DVDs
I have heard that some R2 DVDs are beginning to get some extras that are not on the R1 versions. But the really annoying thing, which is totally beyond me is why when a film has come out on R1 with extras it is released about a year later by the same distributors on R2 with no extras and costing at the very least a third again for less material crazy .

"DVDs were invented so that every country could watch each others' "videos", which were different formats..."

Blackadder. Blackadder. Blackadder, Blackadder, Blackadder. Blackadder's like that. AND IT'S A [English!] BBC PROGRAMME!!! But American editions get extra bits. And a cheaper set. And a more complete set.

Re: CBA #25
Cheers, SP
Zoltan arrived just last week (Amazon U.K. takes only a couple of weeks to deliver anything to Mexico City, while Amazon.com, our effing next door neighbor takes up to FOUR to SIX weeks. You'd think I would've learned my lesson, but no...). Anyway, it arrived with, er, Shogun, the Richard Chamberlain miniseries from the 70s, which you can say a lot of things against, but I've ALWAYS loved it, particularly Jarre's music. I admit I've been knee-deep in middle-ages Japan so I hadn't watched Zoltan yet. However, seeing your question this morning I decided it was time.
It's actually PRETTY GOOD.
I just assumed it would be a campy little horror movie, more fun than anything else. Imagine my surprise when I was sort of spooked a couple of times. Man, that was one motherEFFING scary dog.
Anyway, The Thief of Baghdad (the Conrad Veidt 1940 version) also arrived in the same package so I'm off to the past again. Tomorrow, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre!

Re: CBA #25
Well I got the 2 Dr Phibes films and the Raven. As they were only £12 each and I'm now skint till pay day but never mind. There's another 2,Tales of Terror and The Fall of the House of Usher. So i'll make do with one each over the next fortnight.I do tend to buy as I see when it comes to high street shopping as,as is usually the case if you don't buy there and then, the following week the item you left for a week has sold out. .

Re: CBA #25
Hey, SP,
I know you're in the middle of buying ALL the Brit horror flicks ever made, but have you seen the recent Bogie releases?
I just saw the Special Two-Disc set of Treasure of Sierra Madre and you wouldn't believe all the extras it has (um, plus the great movie, of course). It even has vintage Warner Bros. cartoons from the period. The Two-Disc Casablanca set also has a couple of Warner Bros. cartoons.

Re: CBA #25
I like watching the old movies when they are on TV,but unfortunately I've got to draw the line somewhere.Space and money be a slight consideration.
By the way while you are here, what are your thoughts, coming from Mexico,on the old Santos movies?I've seen photos in books on old horror movies and read the odd article but never actually seen any.

Re: CBA #25
Well, the Santo movies (and the Blue Demon ones, while we're at it) are the kind of movies I'll MAYBE watch on TV, but not buy a DVD (yeah, right), or even a VHS tape of them.
The very earliest are better (the ones made in black and white, to make it short), but nothing to write about really.
I've heard the first one was received with great awe in Europe back in the 50s, when they all thought it was meant to be intentionally camp/kitsch. A real-life wrestler as superhero making critiques about (then) current society. Later, when they realized it was intended to be a straight action flick they, um, changed their minds.
I don't want to be negative, but maybe you should simply stare at the photos from old horror movie books. Trust me, the images they conjure up in your head will be better than the actual things.
