No real news as far as the new series of Dr Who at the moment. It's been officially announced and I believe is targeted towards 2005 as a starting date for a new series.

All I've heard officially is that it's Mr 'QaF' Davies writing..

Here's more:

quote:

Tegleraph
Although Davies says he wants to "introduce the character to a modern audience", Lorraine Heggessey, the controller of BBC1, insisted yesterday that she did not expect a gay Doctor Who.

She stressed that Davies had been chosen primarily because he is an "absolute Doctor Who fanatic" who had asked to write a new series.

She said it was too early to say which of the doctor's most famous enemies, who include the Cybermen, the Master and the Sea Devils, would return, but insiders said it was unthinkable that the Daleks would not be trundling back into action.

The actor who will follow in the footsteps of such popular Dr Whos as Tom Baker, has not yet been considered, she said. Possible candidates include Richard E Grant, who is appearing in a BBC internet version of Doctor Who, Paul McGann, who starred in the 1996 version, and Alan Davies, who has been linked to the role in the past.

..Davies will work initially on just one six-part series.

...REG was one of the guests in the Comic Relief spoof, if I remember rightly,
...Alan Davies, reputedly 'previously linked'.. well, remember Mr Brosnan and 007..? emoticon

More:

quote:

[Paul McGann] suggests an 'Amazon with attitude' for the role in a new TV series... In his extraordinary travels around the universe, he has been through several incarnations. But Doctor Who, television's favourite Time Lord, has never returned as a woman...

The actors Alan Davies, Richard E Grant, James Nesbitt, Jonathan Pryce, Bill Nighy, Alan Cumming, Ian Richardson and McGann himself are believed to be the current favourites to front the series, which is expected to go on air in 2005.

[McGann]"I'd like to see somebody really scary, Amazonian, highly intelligent and gorgeous in the role: someone who could be a complete handful. Rachel Stirling [the actress daughter of Dame Diana Rigg] could do it because she's got great charisma. Dame Maggie Smith would be brilliant. I'd like to see the Doctor as diva, rather than being played by some dippy, wide-eyed girl."

He added: "For too long the Doctor has been played as a very heavy, melancholic man with Victorian gravitas. I'd also like to see a black actor, like Chjwetel Ejiofor [the British actor who starred in the 2002 film Dirty Pretty Things] take the role. The producers of the ninth series should cast their net slightly wider than the usual white male, but it'll probably end up going to James Nesbitt, the star of Cold Feet, because his stock is so high at the moment and he'll be a ratings winner."

Mr Davies is said to have professed a preference for Bill Nighy, the 52-year-old actor who recently appeared in the television series The Lost Prince, and State of Play... Clayton Hickman, the editor of the Doctor Who magazine, said he had spoken to Mr Davies, who had let slip Nighy's name.

Alan Davies, the star of the BBC series Jonathan Creek, is favourite to succeed Mr McGann with William Hill, the bookmakers, at 8-1. There are currently no women on the shortlist, although Sir Michael Caine has an outside chance at 66-1.

...Tom Baker suggested a couple more, but I forget who. emoticon

If anywhere'll know more, it's probably these:

A gay Doctor? a female Doctor? emoticon

No offense to homosexuals, but why change the formula?

To be honest if it does turn out to be Alan Davis I'll give it a miss as it will be just like his other series Johnathan Creek. Not that there was anything wrong with JC but he is not a versatile enough actor every thing he's in he acts just the same.

Like I said in one of my posts (last page, I guess), Russell T. Davies has done OTHER things besides Queer as Folk (UK), you know? SP mentioned a couple of children series, I mentioned The Second Coming. Surely, it's not his fault he's famous (around the world, at least) just for Queer as Folk.
Regarding the gay Doctor, well, for YEARS I was absolutely convinced Colin Baker was supposed to be a homosexual Doctor (he wasn't, of course). To be honest, the sexual content in ANY Dr. Who TV show was so insignificant (NONE, as far as I could tell), that frankly I'm not sure the Doctor was straight either. For all I know, Gallifreyans don't have sexual organs, at least not like humans. (Wasn't there a story where Time Lords came out of eggs? )
Now, a LADY Doctor, I'm sorry if I offend any traditionalists, but I find the idea quite interesting... (having said that, don't worry. Fat chance in hell it would occurr) .

