivana said about merging scripts into one idea. Hollywood has done this before with the second and third Die Hard films. Both of those were in the begining two seperate films that were then changed so they could be die hard 2 and die hard 3.

but the thing about that and this case is that they had permission to chage things. it seems here all they did was change the name and like a chacter or two.

then again i see this case being thrown out after awhile

Yes. emoticon And that'll be why you didn't get my reply, then... I randomly guessed it was my webmail playing up - again emoticon emoticon - and indeed, maybe it was, but.. well.. Quite.

Shall I give it another bash at replying when my webmail comes back to life, then?! emoticon

I don't agree! Remember his quote, about 'The Big Sleep'..?

Well. The comics are fine. He's got - and, I imagine will keep - his money from the rights, so.. he'll be laughing!

He's repeatedly said that he doesn't understand a lot of adaptations - it works as comics, why not let it..? So... I think he'll be allowed to keep his distance, will do so, and just be having a jolly good laugh!

(Like I, possibly inaccurately, suggest - if they'd made what he wrote, they'd not be in this mess! emoticon)
