Re: More Films
Here's a recommendation for anyone who bought the definitive book on a century of British Horror movies by Johnathon Rigby English Gothic. He has a companion volume coming out in June 2004 called American Gothic, which I presume is about the last century's worth of American Horror movies.Anyone who has not got the original volume but even has only a passing interest in horror movies should really get a hold of this book as it,as I say the definitive book on the subject of British films starting with the silents and coming up to the present day, well 2003 anyway.

Adapt a Thriller

Well at least the BBC have learned their lesson from last year (with the worst version of The Hound of the Baskervilles). And haven't done any adaptations of note in the "thriller" type vein this year.
...quite. My family watched 'The Young Visitors', but even Hugh Laurie couldn't tempt me to join them...

Blazing Straight to Hell

I'm I the only one totally Underwhelmed by the thought of Keanu Reeves playing Constantine in the upcoming movie?
Errrrr..... no.
Frankly the thought of an American (no offence..) playing one of the very few quintessentially ENGLISH comics characters on film is.. well, 'appalling' is a bit harsh, but....
I would now blather on about Timothy Hunter, americanisation of; glasses, loss of; Harry Potter, because of and 'Which came first?!'.. but.. well. I won't repeat myself. Bah.

And on saturday afternoons we have been treated to the diffinative Holmes in the Jeremy Brett,Holmes stories. In hindsight watching the Basil Rathbone Holmes stories, once one gets past the terrible Nigel Bruce Dr Watson. These stories really do work set in the 30's and 40's.And sitting down to watch after a few years of not really watching them one realises Rathbone very rarely wore the old Deerstalker hat.
How strange that in the minds of the general public Holmes is always associated with the Deerstalker when both Brett and Rathbone and indeed the original illustrations hardly ever show him wearing one.

Dear Stalker
I got asked by a Japanese friend about the purpose of the rear flap of the deerstalker- does anyone know?
I guessed it's to keep the rain of the back of your neck as you hunch over to fix the little buggers in your sights.
Alternatively, it could be just so it makes a nice symmetrical cloverleaf shape when fully untied and laid flat.
Watson- Holmes, I hope I'm not being presumptuous, but... there have been women in your life, haven't there?
Holmes- The answer is yes. You're being presumptuous.

Dunno, though I suspect it's a bit of both.Although when you think about it I'm surprised they haven't made a come back. They are a form of "proto baseball cap" and with the amount of people who wear baseball caps backward a modern version of the deerstalker wound allow people to wear a baseball cap with visors to the front and aft.
