The order of the phoenix
Hi all
Just wondering how many of you bought the new Harry Potter book on the day it came out? Like the true book nerd I am I was at the bookshop on Saturday to get my copy. Anyone else?
On a side note, how far have you got with it, and what do you think so far?
Thanks
David

Re: The order of the phoenix
I am even more of nerd. I was at the local Barnes & Noble buying mine from 12:01 pm to about 2 AM. Read up to page 450 Saturday. Reading the rest tonight. Yes. I spent my Saturday night alone reading a children's book.
Go on...mock me if you all must...

Re: The order of the phoenix
As if you couldn't tell by the fact that I reached page 450 in one afternoon...it's good, by the way. Much darker from the start than the others. Much darker. Can't wait to finish it.
Of course then, the wait for the NEXT HP book will be on...

Re: The order of the phoenix
Actually Sherri I have still to be beaten for Potter nerdism. Not only did I too spend my saturady night alone reading a childrens book, but I also finished it. I guess you are not the one who will now be mocked
For my part I feel it is the weaker of the set so far, and not really as dark as the previous installment. My other concern was that it was over long, I honestly felt less happened in this book than in any of the others. Yet it was half again than the longest of them. Plus, unlike with the others, I was left feeling that I had not read a complete story. There really are a lot of scenes which just go on without actually going anywhere.
That said, I still enjoyed it. But if it had been the first Potter book I had read I don't think I would have looked up the rest of the installments. I didn't get that feeling with the others.
Cheers
David

Re: The order of the phoenix
I like it very much too. And I got my copy signed by J K Rowling too (she lives in Edinburgh)
Definately the darkest book so far, but they've been heading in that direction since no.3. Not quite finished it yet though, but I've brought it into the office today to finish

Re: The order of the phoenix
Just finished it. It maybe took a while to get there - and the basic plot is pretty predictable after 5 books - but it was still great. Roll on the last two. Hope it's not another 3 year wait!

Re: The order of the phoenix
I tend to agree with David here, that it does not have the flow of the others. There is little motivation in some scenes, where as previous books were nothing but motivated characters. I think it was rather obvious that she had some difficulties writing this book. My favorite thusfar I think is a toss up between The Prisoner of Azkaban and the Goblet of Fire, depending on how dark I feel.
Each time a new one comes out I re-read all of the others the week prior. But I have an 8 year old son to be my excuse! lol
