REALLY OT....I need to vent...
I guess this is mostly just to vent my annoyance....but also if you guys can think of some..."creative" ideas with how to deal with this woman...It'd make me feel better, methinks...
I am not a sideshow performer. I am just a big fan of the art. But sadly for me, I have to work in a cubicle infested office. My cubicle (PODs as we call em 'round here) is located directly across from the POD of the absolute most annoying human being on the face of the planet...
We are located in Boston. This woman comes in every morning at 8 , same time as me, and starts her day of making loud personal phone calls to relatives and friends in Tennesse. Then she proceeds to speak loudly, and in language that, while it doesn't offend me per se (I'm not easily offended), is really aggravating to have to listen to at work (she talks like a teenage hip hop fan).
And occasionally, she does say something that's offensive to me (she's partial to using hip hop slang and rather racist terms... which does annoy me and is offensive to a few of my friends who sometimes pass through the area).
Then, when she finally shuts up for 15 minutes, she starts blasting horribly whiny r&b music from her desk. I usually have a few cds at my desk to counter the horrible "music" (which often sounds like little more than tormented cats being lit ablaze and crying with a synthesizer in the background). I forgot my cd today. Maybe that's why it feels worse right now than it has in days.
It often gets to the point where I have to leave my desk, take all my reports and work and such, and go and sit at another desk I have access to in order to get stuff done and hear myself think.
My boss is fully aware of the issue. She, my boss, has spoken to this woman twice in the last month and it does no good. This woman loves the sound of her own voice and nothing, short of firing her, is going to stop her from yapping all day. I have asked to be moved. I have been told this is not a possibility. For financial reasons , quitting my job (which is usually very easy, pays well and is kind of fun)is not an option. And besides, I shouldn't be the one who has to leave.
I want to try and talk to my boss again and sort of elaborate to her on the offensive language this woman uses. But my boss knows me kind of well , and knows that that stuff (swearing and what not) doesn't bother me so shes going to know I'm just trying to elaborate to get this woman in trouble. I doubt anything will be done to resolve this matter via the powers that be at work.
My friends and I try to deal with her by coming up with silly games to play revolving around her ridiculously unprofessional and trashy way of talking. We have, like, her "really amusing hip hop phrase o' the day"...and we sometimes take bets to guess which celebrity she'll be gossiping about on a given day. Someone on my other message board suggested making up a bingo card, with all the usual stuff she yaps on about and see who fills it first.
Really though, all I want is for her to shut up...
But that looks like less and less a possibility each day...
Any suggestions as to how to deal with this...
(the more "creative" , the better).
Anyone have any similiar stories?
I wish I did have some performing talent, because then I swear I'd leave in an instant.

Re: REALLY OT....I need to vent...
A tough situation there Sheri.
Ideally, this would be something that is dealt with by a team leader, supervisor or manager. Of course, they're only going to be in a position to do something if they're aware of the problems this person is causing.
What you could do is a) speak to your boss again and explain how uncomfortable this person is making you and b) keep a diary of things said, actions done etc, that will back you up. I know, from what you've written, she does and says so many things that it would take up all of your day to note them down, but I suppose you just have to be selective.
Asking others who work near you to speak with the boss is also a good idea.
On the fun side, if you speak a foreign language, why not use that when speaking to her? Or look through Order of the Phoenix and choose an appropriate spell....
Seriously though, if you get nowhere with your boss and this person is still causing you grief, then get in touch with your union.

ps I'm recuiting an other copywriter for my agency, so if you fancy a job here, let me know. Commuting might be a problem though, as I don't think the T goes that far

Come to think of it, I speak a bit if Romani and I think next time she starts gabbing about how attractive some rapper named Tyrese's lower abdominal area is (in not so classy of terms) I might just join in Romani and watch the hilarity ensue.
As for the spells...strangely enough, the other message board I post to is a Dungeons and Dragons/role playing game board, and the suggestions given to me by those folks all involved casting all manner of horrid D&D spells on her (such as permanent silence spells, turning her into various other lifeforms, and so on). Some even went so far as to create a set of stats for her, as if she were a monster a player would be fighting in a battle to see how many points you'd need to take her down...
If nothing else, talking about it helps cheer me up.
Oh my...the horrid music is starting already...I think she has the same song on repeat all day. I have eclectic tastes in music but the one form I can't stomach is whiny , r&b love songs.
:shudder:
Thanks for the advice

Re: REALLY OT....I need to vent...
You know what's strange about that suggestion...I actually HAVE a cd of bagpipe music at my desk...
I also have some Martin Denny and the soundtrack to Lilo and Stitch. Since my choices are pretty limited, I think it's time to hit rap girl with a good, loud dosage of Elvis...
Bwahahahahahahahahhahaahahahahhahaa
is that too evil?

Now that is nasty. But you could really freak her out by dancing along to the Elvis music (not that you dancing would be freaky, but you know what I mean - I hope ). And everytime she speaks to you go "uh-huh".
Or...
...buy her a cheeseburger every lunch break.
...tell her that you only want to be known as the King.
...tell her she ain't nothin' but a hound dog.

Re: REALLY OT....I need to vent...
I kid you not, as we , uh, type...
I have the gawd awful Wynonna Judd version of I'm a hunk of burning love blasting. A few people have walked by and told me I'm a freak. I just winked at them.
Oh...the things I'm forced to do. It's amusing me to no end though...
I think people look at me and they don't expect me to have the personality I have. Weird.
heeheee...Suspicious Minds is coming up next...
Oh man...I am evil...
