Actually, that's a very good point.

If I remember correctly from the book (not that the movie NEEDS to follow the precise sequence, of course), Gandalf and Saruman exchange some words. Gandalf on his horse outside the tower, Saruman in a balcony in the tower (or something like that) . Then Gandalf "breaks" Saruman's staff long-distance, THEN Grima throws down the Palantir.

What happens first in the movie? (Oh well, ANOTHER reason to see it again). Pippin seeing the glittering Palantir under the water, or the line Gandalf says to Aragorn about Saruman having lost all his powers? Because if Pippin sees the Palantir AFTER Gandalf's line then it's very easy to see what scenes (and where) will be included in the DVD.

(Or maybe instead of seeing the movie again I should just reread the books again. I've been meaning to since the first movie came out, but nothing has come out of it yet. It's been now over twelve years, and counting, since I last read them) emoticon

I can certainly see why the Scouring of the Shire was omitted. But I was under the impression that Christopher Lee had a big death scene. And nobody "dies" on screen quite as well as Christopher Lee.

And on the subject of The Return of the King.Apparently an Historian as tracked down the descended of Richard the Third(Plantagenet)in Australia,he's a folk lift truck driver and he could have a claim on the English throne. As it could be argued the Henry the Fourth took the crown illegally.

I............ think that it's the scene after Pippin has had a peer into the Palantir, just after Gandalf has said 'Yeah, never mind, he didn't say Frodo had the ring, so...'

...Possibly, anyway. emoticon

Here is my opinion on Lord of the Rings. Like everyone else, I think that the omission of Saruman was a serious mistake that isn't justified. Yeah, sure, one could say that it would take too long, but there was a solution for that. Jackson could have cut out those first Smeagol/Deagol scenes. They were unnecessary, and I personally felt grossed out by the sight of Gollum biting into a fish. The flashbacks could have been cut out as well (what I mean are those scenes which show footage from the previous movies, e.g. Boromir's death, when Pippin is in audience with Denethor). But all in all, it was a good movie.

I agree it didn't seem as long to me. The rest of the nincampoops in the theater with me, however, were already fidgeting and starting to whisper by the time Aragorn went into the mountain (which, by my calculations, was somewhere around the middle).

The annoying presence of nincampoops while your watching a movie seems to be universal. I had to put up with the innapropriate giggles of God knows how many teenagers. They laughed for no reason, and for every reason, if that's conceivable.

Finally saw it yesterday.I think it didn't need the Smeagol flashback and this could have/should have been supplemented by the Sauraman sequence, but apart from that small "niggle" I throughly enjoyed it.Without a doubt the film of the year.
It has certainly set new standards as far as the battle scenes are concerned, and I certainly cannot see how next years Troy and Alexander the Great will top them. And apart from the battles it really does portray how friendship can whether adversity.Obviously Tolkien must have drew on his experiences during the First World War for these aspects.
I would say the film passes the "lump in the throat"test, but then again perhaps thats just me been a soft old sod.
Oh and finally what happened to the Mouth of Sauron?

Actually, I'm afraid I have to disagree. I liked the Smeagol-Deagol flashback. In fact, I've been surprised for the past two years THAT scene hadn't been included in either of the first two films (the way it was included, for instance, in the Ralph Bakshi animated version from 1978 ) as it IS a rather important piece of the story.
I wasn't grossed out by the scene of him eating the raw fish and in any case that's no reason to delete a scene.
They should simply add the Saruman scene (what is it, maybe all of FIVE minutes? ), and leave the rest alone.

The worst scene without a doubt though, has to be the cringe inducing moment when Aragorn sings during his coronation.

I swear to god I'm not trying to pick a fight, SP, but I have to disagree again (well, after so many times we shared an opinion this was only bound to happen, I guess).
See, I actually like the five-ten seconds of Aragorn's song (though, admittedly, most people I know either agree with you or simply didn't care enough to utter an opinion to me).
I guess part of me (the highly impractical part) wishes SOME of the songs in the books had actually made it to the screen. I loved the scene with Peregrin singing his little song while Faramir charges to his doom.
This would be a good time to mention I've just seen it again (my second time) and lots of things that sort of tested my patience worked a lot better with me this time. It REALLY goes a hell of a lot quicker for instance.

I certainly agree it was a very good counterpoint between Peregrins song and Faramirs "forlorn hope".And as I said apart from a couple of "niggles" it is without a doubt the best film of the years, nothing else even comes near.
