Moore's Supreme

In anticipation of DC publishing their 100th Archive this summer (which most people believe will be Silver Age Superman), I had a sudden urge to reread Moore's Supreme stories.
Has anyone here read them? (They were recently reprinted in two TPBs by Checker, and the original issues can be easily obtained)
What a wonderful, wonderful series (and if Moore was somewhat responsible for the grim 'n gritty comics from the late 80s/early 90s, it could be said his Supreme, along with his earlier 1963 and Busiek's Astro City and Waid's Flash, were responsible for the return of the "fun, sense of wonder" in some of today's comic books)
Too bad there isn't a "Supreme Annotations" by Jess Nevins (or anyone else). Once upon a time I was certain there WAS one, but I can't seem to find it anywhere anymore. If any one series deserved a lengthy annotations section, this was it.

Kobe: yes, I have read and collected the Alan Moore Supreme series....I have an almost-complete set.
If you enjoyed this series, I recommend that you also read the 'Judgement Day' TPB that has finally been released. This was a meg-event for the whole Awesome line that more or less was to become the bible for continuity for the entire universe of this company. You can clearly see ideas that Moore is paying off in America's Best in this story arc.
Highly enjoyable and daring, but also somehow familiar and friendly with that 'comics sense of wonder' instead of the grim and ugly character of the earlier Supreme series which up until Moore took it on was one of the most distasteful, incoherent and boring comics in history.

Cheers, TB
When I got a notification on my mail somebody had posted a reply on this board I almost believed it was some sort of mistake.
I HAVE the Judgment Day mini (including the Sourcebook and the Aftermath), and I agree with you.
When I reread the Moore Supremes I read the Judgment mini in between issues 52A/52B and 53 (though technically, I believe it fits better between 53 and 54)
GREAT stuff, particularly the Aftermath issue (an homage to Gil Kane DRAWN by Gil Kane just before his untimely demise). Just as good as the Jack Kirby homage in Supreme: The Return #6 ( "New Jack City" )
It's sad we'll never get to see the Challengers of the... er, the New Men adventures Moore was going to do, or the ones for Spacehunter (or The Allies, or Glory). You're right, though. A lot of Promethea (and even Cobweb) can be seen on that Glory prologue in the Aftermath.
BTW, did you know Curt Swan was going to do a flashback in Supreme but sadly he also passed away before he could do it?
Too bad Liefeld (and his cronies) drew the miniseries. On too many panels they just do their usual hatchetwork (full page panels with nothing but empty backgrounds and tiny stick figures in one corner)
Just out of curiosity, what Supreme issues are you missing?

..all of them 'missing' here... ..thus far. emoticon I'm currently working on back-buying Mr Morisson's Animal Man and Doom Patrol (and trying to get a decent degree, stay solvent.. emoticon), and then I'll be hunting the snark. Supreme, I mean Supreme... emoticon

All right, THIS is more like it.
I always knew you had good taste, nton, and your Animal Man & Doom Patrol purchases confirm it. (Are you getting the Animal Man TPBs or the actual comic books? I prefer the comics, but perhaps it WOULD be cheaper and quicker to get the TPBs as Morrison's entire run is already collected)
Of course, this won't work with Doom Patrol due to the nice folks from Charles Atlas Inc. and their, um, issues about Flex Mentallo (another GREAT mini by Morrison if you ever have the time to track it down)

What's all this about Flex Mentallo?
Was there some sort of controversy about this character? I remember well and thoroughly enjoyed the weirdness of the Morrison 'Doom Patrol', which has to remain the most out-and-out strango series that actually RAN.
Crazy Jane, where are you now?

Well, in a nutshell, the Charles Atlas people got upset about Flex Mentallo (which admittedly, is a Morrison spoof of the character and his ads on the back of OLD comic books as you might remember)
When Morrison did the Flex mini, they sued Warner/DC. The whole thing got solved in an undisclosed agreement: Charles Atlas Inc. would drop the suit, if DC agreed NOT to reprint any of the comics with Flex Mentallo in them. That means you will NEVER see a TPB of the Flex miniseries OR any of the Doom Patrol issues with him.

Well, as it stands at the moment, I've read the first TPB (good old Libraries.. emoticon), but I managed to find the first.. 25 (I think) issues reasonably cheaply, so I'm out for the comics now... and wondering whether to stop at #26, or carry on until the (allegedly 'bitter') end..

Well, quite. emoticon And Miracleman was becoming a vanishing dream until a faint rekindled hope a few days back.. emoticon

Although, apparantly, some chap at MillarWorld has had a full read of the Legal Papers for this case (aside: the McFarlane Vs Gaiman case was interesting if tangential to read, the Lone Ranger's real name cropped up for no apparant reason. Intriguing...), and it would appear that the Flex Judge was one of these amazingly bright ones, who understands the 'Fair Use' and 'Parody' legal minefields, and then allegedly threw out the case. The legend suggests that Mr Atlas could contest this if Flex were collected (hence the feet dragging), and since Mr Morrison had defected to New-X-Men, DC weren't overly bothered anyway.

It is hoped that when Mr M returns for Seaguy et al, DC will reprint some Doom Patrol, and maybe even Flex (which has been listed for sale on Amazon for a while, despite strenous denials and querying).

Fingers crossed... Miracleman and Doom Patrol may return soon..! emoticon
