Harry Lime

Like the first two volumesThe Black Dossier has encouraged me to go out and watch\read the source material for many of the characters who appear in the League.

I'm afraid to admit that I'd never seen The Third Man so I just bought a copy. Now I am really confused. Harry Lime is an American, who apparantly went to school with Holly Martins in the USA. Martins claims to have known him for over twenty years. So how come in the Dossier we are told he is in fact Bob Cherry, an English public school boy?

Re: Harry Lime

Presumably Moore is going with the novella rather than the movie:

Adaptation of the source material

I suppose that it is also worth mentioning that after the British spy, Kim Philby, defected in 1963, he was referred to as "the third man", following the earlier defections of Burgess and Maclean. In the early 1940s Philby had been Graham Greene's boss at the Secret Intelligence Service and almost certainly served as the model for Harry Lime.

In fact in an interview Alan Moore mentions this and adds "And then... Philby was named after Rudyard Kipling's Kim. Kipling lived in Broadstairs which is where John Buchan wrote The 39 Steps, near the real 39 steps down to the beach. So it all ties together. There's something about it all that's more than coincidence. It drives you mad after a while"
