Re: Planetary #16 is here (at LONG last)
Thanks, ntnon, for the heads-up on the Planetary Appreciation site. I checked it out through your link and was just knocked out by the detail in the Summaries section. I can't wait to read them all and compare them to the source to see what I have caught and what I missed.
Also, after looking over the summaries on the crossovers, I will give the JLA/Batman one-shots a chance when the collection comes out in March.

Re: Planetary #16 is here (at LONG last)
John Cassaday is doing a new limited series for Humanoids. He's also set to become the New X-Men's new regular artist (yeah right, REAL regular).
I fear we may have another loong delay before Planetary is finished.

Re: Planetary #16 is here (at LONG last)
Yeah, I wouldn't be that worried either.
Cassaday IS doing a series for Humanoids (I am Legion), but I just saw over at Newsarama that DC will become the American distributor for all Humanoids books (this is GREAT news, BTW), so they're withholding all new releases until Summer/Fall 2004.
I'd also read that Lying in the Gutters column nton mentions. I'm not entirely sure I understand its meaning, but clearly Whedon and Cassaday are not up next in the immediate future.

Re: HUMANOIDS
Yeah, I read about the deal between DC and Humanoids. Hopefully that means we finally get to see the Incal stories Moebius did. (They were supposed to be issues 13-24, after the Janjetov issues, also by Jodorowsky)

Re: Planetary #16 is here (at LONG last)
Hmmm. You know, that's odd. Just the other day my little nephew was talking about the same thing.
You DO know the Moebius/Jodo stories were done BEFORE the Janjetov/Jodo stuff, right? In fact, waaay before.
In the States they know about the Incal thanks to the three graphic novels Marvel/Epic published in the late 80s.
These were taken from the six thin graphic albums from France in the late 70s/early 80s known collectively as L'Incal:
L'Incal Noir, L'Incal Lumière, Ce Qui Est en Bas, Ce Qui Est en Haut, La Cinquième Essence partie 1-2. (That is, literally, the Incal Black, The Incal Light, Those From Below, Those From Above, et al. )
THAT's the material you're going to see as issues 13-24 of Humanoids Incal series. (With different coloring, though) .
When the material became hugely popular in America thanks to the Epic GNs, Jodorowsky decided to do a long prequel story (Avant L'Incal, that is, Before the Incal). Moebius was busy doing something else so Janjetov stepped in. The Avant L'Incal was also made up of six albums (the number seems to have some obscure mystical importance to Jodorowsky) .
THAT's the material which composes the first twelve issues of Humanoids Incal series.
Originally I wasn't going to buy the comic books from Humanoids (I already owned the French albums), even though I wanted to support their efforts. That all changed when I saw the actual comics. See, the original European albums used a very cheesy, bubblegum color palette, like little kids' books. This was intentional, of course. Since the story is so dark (bordering on the depraved), Moebius thought it would be ironic to use these garish colors. Humnoids decided (wisely) that an entirely new generation of readers in America (who probably have never heard about the "Incal" ) might not get the joke, so instead they used modern coloring techniques to give the book a darker, more realistic feel. TRUST me, it's almost like reading an entirely different story.
(I also own the first of the albums from Spain --and here our sorely-missed friends like Clara Pandy and Cefo could be of more help, since I don't know if they ever completed the run-- titled "La Juventud de John DiFool", that is, John DiFool's Youth, and the colors were the same as the French editions) .
For that alone you should buy the Humanoids version (if you prefer the strictly uncut version you should stick to their TPBs, since in the comics they tend to clothe all those nude women)

Re: Planetary #16 is here (at LONG last)
One last thing (then I'll shut up).
A couple of years ago I had the real pleasure to meet Alejandro Jodorowsky, and he told me he'd managed to convince Moebius to do ANOTHER Incal story. This one a sequel, named, obviously, Après L'Incal (After the Incal) , which will consist of another six volumes (of course) .
The first one came out recently in France (Le Nouveau Reve).
Presumably, that would be reprinted in the US (some years down the road) as issues 25-36 of the Incal series by Humanoids.

Re: Planetary #16 is here (at LONG last)
I note today that the Planetary storyline is heating up at last. In the current issue, the return of a 'First Men In a Trip From The Earth to The Moon' capsule, (presumably powered by Cavorite even though shot from a cannon), brings our heroes into direct conflict with The Human Tor...with their enemies.
It's been a long wait, but I have high hopes. Now if only we can get on a decent schedule!

Re: Planetary #16 is here (at LONG last)
Oh? The past couple of issues have maintained the bimonthly schedule so far. (The one you mention with "The First Men on the Mooon" has been out for more than a month)
The following issue is still solicited on schedule with the bimonthly status.
With Cassady and Ellis doing so much other stuff I'm not sure how long this will last, but so far so good.
