Dr. Who 40th anniversay.
November 23 is fast approaching.
Any Who fans around?
Even better still, any Who NOVELS/CDs fans? The TV show will always have a place in my heart (the Baker stories were my first introduction to the character), but for my money some of those novels from the 90s, whether from Virgin or the BBC itself, whether the current Doctor, or one of his past incarnations, were a wonder beyond and above the TV series (well, SOME of them, anyways) .
Ditto for the radio shows on CD.
I just read the cable channel UK Gold will be broadcasting an entire weekend of Who-related material

Re: Dr. Who 40th anniversay.
I like Dr. Who, but more specifically the Tom Baker Dr. Who. It's the one I remember watching it on PBS in the States (all you people probably don't know what PBS is). I heard that they're going to make a new series, Is it true?

Re: Dr. Who 40th anniversay.
I'm assuming you're NOT including me in that "you people".
I do know what PBS is. I used to watch a TON of Dr. Who episodes on PBS during the early 80s (single episodes on weekdays, and complete "movies" --the four episodes bunched together-- on sunday mornings) .
Like I said, I also started with Tom Baker (during the 70s I used to watch dubbed episodes every week), but the ones with the somewhat sinister and manipulative Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) eventually became my favorites.
Yes, there IS a new TV series on its way (our friends from Britain could possibly be of more help here).

Re: Dr. Who 40th anniversary.
No real news as far as the new series of Dr Who at the moment. It's been officially announced and I believe is targeted towards 2005 as a starting date for a new series. As far as Dr Who is concerned my favored is John Pertwee followed by the earlier Tom Baker seasons. What really killed it of for me was when John Nathan Turner took over as producer. The story lines and production values really went downhill from that moment on.That been said though there were one or two good stories that the latter Doctors had.As far as the DVDs are concerned I'm getting the Pertwee disks, the classic era Tom Baker plus any Dalek releases.

Re: Dr. Who 40th anniversay.
You might answer a question I've had for some time, SP.
Regarding the Who DVDs, do they include the opening and end credits for EVERY episode? (There are usually four or six in each story).
I'm asking because I've seen some of the VHS releases and they "bunch" the four (or six) episodes into a "single" movie, thus cutting the opening and end credits of all the in-between episodes. This might be a meaningless complaint, but one of the things I liked of Who as a child was precisely the cliffhanger at the end immediately followed by the end music.
And BTW, the producer of the new Who series is Russell T. Davies, the bloke responsible for the Queer as Folk series (the UK version, I mean), which I guess it's not surprising, since that series (trust me) was full of Dr. Who references.

Re: Dr. Who 40th anniversay.
I just need to ask this question, but if I told you that I would like to see the next Doctor as Malcolm MacDowell wearing a white gangster suit (with black gloves), would anyone here think I'm weird?

Re: Dr. Who 40th anniversay.
A white double-breasted suit with white gloves would actually be considered as conservative clothing by the Doctor.

Re: Dr. Who 40th anniversary.
The DVD releases are far superior to the VHS ones. You get the complete episodes + titles and a whole lot of extras, generally to many to mention here.If you go to the Outpost Gallifrey website, that should point you towards what the contents of the DVD releases are.As I'm not too sure if there are many differences between the region 2 and region 1 disks.
And regards Russel T.Davis Back in the 90's he did actually write two very good Children's dramas (in the UK) one called century Falls and the other The Dark Season. These were about the last two intelligent children's dramas written before the TV channels over here stopped making them altogether. And on the strength of them alone I'll approach the new series with a open mind.

But what about Malcolm MacDowell?

Re: Dr. Who 40th anniversay.
I'm afraid I've never seen an episode of Century Falls or The Dark Season. I have seen The Second Coming.
I'll probably approach the new Who TV series with some hesitation (whoever is producing it), but I'll certainly watch in hope.
THXS for the Outpost Gallifrey tip, SP. I'm well acquainted with the website. In anticipation of the 40th anniversary I've been buying some CDs to fill the holes in my Who Audio Play collection. I think I already have the best of the lot (ditto for the novels), but I'm looking around in case there's stil something left I might be interested in.
Cefo, regarding Malcolm McDowell, I too, would love to see him in Who (even if he doesn't play the Doctor). Methinks he would be well-suited to the Audio Plays. He has a great voice. You never know in what he'll show up next, he has a bizarre and eclectic taste. Sadly, it's not up to me.