Oh, quite. But that does seem to be what everyone refers to whenever they mention that he's going to be doing Dr Who.. emoticon

I've only really loved Tom Baker, he is so bizarre he couldn't be anything other than alien. Has anyone seen his 'appearance' on Dead Ringers, trying to get a dress for his Sea Devil girlfriend and buying a new Tardis from a furniture store. Absolutely hysterical, that guy's got him down to a tea.

REG would be good, the dirty coat and scarf suit him (see Withnail and I). How about Tim Curry or Richard O'Brian (with harmonica), Joss Ackland (if he's still around), David Warner, Giles Brandreth (sorry). I love Cefo's suggestion, don't know why but Peck's Mengele in Boys from Brazil springs to mind. Can Malcolm wear jack boots too? Never mind Dame Rigg's daughter, if it has to be a woman I think the Dame would do a damn good job herself.

I hope they don't mess with the formula too much to 'appeal' to a wider audience, there wouldn't be any point bringing it back. Sometimes it seems to me as if these people think that everyone who watched old shows originally have died, and they can wipe the slate clean and start again. If Davies is such a big fan I think we're safe on that account, although I guess he has been known for pushing boundaries with his work. As long as they don't get that Roberts chap back to play the Master, I'll be okay emoticon .

Oh and please make sure the sets wobble.

That was good, but the better one was the short 'series' on C4 with the chap who does Dead Ringers (name escaped), talking to the people he's impersonating..!

He chatted with Dale Winton, Sir Patrick Moore and Tom Baker..

Watching him play the Xylophone with PM and tell the above 'Nok Nok' joke - IN TOM BAKER'S VOICE... well! Absolutely superb! emoticon

..I also thought he suited to bizarre feel of Reeves and Mortimer's Randall & Hopkirk (deceased) quite nicely.. emoticon

Richard O'Brien, then Richard E Grant.. marvellous!

Actually, that's an interesting argument. As I've been brushing up on my Dr. Who novels in anticipation for the anniversary, I've noticed fandom widely divided in two opposite camps. Those that felt the novels opened up the series for things that budget restraints would've made impossible on the TV show, not just F/X wise but also regarding more mature themes (without forgetting Dr. Who was not necessarily the best forum for "mature" topics), and those who passionately felt the books should try to recreate the "feel" of those low-budget/BBC-censored/cheesy stories from the 60s and 70s. I can see this same argument (and believe me, it was passionately debated on both sides) rearing its head when the new TV shows begins.
To be fair, I can see BOTH points of the argument. While I loved the 7th incarnation of the Doctor in TV, the sinister manipulative SOB, and the Lawrence Miles novels (with Faction Paradox, the Celestis, and the Dead Doctor) I admit I still have a fondness for the 70s stories with Tom Baker and those bland novels involving the earlier incarnations).
Just as I loved Chaykin's version of The Shadow in the 80s, I readily admit I still preferred the ORIGINAL pulp-influenced/set in the 30s Shadow.

K9....have you got any jam?

I know this news will come a little late, but BBCi are showing a web series produced by Cosgrove 'Dangermouse' Hall Films. Richard E'get in the back of the van!'Grant is providing the voice for the DR, who's cartoon incarnation resembles the actor with a touch of the creepies about him. Website being: www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho.

Problem is...I think it started on the 13 of Nov emoticon

Reading more news on BBCi, Anthony'Giles'Head or Anthony 'Gold Blend' Head has been voted top Who in a poll on the site. Followed by Alan'cancel christmas'Rickman, Stephen'soupy twist'Fry, Alan'I stole Baker's hair'Davies and Ian'House whip'Richardson.

Tom 'but you have a lady's purse me lord' Baker wants Eddie'Lady's purse, shoes, jewellery etc etc'Izzard to take on the role. It is believed he will supply his own wardrobe emoticon
