More and more people of today seem to be segragated into their groups in terms of what music they likes. This is all very well, but I had an experience today that made me really want to knock someones lights out.

I was testing some equipment for a party I am DJing at the office today (I'm borrowing the sound rig from my work) and there were a couple of other people in the warehouse of my department.

What testing involved was to get the gear all rigged up and to play it at a decently high volume to give the quipment a thorough workout. Meanwhile, I hear voices from the other side of the warehouse cursing everything I did and outright abusing my music choices.

Now far be it for me to criticise other peoples choices, that's down to them. But for someone to outright shout that the things I like, are complete ****. That's a bit harsh isn't it?

I wonder if there is a name for it. Musicism or something....

Musicism is a good one and i know exactly what you mean, saying that though there are now apparently so many different music genres and everyone supposedly fits into one, you can please everyone all the time.

For instance i love rock.....that doesnt mean i only like hardcore rock, but classic 80's rock, soft rock AND every other kind of rock. But i also like punk.....

So what genre do i fit into? The whole stereotype thing sucks big time but everyone has their predjudices. At the end of the day tell em to **** off!!!!!

Looks like im gonna have to figure out them smilies yet again huh emoticon

Break out the Whitesnake! lol

It's hard, there are so many kinds I know. A lot of kids that are trying to get into the scene these days get described as emo, yet all they want to do is listen to music. It's hard.. I'll admit, I've been guilty of it as well. But when I go to a gig and I feel like the oldie of the bunch, it's just there for the taking lol.

Have to say summat I just have to!

I love rock music, I'm an AC/DC, Kiss kinda guy. I grew up listening to Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Doors... and uh yup they were still alive at the time.

However, I also like Glenn Miller, a bit of Jazz, happy country, some of the new pop rock material totally rocks... dancie disco stuff, some of that's ok too... in short I will listen to anything and decide what I like from each genre rather than just say, I don't like country, I don't like punk... cos there are bits and bobs I do like.

This however is indicative of the problem with the whole World, we label everything, everyone, and seem to have no tollerance for individuality, if you don't fit in a prelabelled box then you are not normal, and they don't want to know you, or worse it will end up in persecution.

Thats way too heavy... I say, listen to a bit of everything cos there's good bits in it all... if we were all the same there would only be one type of music... shyte...

Just ignore the ones who don't get it and believe that they are the only ones to have discovered and listen to the only true music.... Now gimme some AC/DC up loud !!!!

I don't like jazz or swing or stuff like that but other than that I'm easy. If it's a good song then it's a good song, don't think it matters who it's by. at the mo I'm listening to loads of jack johnson, melissa etheridge and guns 'n' roses

I don't really see a lot of point in all the manufactured stuff other than to make money, which sucks. even if they end up popular and stuff the musics not the same without the feeling put into it by the writer because they feel that way, if you see what I mean? they might as well just read some stuff from a book.

Mmmmanufactured music... kinda bollox init. Jazz and Swing... hehe, I like some of that stuff, the good ole Rat Pack. You didn't buy Robbies Swing When You're Winning Then?

It's also true to a certain degree that people who sing the songs written by others may not have the same emotional attachment to the song, but I think a good performer can still do them justice.

Robbie, has he written anything? He's bloody good at what he does though isn't he, whether you like him or not. We mentioned Guns N Roses, check out their hits, mostly covers of other peoples work, but still stonking performances.

My favourite Thunder track, my favourite HIM track, covers. So it is possible for a good artist to take on board what was in the writers mind and do something with it. But yeah, mass produced pop is, well mass produced anything be it pop, dance, trance... anything... music... is not my idea of a good time.

Getting back to the original issue, whether we like it or not, we should still respect others in their choice of listening pleasure... even if they are wrong emoticon

I have no problems with the robbie williams of this world...he sings well and does wicked performances but hes an arrogant bastard (i met him n a club). I like Angels and thats about it. Dont care if other people like him lol... thats their perogative.

And im with TSD on the covers bit, you look at bands like the unsigneds, they perform rocking covers of songs that are great.

My issue is with proper manufactured ****...aka Pop Idol. Mmm coz Gareth Gates went far innit emoticon , thats just all about the money.

And music such as trance and heavy goth metal stuff, whatever....even most dance music is just noise to me lol
