Then there's always that D.V.D release of a movie that you have been after for absolutely years for.Still there is that scant consolation that most of the older film releases are a bit cheaper as they don't have as many extras on.
Well, for me every film in DVD (the ones released in Spain, that is) has got the best extra possible: the possibility of hearing the film in the original version (only a few films released in VHS are subtitled, the rest, sadly, is dubbed )... Though of course, other possible extras in DVD releases, such as scenes deleted in the cutting room, are very welcome... (my DVD dream is "This land is mine-Director's cut" )
Kobe, right now we are being rather well served in japanese films (Classic, anime, as well as some contemporary films by Kitano or Imamura), particularly Kurosawa, with about a dozen films released (Including the long version of "The seven samurai") and delightfully, also the -rarely seen here- films of the master Mikio Naruse. Check them if you want at www.filmax.com (the subtitles of the films are only in spanish, though)
(Back to topic, I hope that my local dealers get CBA #25 soon)

Actually on the D.V.D front we in the U.K often get "the short end of the stick" as many U.S releases of old movies have a lot more extras than the U.K versions.

Cor, I've just noticed I've been knighted (somebody should have said something to me, I'm sure I could've worn one of my good suits). And on a post talking not about the literary merits of LoEG but on the one where I talk about DVDs.
Anyway, SP, you didn't answer my question.

because I'm worth it.
Yeah answer him damn it!
The US do get alot more extras on their DVDs, there was this Criterion version of Brazil which had 3 discs of stuff, we only got 1, and my player isn't multi-regional. I'm sick of reading in magazines how region 1 editions are far superior.
And as for the must haves, I can't buy a DVD if there is a new improved edition out, I won't buy Batman yet 'cos there is a special edition coming out next year apparently, same with Blade Runner. I bought Alien and now the quadriology is coming with a fully restored Alien III, and I had to replace my X-Men and Manhunter discs 'cos they brought out new editions . At least with the Matrix they gave you the option to buy the new extras seperately.
Sunset Boulevard, Throne of Blood? Kobe you are one cultured individual. Nice choices .

Blackadder, MM&HMM, NtNON, etc. DVD Rant
quote: spsmith wrote:

..can I do my periodic rant now, can I? Please?!
RIGHT:
Blackadder. Made in England by English people, starring English people in England with English accents, and funded by the BBC, which stands for British Blah blah Corpus-habitus, and so on and so forth. Released over here as 'The Complete Blackadder', comprising the four series' and the Big Millennium Dome Special. Released in America with the Four Series', The MD Special, The Christmas Carol, the Cavalier Years short, interviews with Richard Curtis, a BlAdder Family Tree, and a load of other decent things... FOR ABOUT 10 CHEAPER!
..what is that about?!
Then... why are DVDs (which were created to supercede videos, which weren't transferable between countries NTSC and the other one, &c.) NOT Universal? Why have 'Regions' when the point was that they could eb played anywhere?! Because of Hollywood and people having to release films at different times... absurd!
Why is it that after nearly every pointless BBC Programme you get a bit at the end that says "If you've really, really, really enjoyed this programme, and are far too stupid to have remembered to video it for free, why not spend shedloads of money on a DVD of it?" Whereas.... all the really GREAT programmes haven't been released! EVER!!
Walking with Dinosaurs, Walking with Cavemen, Walking through Gardens with Alan Twitchmarsh, Walking down the road, slowly... all of these were on DVD the second they were broadcast, and yet:
Maid Marian and Her Merry Men [Tony Robinson, in the Top Twenty Greatest Children's TV Programmes ever, won Baftas, is great]
Not the Nine O'clock News [Rowan Atkinson, Pamela Stephenson, Chris Langham, Mel Smith, Griff Rhys Jones, Richard Curtis, Howard Goodall, Nigel Planer, Douglas Adams, John Lloyd... rated alongside MPFC as the greatest sketch shows in the history of the world]
...loads of other things, including Life of Brian, which has never (to my knowledge) had the out-takes and deleted scenes released, HIGNFY, etc., etc., etc. - WHERE ARE THEY? They don't exist. And yet we can buy 'Coupling' and 'Walking on and on' within seconds.
Oooh... it makes me seethe...

arrrrgh the horror, the horror!
I'm feelin ya dog.
I think I should kick it old school from now on or I'll get a reputation with the RSPCA.
What I meant was, I know what you mean.
Don't even get me started with Walking With You Know Who, everything sucks. I was unaware of that Blackadder travesty, my blood boils thick, my hands claw at the air as my back hunches into a Richard the Thirdesque stance, and my foamy spittle dried as two salty marks in the creased corners of my mouth, contorted with the stretched taughtness of a pained and bitter scowl. Thanks for sharing buddy

Thxs, batfink. You know me, I'm a man of wealth and taste.
(Would your opinion of me drop precipitously if I mention I also bought the Vampire Princess Miyu two DVD set (the OVAs, not the TV series), the Trigun boxed set (it really DOES become much, much darker by the halfway point), and Season 2 of Queer as Folk?)
Or that I'm watching Letterman as I type these words?
BTW, I'm not going to get an answer from SP, right?

Yeah... although, in a faintly eye-rolling, but mildly humourous Ha-ha! sort of way... it does therefore work out CHEAPER to order the American DECENT DVD set in, rather than giving the Beeb my business..
But... MM&HMM! Not! OGG! ..so many more..
