Drinking habits
Not exactly off topic, but I'm sitting here at my desk with the MOAH (mother of all hangovers) and it has set my two remaining braincells thinking.
Of all the sideshow performers I've met, there have been many who don't drink at all. You may not think this is strange, but I'm from Scotland and it is pretty unusual not to enjoy a wee swally every now and then.
What drinking habits of those in the sideshow world have you observed? Am I just imagining the lack of drinkers.

I think like you sort of indicated, it varies. For some people, its a cultural thing, that they drink more than others. So where you find many types of people, and backgrounds, you'll find different levels of drinking. I dated a guy from Ireland for a while and he drank frequently, but he handled drinking in a far more responsible fashion than many people I've known who didn't drink as often. For him, it was something he grew up around, and it was considered very normal in Ireland for people to have a few drinks every day. This guy was in perfect health, one of the nicest and most well balanced people I ever knew.
I would say, the differences in drinking habits are more likely to stem from the "why" part. Someone who has 6 drinks a night because it's what they do in their family, and to unwind after a day of work is a lot different than someone who has 6 drinks a night because he/she is unhappy with their life and wants to forget. Does that make sense?
I think in sideshow, there is a certain amount of stress/ as well as socialization that goes on. Are you drinking because its a relief from the stresses of performing, or how your performing is percieved by the massess? Or are you drinking because after performing, you and your fellow performers want to kick back and relax and have fun?
I don't know alot of performers but I'd say, given the laws of averages, that it varies as much in sideshow as in any other profession. At Sideshow gathering last year, I personally didn't notice anyone who was so drunk they couldn't walk, of course, this was just in the common areas. What they did in the privacy of their hotel rooms, I can't say, nor do I care, as that's their private business.
Just my 2 cents...

True. It's very similar in southern European countries too. Drinking wine is as common as drinking water, especially at meal times.
Mind you, my wife's grandfather is Irish and he's an alcoholic...

Perfect sense. I think what got me thinking was my experience of those performing in different arts. Stand-up comedians, for example. I've been to loads of comedy clubs and have performed at several. Back stage, many of them were very drunk. I think it was perceived pressure for some, while others thought that they needed to drink to be funny.

I can't say either and it's probably not worth going there if you want to preserve your sanity

Re: Drinking habits
I won't perform intoxicated, but if the bar is still open when we get through I'll drink quite a bit.
I don't drink at home, and rarely anywhere else.

Re: Drinking habits
I like to imbibe as much as the next guy... maybe an inhale or two of certain organic materials. But immediately before a show, these are all no-no's! Not only is it unprofessional, but it keeps me from being sharp, alert and on script. Nothing is worse on stage than forgetting your lines (especially when you are the author as well as performer). Plus, at venues serving alcohol, I get all my drinks free AFTER the show... before hand nobody could give a ****. Afterwards, the bartenders are all like "Wow! That was impressive... here's one on the house!" Of course, I find as many bartenders as possible to try this one on.
Otherwise, eat drink and be merry

Re: Drinking habits
well, being from an Irish background(and being transported to the deep south) I happen to enjoy guinness( and Irish carbombs) before a show I'm sober as a judge, after the show I don't drink either cause my adrenaline and endorphines are running pretty fast anyway. heheeh but other days? well sure why not? do I get drunk? no.

I happen to be a BIG fan of drop-in drinks. The carbomb is my favorite. Ever try a Dr. Pepper? (not the soda)

Re: Drinking habits
don't think so. details please.
best part about the carbombs? is watching a dude who lets the cream curdle and still try to down it, heeheehee that just makes me giggle like a lil school girl. makes me sad for the alchohol abuse, but that's another story.

Re: Drinking habits
I've never seen anyone sit on a carbomb to see it curdle... that sounds really funny. The Dr. Pepper is similar to the carbomb where you take a light pale beer and drop a shot glass of amaretto (sometimes mixed with either gin or rum) into the glass of beer and slam it. Sometimes the liquor shot is mixed with 151 and lit on fire before slamming. I figured since most of you guys like to play with fire (who doesn't?) this would be an appealing drink. We'll have to slam some down after the gathering.
Cheers!

Re: Drinking habits
I drink socially. I never drink before or after a show. I don't want to overload my liver after fire eating/breathing. I am also a recent graduate of a bartending school.
My first drink when I became legal was the stronger version of the irish carbomb (151 and Guinness). I have never had the irish whiskey and Baileys version or a Dr. Pepper.
Speaking of curdleing has anyone been unfortunate enough to try a cement mixer?
